I was inspired to start this post by your incredible reception pictures (especially those CL's!!!!!!!!). Your posts are always so thoughtful and insightful.

So without further ado, please share who you are!!!!!!

Wow, princessplease, I am so incredibly flattered that you would want to know more about me. Anything in particular you want to know?

As for the basics, I am an only child. My dad died suddenly when I was 6, so I lived with just my mom until I was 18. Her and I are pretty close, as a result. I had a pretty normal childhood, other than this. Grew up in the suburbs as an anal overachiever, went to a state university and graduated the week of my 21st birthday, worked for a bit and was incredibly dissatisfied with the "real world" so I went back for a second undergrad, fell in love with sociology and have been in school since. I started dating my DH after I graduated with my first BA, we had previously known each other, but we lost touch because he was not living in the States. We quickly went from friends to more-than-friends and dated 10 years before we got engaged. As you know, we just got married

Right now, I am a grad student--about to get my PhD in sociology. This is why I have been hit or miss on PS lately. I am on the job market right now, trying to get a job as an assistant professor and have been working like crazy assembling dossiers for the 70 or so applications I am submitting. My DH is also a graduate student, though he doing research work with a private sector company and has been really thinking about doing that instead of being a professor.

Yay, kat, I''m glad you saw the thread!!!!

First of all, a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on the wedding! I ADORED your pics, and I

How did you get into sociology? What was your undergrad in? I was a psych major in undergrad, and am in my 2nd year of my M.A. in criminal justice, so I have a huge interest in soc/psych/anthropology/CJ. What are you working on for your research (if you''re researching)? What are your interests in sociology?

What is DH in school for?

Do you guys have any pets?

What do you do for fun?

What was your favorite memory from the wedding?

Thank you! Thank you! Me, too. As soon as I got my dress at the running of the brides, I decided I would spend the rest of my dress budget on shoes. I cannot wait until summer so I can wear them again.

How cool! I love that you are a social scientist, too! Do you have to write a thesis? What happens after you graduate (in your dream scenario)?

I got into sociology from reading. I rarely read fiction for fun, mostly nonfiction. There was a period of time where every book I really enjoyed was by a sociologist. If I had to pick a definitive book, it was probably Inequality by Design. I remember reading The Bell Curve for a class and thinking it was terrible science and an incredibly flawed argument. My prof suggested I get Inequality by Design and it just clicked for me. I just remember thinking that my "what-should-you-do-with-your-life" tests we took in high school always said I should be a college prof, I hated my current job, and so I quit to re-enroll in school to get a Soc. degree. At the time, I decided it would be best to get a second BA, because I didn't think I could get into grad school without a BA or BS in the field. I could have, and sometimes wish I would have just gone right to grad school, but I really enjoyed getting my soc degree.

I research the relationship between consumption and social class inequality. Right now I am really focused on debt because my dissertation is on debt and so is the project I am working on as a research assistant. I love all things strat, though. I honestly wish we didn't have to be so focused or I would be researching all over the map. Once I get a job (which, in this market should probably read, if I get a job), I hope to move into other institutions beyond just the economy. I love work that looks at how strat manifests in CJ, education, labor, . . .

What is DH in school for?

He is going for a PhD in computer science. He also works with the math department (because the two departments work together so much on what he does) and is eligible to get a PhD from math, instead. I think he is going to go with CS, though, because there are so many more opportunities with it in the private sector.

We don't, but I do.

I always joke with him that if we ever split, they come with me. They are 8 years old and from the same litter. I'll post pics!

What do you do for fun?

I really love what I do, so I read a lot of sociology outside of my area, if that counts. I also read a ton of blogs (I do this instead of fiction, I guess), and I am on PS. This is the first and only forum I post on, though.

My true leisure activity is gaming. I love competition and especially winning, so that manifests in a love of games. I play some console games (Wii is my favorite platform), but I love tabletop games--card or board more. Especially in grad school, I don't have the time to play video games as much as I would like, but DH and I have a couple of friends we invite over for board games once or twice a month, and that feeds the proverbial monkey.

I also like to listen to music. And, I like to watch TV (and am not ashamed to admit it).

What was your favorite memory from the wedding?

