Hey guys,
I''ve been reading this forum for awhile now and it''s great. I only read the forums because I''m still new to the diamond world and don''t have much knowledge to offer. However, I decided to register because I want your opinions about a diamond I purchased for my gf. I will be proposing tomorrow.

The only thing she hinted at in the past was that it has to be round and the ring silver. So...I bought a .61 carat, round cut, color J, VS2 diamond. Once I propose I will take her back to the store so she can pick out the ring she wants. I wanted to surprise her, but at the same time I didn''t want to get a ring she didn''t love...so I figured this would be the best way to go.

For an extra thousand bucks (that''s what my budget allows) will she be able to pick out a decent ring?

It''s been a long time coming and tomorrow is the big day...so wish me luck. I''ll take her to our old hiking spot...I just hope she loves the diamond.

Thanks for reading guys...and I appreciate any input/advice.

It sounds like you have been planning something special for a long time and personally picked out your prize stone--and you are set! Kudos for all your hard work and no matter what anyone here or offline thinks of your diamond, you deserve a magical day tomorrow! (I think folks here would probably want some specs with numbers and maybe a picture, and probably want to tell you what they think if you asked BEFORE purchasing, but hey, it''s done and you deserve to RELAX now!!)

Post some pics so we can drool. Okay?

Oh, and about the setting: I''d tell your gf up front the budget so you are on the same page before entering the store.

Another route would be to post details about what she wants and let people here guide you to online vendors who can custom make, or have for her, something that she likes, at a savings to you. I believe you get a bit of a discount for being a ps member.

Welcome Whit!

Congrats on your purchase and the best of luck with your proposal tomorrow! Do you mean you want a white gold setting for the diamond when you say silver? If so, yes you can get a nice setting for $1k. Please post pics of the ring when it is completed, we would love to see it!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yeah probably should have come on here first and asked...but when I saw the diamond in the store and the guy took me outside so I can see it in daylight I knew I wanted it. She's a petite girl...and I think this is the right size. Definately didn't want something under half carat and the .61 just seemed perfect.

I was hoping to get a setting with something similar to this:
http://www.bluenile.com/product_feedback.asp?oid=5410&filter_id=0&track=row_mod1&elem=txt&nav1=settings%5Fchannel%2Easp&nav2=all%5Fsettings%2Easp%3Fcatid%3D93

I think that's what she's looking for. That seemed to have good reviews. Oh, and to answer the question...by silver I mean white gold, yes...and I'll definately let her know the budget before going in haha. My luck she'll pick out a $4,000 setting! lol

Hopefully she won't choose a 4k setting! The setting you have in mind is lovely and hopefully you can find something similar in the store. That was good that the guy at the jewellers let you take the diamond outside to view it, that is so helpful to see the stone in ' real life' conditions away from the store lights, also .61 is a nice size.

I hope you have a magical and memorable day tomorrow, please post some pics of the ring when you are able!

You have great taste! And....I see it has a matching band....

Thanks!

I''ll take her to the store where I bought the diamond and if she doesn''t like anything (YEAH RIGHT)...I can always show her that setting on bluenile. Or maybe I''ll show her first...that would probably be the safe thing to do for my wallet, LOL. j/k

Okay, like, I can see it now... first, you are on one knee, and then you are cuddled up in front of the computer scoping out ring sets.
So many parameters here! Where to start?! Do you have any clues to what she likes? Has she or her sister/mother/left magazine pages open or taped to your mirrors/steering wheel/dog''s collar any pictures?
You know, you could just trust your instincts and buy what you think she''ll like and propose with it.
It''s kinda like Christmas trees, when you start looking, they ALL look good.
I''ve changed my setting at least 3 times over our 24 yr marriage. I''m no help. lol lol

Well...in her words:
"I want a round stone and the ring has to be silver. I don''t want just one center stone...it has to have other ''friends.'' Oh, and some small stones on the sides of the ring itself."

Hey...the one I picked out on bluenile covers everthing. But I''ll let her see for herself. She might like something better at the jewelry store. Women love all rings, but they''re only IN love with one. Ok...that''s a quote my jeweler gave me, but I have to agree.

