As I've already posted, I purchased the 1.79 OEC from JBEG (thank you, Armywife13 and Grace!). Once the payment cleared, Grace was kind enough to send it to Dave Atlas for an appraisal as he's a member here and I've read other PSr's experience with him. Anyway, the appraisal came back as expected, a little lower in color and clarity than the EGL. In addition to that the girdle is bruted and very thin with a couple of very minor chips. Having said all that, I've decided to send it to Ari at Single Stone for polishing and/or re-cut (whichever he deems is better) although Dave stated on the appraisal that it needs just polishing and I trust him on that. But now, I'm extremely nervous about doing this (and I won't even receive the diamond until tomorrow). I know Ari did a fantastic job on Kelpie's OEC, but still really, really nervous about this. Plus, I will probably insure the diamond while it is being polished/re-cut. Am I doing the right thing?

I think you should see it in person before you decide to risk the polish/recut. If you can't see the issues, why bother?

I don't think you can insure a loose diamond during such things either.

I just had an OEC recut by BGD for exactly the same reason. It had a chip on the girdle and a very thin girdle.

You need to understand that polishing diamonds is different than polishing gems. Polishing with diamonds IS cutting. You use the wheel.

Here are my before and after. I only lost one point. I went from 1.26 to 1.25. Now the stone is worry free for wearing. PLUS, when I got the stone back from recut I literally gasped. The polish made a huge difference in how much fire I am getting from the stone. It's just-- crisper and brighter. Totally worth it in my opinion.

Thank you Dreamer and Gypsy.

Dreamer - Single Stone takes liability for the diamond while it's being re-cut at a fee of 5-8% of the value of the diamond. Otherwise, no, I wouldn't be able to insure it. I did have a look it at and what a beauty it is, however, my reasoning was to do this would give me peace of mind to go with whatever setting I choose and not be limited to bezels, which I think I might be with the girdle as is.

Gypsy - Even though I wasn't able to respond right away, I was able to read the post and it made me feel so much better. Thank you. Your OEC looks great after the re-cut! Is this the one you're selling though?

I think you left your stone in hands of professionals- and I can't wait to see before and after pics!

Thank you, Amy! I appreciate that from you also. I have never worked with SS before now, but have had numerous email communications with them and have been very impressed with how nice they are, so I agree with you. Unfortunately, the only before shots are on JBEG's site. Bad PS'r, I know. :nono: But I may post the diagram the Dave sent in the appraisal showing where the chips are.

I sent my stone to Dave and he is awesome; he KNOWS old stones!!! I agree w/Drea; look at it and if you see nothing I wouldn't worry. Where is the nick? Or is it on the girdle? If so then have it polished and no worries.

oh and I am not claiming to be an expert. hehe

I'd definitely do it so you aren't limited to a bezel setting. Compare prices with BG. They did a nice job on Gypsy's stone.

I would pay to insure it personally, too much worry otherwise, if you recut.

Well if Dave says it needs a polish I would just get the polish and do have it insured. I am dying to see how you set it!!! :D eta: unless Ari thinks otherwise; I think they cost about the same.

Skippy, you are more of an expert than I am. ha ha How is the setting search going with your stone? Have you found something yet? Do tell, do tell! ha ha

Thank you, DS. He's also only about 45 minutes from where I live so I will definitely check with him also! I'm definitely more of a prong girl then a bezel girl. I love LGK's bezel though, but it would take me about a year to save for the setting (which I'm fine with) and it's definitely a consideration; I just don't want to be limited to that.

This exactly! I wouldn't be able to replace the diamond for a couple of years if something happened to it, so I definitely need to insure it just in case.

Well I need to wait because the setting I like is about 6k. Why do we tend to like the most expensive? hehe

I want to know about YOUR setting!!! Your stone is Amazing!!! :appl: I was so excited when I saw which stone you bought! Isn't Dave Atlas the best? I would love to spend a day watching him appraise stones.

Yep, we do tend to like the more expensive settings.

Thank you! I'm pretty excited about the stone. I thought for sure it was going to be Kelpie's setting, but I'm really loving the VC bezel that LGK has, which like your case, is about 6k. ha ha

LOL, isn't how it always works? Yay, that is a gorgeous setting! I love those french cuts!

Yup, it is the stone I'm selling. But it has nothing to do with the beauty of the stone. In a perfect world with lots of money, I'd keep the sucker, but it's not a perfect world. I just changed my mind about what I wanted.

Looking forward to the progress on your project!

SparklyOEC-I am sorry to hear about the chips on the girdle. Truth be told, I never had the diamond in my possession, so I was unaware. I had purchased it and then by the time it was paid off decide I wanted a different diamond :errrr: so it was relished. I hope the repolish turns out great!

The VC bezel is a stunning setting, your diamond would look great in it. I had originally considered it for the 1.79 and am considering it for my new OEC as well. It's is definitely a WOW setting and would be a great forever home for your new diamond!

Oh no, Armywife, please don't apologize! The diamond is beautiful in person. It's very, very minor. This is typical on a lot of the old cut stones and not completely unexpected. It is a personal choice to have the diamond polished so I can have more peace of mind and more choices when I set it. Plus, SS said they'd be able to retain the flowery facet pattern, which is just as important to me as the diamond's durability (safety?), and I'm sure BG will be able to do the same. It just makes me nervous to ship it again, and have it polished, but that's what PS is here for and of course, insurance! ha ha

Tell me about your diamond! I would love to hear about it!

Oh okay. What have you decided to do instead?

Our situation that allowed us to do this was probably one in a million for us. I'm looking forward to see what I finally decide on to, and how long it'll take me to save for it. ha ha

FYI-I meant to say relisted not relished....darn autocorrect!

I am sure it will all turn out great, SS is great! I am so glad to hear that they will be able to keep the face ring pattern, it is stunning. I am purchasing from jbeg as well, the 3.62 OEC that is shown in the Gabbie halo setting folder, it was the special in December. I won't have it for quite a while though, it is taking a little time to get it paid off, Grace has been amazing helping me out with a timeline for payments. Once I have that all done, then I have to figure out the setting, either the Julia from Jbeg, VC bezel, or a plain vintage solitaire Jbeg said they could make for me....who knows. But I have quite a while until that happens, so I will have ago live vicariously through you! :D I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your OEC, especially since I never saw it in person! It is such a beaut

How beautiful it is! I can't wait to see pics of it when you get it. Grace is a doll, really loved working with her also! If I'm correct, we're all going to have beautiful OEC rings by mid-summer or fall. ha ha...totally worth it to get the right stone and setting.

Mine will be more towards fall, but totally worth it! I cannot wait...we will finally both have our gorgeous rings!