This is a toughie. But, I think my absolute favorite memory of the wedding would be a quick exchange we had during the ceremony. Our officiant was having me read all the passages about women being subservient to the man (i.e. all the things most women ask not be read) and the officiant goes over to ask our parents to bless the rings. DH leaned over to me while he was away, made a quick joke and then said, "Don't worry, though. When you say subservient, I hear equal partnership." It represented everything I love about him--a quick-witted sense of humor and being deeply caring all at the same time.

Here''s Kirby. Right now, he is only about 80% as cute because he is growing out his lion cut that he got this summer.

kat.kirby.jpg

And here''s Link. Stephen Colbert did this when he was looking for a black friend (if you watch his show, you might remember this). He wanted you to submit photos of viewers with him to see how they would look on fb. Anyways, we paused it and took one with Link.

ETA: They are named after Nintendo characters--further attesting to my love of gaming.

I''m searching for a pair of CL''s similar to yours in an aqua blue satin to wear for the wedding, but so far, no luck
39.gif

I don''t have to write a thesis for my MA. We actually have the option to work on a long term project with a prof, or taking comps when we are done. I had something lined up with the prof I worked with in undergrad, but she backed out, so I''m stuck taking the comps
32.gif
. Our department only has 4 profs, so if you''re not into what they''re researching, then you''re best to take the comps. I didn''t want to be forced to research something that I wasn''t interested in.
After I graduate, I will probably take a year off to just relax and not worry about school, and then go back for either a PhD or a PsyD in forensic psych. The programs avaialble are so few and far between, so it would require then DH and I to move. I figure a year is a good amount of time to buy a house in the school''s area (hopefully Nova Southeastern in Miami

) and for then DH to find a job in the area.

Your thesis sounds SO cool. I''m currently in a public budgeting and finance class, and I really find it very interesing. It''s my first foray into economics and finances, so I am learning a ton. How much time do you have left in school? With your dissertation? What is your dream job after you graduate?

What are your favorite Wii games? FI and I are getting one for Christmas from his mom, and I am beyond excited! I always play it when I visit my dad. I love bowling and baseball. We currently have an Xbox, and I love playing guitar hero (although I play on easy, so I don''t know if that counts lol!). I only play about 1x/month because of school, but when I find time, I LOVE it!

What kind of board games do you play?

I think it''s SO sweet what DH said to you during the ceremony.

Do you guys like to travel? If so, where?

What kind of music do you like? What are your favorite TV shows?

hi ladies, sorry to invade your conversation. I''m not a social scientist, but just wanted to say

katamari - Kirby and Link are so cute!

princessplease - I also love guitar hero, but we play it on PS3. DH does the guitar and I do the drums (all on easy). we call ourselves "BAND".

What?! I thought you already had a pair of gorgeous Martinez Valeros. Are you just thinking about going another route? I found mine on Bluefly, luckily, so I got them at a bit of a discount. I love yours, though. I am a big fan of shoes that have the same design aesthetic as the dress, which is why I had to have a bow on mine. And with yours, I love the applique and beading on the dress with the delicate detailing on the shoes. But, I also would enable anyone to buy shoes, so . . .

I took comps last year, and, trust me, it is certainly
32.gif
. I am very lucky to be in a huge program, so there are plenty profs to work with. I also got got excited about debt the same time one of my advisors did, so it worked out.

I just did a ton of research on the PsyD program because one of my former students is applying to them. I had not heard of it before and it sounds really, really interesting. I always envy people who actually do applied work and actually get to practice versus just researching, so I think it would be very neat. I also totally understand wanting some time off. I took my time off between undergrad and, well, second undergrad and it was much needed! Living in Miami sounds awesome, too! And, if your FI is excited for the move all the better.

I am actually finishing and applying for academic positions as we speak. My dissertation is probably 2/3 drafted, but it will take the rest of the school year to edit to the point that it pleases my advisors. I will, though, get my PhD this year, which is pretty cool. I am also trying to get a job, since I am finishing. I applied to about 70 jobs so far--all to be an assistant professor. The market is really tight right now, so I will be happy to get anything. I am very, very lucky to have an interview mid-month at a school I really, really would love to work at in the Pacific Northwest so I have been working on my interview materials almost every waking minute since I found out about the interview.

