Hey Folks,

I just put a deposit on a 1.71 carat G/VVS1 asscher, GIA certified. I was curious if anyone had any input on the price I plan to pay of $13100 (for the stone only. I''m getting a cheap setting and plan on letting her pick out a new one later). Good deal, bad deal, fair deal? I live in NYC and have been spending a lot of time down on 47th street, and purchased from a store there after looking at many diamonds. The specs are as follows:

Measurements- 7.04 x 7.01 x 4.41 mm
Depth- 63%
Table- 66%
Girdle- Medium to slightly thick
Culet- None
Polish- Excellent
Symmetry- Good
Flourescence- None

Given its depth, it''s a fairly wide stone compared to most I looked at, some of which had plumper bellies and smaller tables. All in all the stone looks great.

Any advice/opinions from you asscher pros? By the way thanks for all the help, I''ve been a silent observer for some time now.

price seems good.

The numbers are so-so but if it looks good to you thats more important than the numbers.

Thanks Strmrdr. Where would you suggest the numbers best fall, smaller table and larger depth? I''ve read varying opinions on asscher cuts. I generally see suggested proportions of 62-69% depth and 59-68% table. I had liked another higher crowned asscher but it was VS2, with a noticable spot in it.

Oh, and that other asscher was a 1.84 G/VS2, 66% depth, 66% table. Price on that was 13,700.

Id feel better about it if the numbers were reversed on this one 63 table and 66 depth.
even 63 is a little large.

If the pattern looks good to you and you like the performance then its the right diamond for you.

does it have the 10 mile deep look?

As iv learned more some of my preferences have changed a little but that thread covers most of it.

If you love it that''s all that matters. We haven''t seen it and you have. Numbers for us on asschers are just a guide line. We need pics in order to give you our best advice. Storm knows these stones inside and out, I always listen to what he says. Me, I have tried very hard to get a handle on them and am still learning. They are a tough stone, much harder than all the rest, IMHO.

How are you going to set it???

I see what you''re saying. My stone doesn''t look quite that deep. I actually do prefer a smaller table. I went with this stone b/c it looked larger than anything I had seen for the money, but it still had nice cut corners, nice windmill and decent stepping. I put the deposit on my American Express card today. I could always cancel payment if you think I can get a better stone for the money. Now I''m debating. Maybe I should give up some size for a bit better cut.
