so i was searching for insurance policies and came upon this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/forum/rockytalky/ring-stolen-out-of-fedex-box-t64795-30.html where a person''s ring had been stolen from the fed ex box before it was delivered. Because the Fed-ex employee noticed that the box had been opened, the claim was filed immediately.

My ring is being delivered via fed-ex and I don''t live in the best neighborhood so I asked the vendor to have the ring held at the Fed Ex building so that I can pick it up there. One of the scenarios in the thread above was that someone could steal a ring and then reseal the package so that the recipient will sign for the box not knowing that anything had been done. Now, is there any way of protecting myself from that? Is there any means of making a claim once I''ve signed for the item? I understand I''m probably being VERY paranoid, but it worries me that that could happen. Should I open the box in front of the Fed-ex employee and double check the contents? I''m not sure if that''s a wise idea either.

Also a question about insurance. My gf is at school currently and so lives in a dorm. I plan on going through Jewelers Mutual but wasn''t sure if I should put her permanent address or her school address.

Thanks so much for all your guys'' help thus far!!

Hi - not sure what vendor is shipping to you, but if you are worried I recommend you calling them and seeing what they recommend in these situations - they have obviously done this lots of times. I agreed, I would not want to open a diamond ring in front of a stranger, either!! At a minimum I would carefully check my box before signing for it - high end goods are frequently taped/packaged in such a way that tampering would be easier than usual to spot (none of my jewelry ever came in a straight FedEx box, it was all packaged by the store and just shipped via FedEx.) Good luck!

Hi!

When we recieved our loose diamond via FedEx, we also requested that it be held at the office. I noticed that the box was taped up with tamper proff tape (the tape that has writing all over it so you can tell if someone took it off and retaped it). I would definitely just inspect the box while your at the office to make sure that it looks clean. I''m pretty sure anyone that ships anything that of substantial value will use tamperproof tape (my Gucci purse came in a sealed with tamper proof tape). If it looks like its been messed around with, call the vendor you got it from (at the office) and ask them what you should do.

Thanks so much for the quick responses! Like I said, I was probably being overly paranoid, but the hypothetical situation crossed my mind and I wasn''t able to get it off my mind. I hate it when that happens. I know most people on here must be getting these expensive items via shipping so I knew someone could give me a good answer. The tamper proof packaging makes a lot of sense and I''ll make sure I have the vendor''s (Blue Nile) number on my speed dial when I go pick it up.

Thanks so much!

Blue nile is where we got our diamond from and we had no problem with picking it up from the fedEx office, they packaged it wonderfully....