Easy totally counts! DH and I always play on easy first to open all the songs and then go back. I also love xbox. I love the games that I don''t have to spend too much time on now, so Guitar Hero, MarioKart, MarioParty, etc. I also just got DJ Hero. I haven''t played it yet, but it was my reward to myself for getting an interview. I will probably break into it after my interview, because school does totally suck into my leisure time, too.

What kind of board games do you play?

My favorite is Ticket to Ride, which is a strategy board game (kinda like Risk, but way less involved). I also play a lot of Fluxx (a card game), Wasabi, and Apples to Apples. We also play traditional games like Scattergories, Cranium, Trivial Pursuit, etc.

Columbus hosts a gaming convention every year, Origins, and DH and I go and buy all the nominees for game of the year. That is why we play a lot of the less traditional games.

Do you guys like to travel? If so, where?

Yes, yes we do. It is totally our passion. We try to go somewhere in the States every two years and out of the country every alternating two years. So far, we have traveled together some really cool places, my favorites being the Netherlands, Belgium, Venice, Richmond VA, Austin TX, Vancouver, and Ecuador. DH lived abroad when he was younger (in the Netherlands and in Sydney, Australia) so he is all about traveling and we have been blessed with parents who give us frequent flyer tickets every two years as Christmas presents (these are what we use to go abroad with). I think our next trip will be to the Caribbean since in all our travels, we have never actually taken a beach vacation which seems utterly wrong.

What kind of music do you like? What are your favorite TV shows?

I honestly have a very eclectic taste in music. My favorite bands are Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Outkast, and Portishead. But, I would say that Motown was my favorite genre--how that mixes, I am not sure. I also really love danceable-but-not-technically-dance-music, so like Gorillaz, M.I.A., and the like.

I love Project Runway & Top Chef. I also love pay cable shows, Weeds, Big Love, Curb Your Enthusiasm, True Blood, The Wire (when it was on). DH loves sports, so we watch a lot of those, too.

have you got any funny cat stories?

I''ve got one, if you want to hear it. I don''t have cats anymore, but I did when I was living in the States.

Thank for the thorough replies!!! I do have the lovely MV's, but your amazing blue CL's inspired me to go a different route. Here they are!

I just love the pop of color! It's SO unexpected but so awesome!!!!! I really love the MV's. but the CL's are just incredible.

Congrats on the interview!!!!!!!!!! That's amazing!!!!!! I am sending you TONS and TONS of dust! Are you trying to get into a soc department? Are you planning on researching while teaching? If you are, are you going to stay in the debt domain? What does a university interview entail? I would LOVE to teach eventually.

I played the DJ hero demo in Best Buy, and really sucked at it, lol!!!! It seems really fun! I LOVE all of those games, but FI loves the shooting death games. He is obsessed with Call of Duty (which he tried to get me to play, but I royally sucked at lol!!!!!!) and currently, the new Need For Speed. Once the new CoD comes out next weekend, I'll lost FI to the Xbox for a while!

FI and I love Apples to Apples. Our friends always break it out during parties, and I must say it gets very interesing. What DH's favorite game? Do you guys like playing the same kinds of games?

You guys seem to have a great travel life!!! That's awesome!! FI and I don't have a lot of time to travel. He gets so little time off from work each year, and since I just started at my job, I have no vacay time. We've only taken one mini vacation together, so we are extremely excited about the HM. Where did you and DH go for HM? What is your favorite location in the US? The rest of the world?

What are your favorite sports?? DH's? Do you guys like rival teams?

them! I second the love for a pop of color. It really does so much for the photos--I mean, that is why most brides choose the colors they do, but then the BMs and the flowers get all the fun colors while the bride is all monochromatic. And, on the feet, it doesn''t subtract like a blue dress or hairpiece might, but a subtle touch of awesome
9.gif
. Isn''t the satin just divine, too! I certainly can see the difference in craftship between them and, say, my e-pics shoes.