OMG, she''s seen what she likes SOMEWHERE. That description was just TOO spot on.

j/k

You sound like a true sweetie with a sense of humor. I think it''s adorable, you youngin''s, you.

"With friends"--makes me giggle.

Have fun looking!

Ok...people have told me that having the 2 side stones detracts from the center stone...and to not go with this setting if the center stone isn''t big enough.

What do you guys think about this?

Honestly? Okay, my setting is like this with two small rounds flanking the center stone. I have had different numerous sized round brilliant center stones in this same setting, and I can truthfully say that what you have heard appeared true, for me. That is, about 1/4 c stones flanking up to a 1 c center stone made the center stone look smaller.

However, I have seen some settings with pear stones, each facing away from the center, with a smaller center stone- that looked very complimentary together.

Also, I think a different shape of center stone, flanked by small round stones, works.

I''ve never had a halo of diamonds surrounding the center stone, but I have seen pictures here that made the center stone "pop."

It sounds like she''s seen a picture of something she really likes. I wish you could get your hands on that. Anyway, maybe an eternity band (with smaller, pave type diamonds)with a solitaire mounted on it would be in line with something she''d like?

I''ll show her this setting and see what she likes.

Is there any settings that you described at bluenile so I can see what you''re talking about?

I''ll go look, and in the meantime, we''ll let people from around the world (literally) wake up and chime in. Other people who browse the sites regularly usually can find things fairly quickly.

I like how the center mount of the setting you showed is higher than the sides. I didn''t mean to distract you from your first choice--it would really be beautiful. It really just boils down to what speaks to you. I''ll go look at BN and report back what I find...

Another alternative would be to make a phone call to one of the vendors here, like White Flash or Good Old Gold; Both of which I have read numerous good reports about as far as being able to pick up the phone and speak directly to someone and out ask frankly for help with such-n-such design... that might be an avenue I''d take, as well. They might be able to suggest something you haven''t seen yet, and they can email a pic to you. Just a thought.

it just depends on how big the sidestones are. I''d say you''re definitely ok with something like the BN one, which has smaller sides. I''d probably keep the friends under 10 or 15 points.

I went through the building process on the BN site and this is what your ring would look like, with the round sides.
I think it''s very pretty. I looked all around last night and wasn''t able to find anything that had everything the way I was trying to picture it. I wonder if the jeweler where you purchased the diamond might have something that you could go preview?
So, how do you like this look?

Here''s a BN set in a cathedral style with the pave...it has a matching band...the whole set is 1275. Cathedral raises the center stone up and I think tends to spotlight it. Anyone out there have an opinion on this?

edited to say--wrong pic! Sorry...scroll down...

I need coffee.

The one with the sides and pave, larger image.

Just to see nearly together to compare...the one just above with this one...

Is it me, or does the one with side stones sort of nestle the rock down in the setting slightly?

I also like the look of the style that Skippy put up near the top. It highlights the center rock a lot.
Ok, I''ll stop rambling now.

Thanks for all the help, Julia.

Just wanted to let you all know that I proposed today and she said YES!

But the most important part...was she liked the rock! Now we have to find a setting. I showed her the one online that I showed you guys earlier and she likes it...but said she wants to see it in person first. We''re going to the jeweler on Thursday to check out some others.

Will keep everyone posted. Thanks again for all your help!

Aw, gee. I''m a sucker for romance. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy hunting on Thursday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is SUCH a special time in your lives (duh!). I wish you all the very best.

JJ

Congratulations! Thanks for sharing your story...we all love happy endings, or beginnings in this case!!

Come back once you have picked out the setting. Looking forward to seeing pictures!!

Congrats!!!!!!!

Hey guys.

Well....we went today to pick out the setting. Not only did she find one...but we got it sized in 3 hours! Now she's wearing it around. Not only that...but the setting came as a set so I had to buy the wedding band as well. Of course...she wanted to wear that too! lol
Here's some pics of the ring...and also one of the ring and band.

As you can see she went with the baguette (I think that's what it's called) style and not the pave set. She absolutely loved it and knew she had to have it. So here it is!

Ok..for some reason it won''t let me post the other pic. I''ll see what I can do to fix it.

Might try resizing it. I love the setting! Great choice.
