FedEx just delivered my diamond engagment ring from Blue Nile. It's a little smaller than I imagined it. I was having second thoughts at first but the more I look at it, the more I think I made the right choice. It sparkles like crazy!

I don't know why, but I'm extremely nervous now haha. I'm still not sure how/when I'm going to propose. I know she'll say yes, she's dying for me to ask her so that's not why I'm nervous. I don't know what it is. Lots of things I guess.

One of them, should I ask her dad/mom&dad for their blessing first? They live 5 hours away so it would almost have to be on the phone. I can't think of any way I'd be able to do it in person without waiting until probably February and then I'd still have to sneak it in. My girlfriend is really nosy. She has never said anything on this subject and I hate to bring it up because I don't want to tip her off on how close this proposal is.

Her parents and her sort of act religous in some ways (like my girlfriend will not say "oh my god" for example... she uses "gosh") but none of them go to church. I think her dad is/was mormon and her mom I think is/was Christian?? Anyhow, I only bring that up because maybe one of those religions think it's a must to ask for the blessing. I don't know, I'm not religous.

Also, the ring came with a "estimated retail value" appraisal of $4,450 (which is nearly double what I paid for it) but that was by someone that works with/for Blue Nile. Should I be taking this ring to someone ASAP for another type of appraisal and also to check and see if the diamond I got matches the one on the GIA report? My diamond is not engraved with a number but it has the plot which I was told is better... although it sounds to me like the engraved number would be better!

~~That''s so exciting!! I would get a second appraisal done, just to make sure that everything is in working order. Good luck with the proposal!!

I agree with BD, and be sure to get it insured promptly!

get the appraisal checked for your sanity. I am a Christian, and I don''t think there is any ''rule'' in the religion per sey about asking the parents, I just think that is more of a courtesy than anything else. I would ask them.

Jim-

Congratulations!

We ordered my e-ring from BLue Nile waaaaay back in November 2002 and what we did was we took it to an independent appraiser to make sure that 1) The diamond matched the GIA report 2) That the GIA report was correct and 3) to get the appraiser''s estimated value fo the ring for insurance purposes.

The BN appraisal is what you would have paid (again, estimated) had to gone to a b&m store. If you look at the appraisal from BN, it should say (at least mine does) retail amount. I call it the "feel good" appraisal

Anyway, my diamond did appraise $2500 more than what we paid (according to our independent appraiser''s report). Definitely get that sucker insured!

Good luck!

Hey sounds like exciting times! I would call her parents, it can''t hurt and it''s a courtesy to them that will most likely appreciate. Let us know how everything goes!

DH and I just had that moment 2 weeks ago, lol. My ring from BN came already in the setting so I never saw it loose until we took it out of my original setting (which was damaged and can''t be buffed out) and the jeweler gave me my diamond in a little clear bag. We took it out at home and couldn''t beleive how small it looked out of the setting! Of course DH said he can''t believe he paid $X of dollars for such a small thing, lol. Oh well, I love it!

Congratulations on getting the ring. Yes, take it to get an independent appraisal, and get insurance ASAP.

Speaking as a mom, it would be nice for you to ask the parents for their blessing. Could you call them and ask them to meet you halfway for lunch and then ask them? I''m Christian, and I don''t know that it''s mandatory. Just shows respect to the parents by letting them know your intentions. And take the ring so they can see it.

I'm sure asking for a blessing is no mandatory Christian thing but I think her parents wouls be impressed if you did. It just sounds like a nice idea. I think over the phone is fine.

Yup, asking the parents is a good idea. My boyfriend''s been wondering if phone is okay. What do you all think?

As for a phone call to ask for my blessing....I wouldn''t like that very well. Personally, I think it should be face to face. I''d want to see the guys face when he asked for my blessing, and of course the ring.

I think if everyone was nearby, then a face to face meeting would be preferable, but with a 5 hour distance, I think the phone is fine. I am also a Christian and the mother of college age kids, and I agree with the others that asking for the parents blessing is not any kind of religious requirement. I think it''s a good way to start out as a good son-in-law, though! And I really don''t think anyone needs to see the ring before the girl. I think she will have such pleasure showing it to family after the proposal! I wouldn''t say anything to them until right before the proposal, though. That kind of thing woud be hard to keep secret for long!

My DH asked my father on the phone (we live 14 hrs from my parents) and again in person during the proposal (my family was there). I think the phone is just fine. Good luck.