Thanks for the interview dust!!!!! I really need it! Yes, it is for a soc department at a liberal arts college. I applied to both SLACs (selective liberal arts colleges) and Rs (Research-intensive universities) because I can see myself going in either direction. This school is a dream scenario because I can do both (which is what I would love) and in my dream location, so it really is the dream job. In the academic world, jobs are judged by the teaching load. Most Rs are 2-2 (meaning you teach 2 courses each semester but the classes are generally large and you often get graders or TAs) and most SLACs are 4-4 (meaning the teaching is doubled, although the class size is smaller). Rs want you to focus on your research, so the teaching load is lighter and vice versa for the SLACs. This school is a 2-2, but still with small classes so you can focus on your research. It really is academic heaven (not to mention it is in a city, because most SLACs are out in the middle of nowhere).

I am crazy busy prepping for it and it is a lot of work. It is basically a full two-day interview, with dinner the night before the interview starts and breakfast the day after with the department, so I will be there for over 72-hours, which is stressful enough as it is. I meet with 5 faculty members in the department, 3 faculty members outside of the department (probably the ones they believe I would be most likely to do collaborative work with) where I will talk about all aspects of working/living/service in the community, give a "job talk" which is an hour long presentation on my dissertation research to a collection of about 35 people from the department/students/college/administration, teach a class (that faculty members will observe), meet with administrators (the Provost, college President, and HR reps) and meet with students. I just got my itinerary and it is somewhat overwhelming. Most of my efforts are going into the preparation of the job talk and the teaching demonstration because that tends to be what makes or breaks you, but I am also trying to read the work and study up on everyone I am meeting with. So, a lot of work, but seeing as how there are about 700 PhDs on the job market competing for about 90 jobs, I feel blessed just to have an interview, let alone one at my dream school.

Wherever I work, I will most definitely continue with the debt research. The two professors I am currently working with and I are submitting a huge grant application right now that would fund our current project for 3 years and would require us to turn the research into a book (a boring academic book that no one outside of soc will ever read, but, still pretty exciting). Since not a lot of researchers study debt, we are really confident about the grant, which means a lot of work still to do!

Yay for Apples to Apples! It is an awesome party game! If your friends are into it, I suggest you also get Rorschach--especially with a psych background. It is similar where you are trying to get people to match answers with you, but answering questions about Rorschah blots, like, "Which would be the best pet?" or "Which would be the easiest to carry?". It was nominated for tabletop game of the year last year.

My DH likes tabletop games, but he likes video/computer games more than anything. He used to play online games (like World of Warcraft, but he didn''t actually ever play WOW) before grad school. Since then, though, he plays a lot of console games since they have a start and end, unlike online games. So, he plays Grand Theft Auto, Metroid, Zelda, Fable, and the like. He will certainly be playing Call of Duty, too, so we can be gaming widows together
1.gif

That does make the HM that much more special since you are still just starting your travel lives together! Did you decide on Mexico? I love it there! I haven''t been since I was 23, but have been 5 times. DH and I are really lucky to be grad students because, even though there are no "summers off" we do have the opportunity to take a vacation every summer if we want in the three weeks between summer and fall. That is when we had our wedding. We didn''t take a proper HM, since we got married in Ecuador, but we had a just under a week mini-moon and it was awesome. That is why I want to try to go somewhere tropical this summer, for a proper HM.

My favorite place in the U.S. is San Francisco. Completely urban, yet laid-back, great weather, great food, great people. Plus, you have the beach, but it is not the only thing going on. I pretty much love the west coast as a whole. I have affinity for the East Coast, too, though, since as a kid we always vacationed there--either Ocean City, MD (if all our family went), or the Outer Banks of NC (if it was just me and my mom). So those places are great for sentimental reasons. For the world, I love Amsterdam more than any other place ever! DH used to live there, so while it is still exotic and distinctly European, it also feels so familiar and homey to be there with him since it knows it so well.

DH and I are different in that we don''t like rival teams so much as different sports. He LOVES MLB, NHL, and college football. My favorite sport is college basketball and pro football. We both love the Bengals, though, but they are the only team we have in common.

Oh, and my avatar is from the video game, Katamari Damacy, which is my favorite video game. It is a really trippy game on Playstation where you have a ball that anything can stick to and you roll things up. It is really hard to describe, if you haven''t seen it, but if you and FI have a PS, I highly recommend picking it up. You can get it for $20 since it is an older game (there are newer versions, too), and everyone I know who has ever played it loves it! I sometimes feel like a bad PSer that it isn''t my ring, and have thought about switching. But, since I always get confused when people switch avatars, I never have.

