Apple Pay, PayPal cut off sites linked to white supremacists
Payments giants disable support for sites that promote hate or sell items glorifying white supremacists.

Apple and PayPal are taking aim at websites that sell apparel glorifying white nationalists and support hate groups.

Apple has disabled Apple Pay support for several websites that sell sweaters and T-shirts with Nazi symbols and "white pride." The move comes on the heels of the violent white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, which culminated in the death of a woman on Saturday.

Apple confirmed it pulled support from the sites, noting that their activity violated long-standing Apple Pay community guidelines. Apple CEO Tim Cook was quite vocal about his feelings in a tweet Monday, calling the terror of white supremacists and racist violence "an affront to America," adding, "We must all stand against it."

Earlier Wednesday, payments giant PayPal said it would disable its service on sites that accept payments or raise funds to promote hate, violence and intolerance.

"Regardless of the individual or organisation in question, we work to ensure that our services are not used to accept payments or donations for activities that promote hate, violence, or racial intolerance," the company said in a statement. "This includes organisations that advocate racist views, such as the KKK, white supremacist groups, or Nazi groups."

Apple and PayPal are the latest companies seeking to quash white supremacist activity on the web. Reddit and Facebook have each banned entire hate groups in the wake of the Charlottesville attack, and on Monday, GoDaddy and Google pulled the domain for the neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer. Prior to the Charlottesville protest, Airbnb quietly began deactivating accounts renting out their properties for white supremacist parties in the city.

Thanks, Matata. I don't know how you always have the important news first. On another note, I want information about that macho white supremacist who was in the HBO special unloading all his guns (then his knife) to show the reporter, who I later saw crying in a brief film clip. I believe he said, through tears, that he thought he was going to be killed by officials in jail. (I may be wrong.) He is the man who said, coolly, in response to the reporter's comment that someone had died at the hands of a white supremacist, that he expected more deaths. I guess that, despite, all the weaponry, he didn't really expect to fight? At least not with any possibility of laying down his life? He belittles Jews. He didn't like seeing the president's "beautiful daughter" with "that b*stard Jared Kushner" (who is a Jew) How do you think he would do in the IDF (The Israeli Defense Forces)? If he is jailed (apparently he was crying because there was a warrant out for his arrest), he should be forced to watch the movie "Operation Thuderbolt". It is based on the actual story of the rescue by the Israeli Defense Forces of the hostages taken on the Air France flight and flown to Uganda. It was a truly impossible rescue and only the Israelis could have pulled it off. Bebe Netanyahu's brother, Jonathan, who played a key role in the rescue, was killed during the mission. Some people give their lives for others; they do not just try to take them. I am well aware that the American military, not just the Israeli military, is full of heroes. (My own father served in the US Army during World War II.) My point is that this coward disparaging Jews is ludicrous.

That link did not work for me. I think this is it:

Uh oh! Hitting Trump in the pocketbook is likely to make him cry!

Just so that PayPal and etc. ban gets applied equally to ALL of the hate groups, not only the aforementioned. I'm not a Pamela Geller disciple by any stretch. but I do read her news feed because even a stopped clock is right twice a day. ;-) The attached was an interesting comment posted by a reader on her Facebook. Certainly, the laws and the reprimands and the exclusions should be applied equally to all.

I fail to see why all of this emo show over Confederate flags and statues and what people who have been deceased for over 100 years may or may not have said, done, or believed was not decried as utter nonsense whenever it first started. Some inanimate object that's been sitting in plain view for decades if not more than a century suddenly poses a threat to some group or other? What are Confederate statues going to do, suddenly hop down and start chasing dark-skinned people?? pfft! Just more emo bullshite from childish annoyances who've been watching too many special effects movies or something. Statues stand immobile in one place. Flags are pieces of cloth that either wave and flap in the breeze or hang limp as a dishrag. I say leave the art objects and flags where they are and ENFORCE the existing laws regarding property damage and other crimes. If these rioting nonsensical wastes of everyone's time persist, then declare martial law and clear the streets. I am tired of all the simpletons get attention for creating stupid and disruptive babyish simpleton displays, especially when they repeatedly result in riots, people injured or killed, buildings set on fire, etc.

Get out the water canons and give the streets a good hosing the next time "protesters" even start to disturb the peace. Whichever ones can't manage to get up and run. apprehend and arrest. If people can't manage their own behavior in an adult, civil, and law-abiding way, have military and law enforcement step in and manage it for them. Who cares. Quit giving all the disruptive idiots hours of free publicity in the media. They are ALL ruining quality of life for the majority of good people in this country, and making America look bad worldwide. The whole world doesn't know that there are thousands of towns in America where absolutely nothing happened today, except that people went to work, did their jobs without putting on a show, maybe did some shopping, got along with everyone they met all day, put gas in the car and went home to have dinner, if all they see and read is this crap being hyped to death by news media.

Its like you dont even get it...

eta - I also find it highly offensive that you are considering KKK views towards non-whites as "childish annoyances".

My friend ended up talking to the older (African American) bus driver, as she said
"he's kind of a friend, and once on an empty bus heading to East he explained to me how to 'line out' songs for black gospel singing. (He's in a quartet.) Hey did you hear about the courthouse thing last night? I asked. You know they pulled that confederate statue down. He was quite surprised. He talked about having to see that statue every time he went to the courthouse and said, "If it's history put it in a museum, not someplace where everyone has to go." Having lived with the presence of that statue all his life, he was sorry to learn that the event had taken place without him."

