My boyfriend just purchased a round brilliant from blue nile and I am really concerned that he made a bad choice!!
I originally gave him five diamonds to choose from ranging in price from 11000-15500 pretty much in order from worst to best-

Anyway- i emailed them to him and since found out that he bought the cheapest one!! Which is so not like him! But they were all very close in carat weight so I think he just figured they were all the same just some more expensive than others (MEN!!!)
Anyway here are the specs of the one he bought

ideal cut
ideal polish and symmetry
1.68 carat
I color
VS2
table 55%
depth 61.5
crown angle 35.3
pavillion ang. 40.6
pointed culet
7.62*7.67*4.70
$11,100

All of his friends wives and fiances have 3crt plus diamonds and have NO sparkle!!! lets just say that while out to dinner with his buddy- his buddy told us that his jeweler could get us a 3 carat for less than 15000--- I told him no way-- if he can than its probably not something I would want!!! basically what I am trying to say is that I have taken control of this whole diamond thing because I was terrified that he would go through one of his friends jewelers and not realize the low quality he was getting--- Now im afraid that mine might not be so hot either!!!! Please help! its not too late- the diamond hasnt been shipped yet!!!! ALso-- is I too yellow??? it will be set in a platinum solitaire setting. but im hoping my tan will make it look whiter for the first few months!

i think it sounds fabulous...................blue nile is a good company and the stone really does sound great

If he bought from BN, he might have spoken with one of their jewelers to get an idea of which diamond looked the nicest and it happened to be the least costly...do you know if he consulted with anyone from BN??

I know he did talk to a few people- but I dont know the extent- I think it probably just had to do with payment-- I really hope it is nice--

it sounds very nice.........i'm sure you won't be dissapointed

please post pics when you get it!!

I agree, actually looks quite nice, with an HCA of 1.1, xxxvg, I think it''s likely to be lovely; I should certainly be pretty colorless.

I think I''m lucky my wife never discovered Pricescope, I''ll say that.

The cut on that stone looks killer. It''s going to sparkle like mad! Were the other stones of higher color possibly making them more $? I think you have a very sizeable diamond with great cut for the price. And an I color is very nice-- it will look white in platinum for sure. Only next to a colorless diamond will you notice any slight warm tinge from the side, most likely.

What setting will you get? Don''t forget to share pics!

We love to see pretty diamonds.

Great job!!!

Your choice from BN sounds great !

Sure there are 3 carat diamonds for 15k... thing M-N color. If that is fine with you, one could get ideal cut. There's is some fan club for such stones as well - remember "Stephan's stone" ? (LINK)

I somehow doubt this is what the jeweler had it mind: it can be, but large M color H&A are by no means a common choice or easily found merchandise. As far as I know

I think you will be very happy with this stone!!! Make sure you post pics when you get it. Blue Nile is a very good company.

Looking at the specs, it looks like it's gonna sparkle like crazy. It's an ideal cut with ideal polish and symmetry. A great cut like that can even hide some of the color. I think he did fine.

What exactly are you worried about? You mention charcoal looking diamonds, yet you show an ideal cut diamond that he picked. I know us guys don't always pay attention to details, but sometimes we come through. Ask us about details concerning cars or electronics and we'll prolly know. I'm thinking he did his homework on this one. I can appreciate severe apprehension over such a large purchase, but I'm starting to wonder if you know what constitutes a sparkly looking diamond or if you were just hoping for the most expensive diamond based on his past purchasing history.

I have an Ideal cut diamond in I color and it looks great--not yellow at all. Someone posted it on Rings, 3 carats and over and you can see it there. There are many discerning people on here who have bought I and J stones and are very happy with them. You get much more for your money with the drop in color and your ring will be so bright and sparkly because of the cut that it will not look yellow.
You can see many of them posted on Pricescope.
Some people are very sensitive to color and want to stick with G or better. If you get the ring and find that you are very color sensitive, I am sure you can exchange it.
Good luck. Hope you ae happy with the stone.

Actually im just concerned cuz its such an expensive purchase!! I guess I just spent so much time looking for something nice that im starting to worry- I just want it to be perfect for the money- even if it means going done in size... A car seems like such an easier purchase- and one that is pretty temporary when you compare it to a diamond that will be worn for the rest of ones life!!! Ugh! im glad u guys took the time to respond.. Im sure it will be beautiful. I just need to stop reading all the posts on hearts and arrows and possible tints in near colorless diamonds. I keep getting myself worried that I could have gotten something better??? Well- Im glad this whole process is over and I can stop searching for perfection or as much perfection as we can afford!! Time to focus on all the minor details of a wedding!!! Im sure that will be worse!!! I will post pics next week of the ring!!!

This looks like a beautiful stone. Since it is one that you included in your list, and it specs out to be beautiful, I would suggest you put the stone specs behind you and focus on the sentiment. There are LOTS of expenses associated with getting married and setting up house. Now you will have some money left over for them, so that's a good thing!

ETA: Codex is right... sometimes the guys do get it right. GIve him the benefit of the doubt and be happy about the whole thing. This is a big moment

valeria101 -- thank you so much for the link! it makes me feel better to see that the salesman observed how most people naturally gravitated to the warmer colors! Having not seen all the shades in person I havent the slightest Idea if ill be able to even tell the difference. I probably should have went to a jewelry store and checked out the ranges in color before including the I''s on my list of approved diamonds but Im terrified of salesman! I always end up buying from them cuz i feel bad wasting their time! So Im going blind and thats another reason my nerves are shot!

That''s a perfectly good reason. Most people want to make the perfect purchase since it''s such a large amount of money and symbolizes so much. Unfortunately, it''s a much harder buy IMO than say a car or house cuz there are so many variables and there are no real "standards." Best not to think about it too much and worry about the wedding. You''re gonna pull your hair out over the wedding details. I think the wedding planning is FAAAARRR worse than finding the stone. Plus, that stone sounds fine. It should be gorgeous like everyone has said.