Holy moly!!!!! That interview sounds incredibly intense!!! I am seriously sending you the biggest bag of PS dust ever! It''s so amazing that you were able to get an interview at your dream school. When is the interview? I never realized how intense a university interview would be. Wow, I am just in shock of the intensity! I know you''ll be amazing in it though, kat! Please keep the thread updated with how it goes!!! When would you hear something back after the interview? Do you just get offered the job, or do you have to go for a round two?

Rorschach looks really cool! I''ll have to pick it up before we host another party.

At least you understand the pain of being a gaming widow!! I usually play games on my iphone when FI is blowing cartooned heads off, lol! But, yeah, I''ll be a CoD widow for a few weeks.

FI and I are unsure of where we want to go still. We''ve narrowed it down to Punta Cana, Barbados, Mexico or Jamaica
33.gif
which isn''t really narrowed down at all, lol!!!! We''re going to book in February, so I''ll use the winter break to sit with FI and really hammer down where we want to go. What is your dream travel destination? Where is somewhere that you want to visit, but haven''t yet? What locations are you thinking about traveling to for your real HM? I''ve never been to SF, but I have heard so many people rave about it that it is definitely on my list of top US destinations.

What are DH''s favorite MLB and NHL teams? I ask because those are my top two favorite sports. As far as football is concerned, I''m a 100% green blooded Eagles fan!!!

I have to check out this video game. It seems so cool. We don''t have a PS, but my dad does, so I''ll definitely have to pick it up.

How did DH propose?? And do you have any pics of your bling??? I''d love to see!!!!!
9.gif

katamari - in response to your favorite wedding dress photo you posted in the Newlyweds forum... what is the story behind the Wii at your wedding?

Still prepping for the interview like crazy. I give a practice talk at my school tomorrow, so I feel like an actor trying to memorize it. ACK! If I get the job, I will just get it--no second round or anything, though they might ask for things like chapters from my dissertation if they still have them. I hope that I will find out what they decide by the end of the year (seems like a long wait, but some schools take months, since you don''t start until August).

You can''t go wrong with any of those travel destinations! My dream travel location would be Mauritius. DH always makes fun of me, because I always say "Well, we could always just run away to Mauritius" when we are trying to make serious decisions. As far as where I want to go and haven''t been--Japan, without a question--though there is a million places I would also love to go. I am not sure where we will go to our real HM yet, since it will likely depend on when and where I/we move.

DH loves the Reds (MLB) and the Flames, the Blue Jackets, and the Penguins (NHL), though he is also really cute in that he always roots against the dynasties--so he *hates* the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Red Wings.

As someone from NJ, hopefully you get this, DH proposed when Jaws popped out of the water. DH wanted to be engaged before I did and I always said I wasn''t ready, but I might change my mind if he did it when Jaws popped out of the water (reference is from the Kevin Smith movie, Mallrats). We had just gotten back from a trip to Belgium where we stayed in one of the ten most romantic hotels in Europe (which he knew well about from booking) and I knew he had the ring, so I really thought he was going to do it there. But, he asked at home on "syllabus eve" (the day before the first day of school) because he knows it is my favorite day of the year and it was important for him to happen in our home where we have so many memories. What a sweetie.

Here''s my wedding band one. I have been dropping some pretty serious hints/demands that I want studs for my graduation present. So hopefully I will have more bling soon!

katamari - in response to your favorite wedding dress photo you posted in the Newlyweds forum... what is the story behind the Wii at your wedding?

We actually had 3 Wii''s and a PS3! lol. DH and I are huge gamers and we decided early on that we wanted to incorporate gaming somehow in our reception. We set up a "Wii-zebo" with all the televisions and equipment. We thought it would be fun and would give our guests something to do because a lot of them were not types to dance but still like to be silly. It was actually a huge hit and, because a lot of our relatives have older kids who would be bored stiff at weddings, a lot of our guests have commented on how happy they were to have something that interested them.

gaming is fun! but I'm not very good at it, except for the Harry Potter games. maybe I'll give it another shot when I'm home over the holidays.

almost forgot... that's quite a different avatar!