Frankly, I am white. I never even noticed or took in the significance that there was a statue of a confederate soldier (man in gray) standing in vigil in front of the courthouse. But I am not black. I didn't grow up or experience Jim Crow. From this bus driver's musing, I imagine there were many people of color who felt a message being sent of that confederate statue in front, but also perhaps wrongly, were used to those messages. So it shouldn't be up to me to decide whether people are uncomfortable or not seeing symbols of a war that divided this country, a war to keep in place legal slavery.

And as far as what the poster above says, if these statues etc, are just inanimate objects, you have made a great case for removing them, as yes the statue's feelings won't be hurt by it. And we shouldn't be troubled by "what people who have been deceased for over 100 years may or may not have said, done, or believed."

Something I have been thinking about, is what is termed "the paradox of tolerance". That I believe in a free, open, democratic society. A society with freedom of speech, and freedom of the press. But even free speech has it's limits. Your rights are limited when they infringe on other people's rights. That's right, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When marchers surround traditionally black churches at night holding torches (OK, tiki lights) chanting they won't be replaced, blocking entrances, they are creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. When marchers show up armed literally to the teeth with multiple guns, helmets, sheilds and batons, that is no longer freedom of speech. It is incitement to violence, and actual threats of violence. And if we allow this kind of intolerance to be winked and nodded at, we are at risk of losing the very ideal our country was founded on; freedom from persecution.

Yeah, totally. It's like, Nazis were bad, but did the Jews have a permit? And we had a black president! What MORE do dark skinned folk want?! When the Nazis started building concentration camps, the cops shoulda just sprayed everyone with a hose and told them to go have some schnitzel.

Trump said, that the protesters had a permit, and the counter-protesters did not. Like many things Trump says, and repeats (and his supporters repeat without checking) is wrong! When will people realize not to take at face value anything that comes out of this guys mouth? He reads conspiracy websites and repeats what he reads! But again, as he has said famously, he knows more than his generals.

Not withstanding who was morally in the right, the protesters were not legally more in the right to be there than the people counter-protesting. The "fact" that protesters threw the first punch or that the white protesters did not have weapons like mace, cans filled with concrete, and did not shoot their guns is also not supported by witnesses.

They did NOT have a permit to be where the clashes happened though. See, this is what makes me infuriated. I hate trump and didn't vote for him.

The media cannot stretch the truth to fit a narrative they want to create.

"Walt Heinecke, a professor at the University of Virginia, told Moyer that he received a “special events certificate of approval” for events at McGuffey Park and Justice Park — sites blocks from Emancipation Park, where white nationalists had a permit for a Saturday rally."

They had a permit to gather BLOCKS away.

The counter protesters didn't stay where they were permitted to gather.

They were NOT permitted to gather at Emancipation Park, where the white supremacists were.

So now guess what? Trump supports will be right when they say "fake news". Trump was right. The counter protestors did not have a permit to be at Emancipation Park, where the clashes happened.

The counter-protesters were given a permit to hold rallies at Justice Park and McGuffey Park, while the protesters won a judgement to be able to hold a rally at Emancipation Park. But if you look at the map, Emancipation Park is between Justice Park and McGuffey Park. Counter-protesters can reasonably be in the vicinity of Emancipation Park while walking back and forth the two permitted sites. It's poor planning on the city's part.

Whitewave, I noticed that too. The areas where people clashed were in public spaces like parks. Including parks like Justice Park where counter-protesters had a permit, but the white supremacists did not.
Charlottesville police also state the protesters were in the wrong, because the white supremacists went back on a plan to keep the 2 groups separated, and instead engaged the counter-protesters. The first protesters to go down were outside the park where they had a permit, and at the entrance of the park where they had a permit, where clergy and church congregants who had linked arms. Rather than not engage the marchers came with their shields and literally pushed them down.
This doesn't even get into the issue that the town itself did not want the white supremacists to march so close downtown and revoked the permit. Kessler appealed along with help of ACLU and This permit was re-instated judjicially a week before the march. And- doesn't get into the fact that the night before the permitted march, the marchers marched and surrounded traditionally black churches in an intimidating manner.

OK. Thanks. I didn't get enough details to figure out it was a moving situation...

I completely disagree with this author. I completely agree with the first commenter who said basically that the media gave a couple of hundred of neo nazis (out of a U.S. population of 320 million) free publicity, time on the news, a week of coverage... for what?

We should have ignored them. Instead we gave them free publicity.

Monitor them, but ignore them. They aren't worth our time.

It's too late to ignore them. They're in the White House making policies: Muslim ban, reducing legal immigration, transsexuals not allowed in the military, if the ACHA passed it would have eliminated Planned Parenthood funding. They may be a fringe group, but they have outsize influence.

Even without the media, these extremist groups have a way to spread their message. At least the mainstream media showed that there are many many more people in opposition. In the same way that many of us here are grateful to read that others are just as outraged about Trump, it is good to see people fighting against these white supremacists. Even if the media publicized the extremists, it also gave airtime to the anti-extremists which I bet encouraged people to join and mobilize against white nationalists -- many more than those who joined the white supremacists.

I have to admit that I am impressed. I had not seen it before. Thank you for sharing it on Pricescope, Partgypsy.
