You may find both local and distant appraisers who can give you the information you need. Look in the Yellow Pages under Appraisers and see what is available to you. Be aware, that some retail jewelers offer an appraisal service but have a hard time appraising anything that you purchased from a competitor. Either they prefer to not get involved or they may tell you something to make you wish you had purchased the diamond from their store and not someone else. Many retailers won't do such things, but some do.

You can buy separate coverage on jewelry from place like Jewelers Mutual Ins. Co. and Chubb, but most folks insure their items along with their homeowners or renters policy. Contact an Independent Insurance Agent if you don't know much about it. You can ask friends what agent they use as a resource. It isn't a big deal, but just one more of life's complexities.

Dave offers really great advice here (and he''s one of the good guys you can work with at a distance).

Also, see here, (top right under resources), for other advice about appraisers.

I don''t mean to take over the thread, but do you know if Chubb or JM requires you to meet a certain value of your jewelry? The Chubb agents I''ve contacted would only insure me if my ring was worth X number of dollars, which being a modest .78ct, it certainly did not.

I was just curious if that was the prerogative of the individual agent or if that was a Chubb-wide policy.

LS,

From reading here, nothing standardized seems to apply with Chubb, and with no apology on their part, thank you very much.

RockDoc did reference an encouraging post recently, referencing a provider even ostensibly better than Dave Stone had been, since he''s supposed to service all states (Dave only handled about 20).

Why don''t you let us know what you learn?

Hope you''ve been well.

Regards,

We looked in the yellow pages in our area. We went to an independant appraiser. He was very nice and allowed us to stay and wait (we didn''t). He put the ring under the loop and wanted us to understand "our" diamond so that we can recoginize its characteristics and the importance of this. After he was done we were given a two page report with a diamond chart, photos...we put it under our home owners as a SEPERATE policy. Mysterious loss and damage is covered so they cannot deny any claim. I am not sure how much it costs per year my FI pays for it. I believe it is $X per $1,000. Hope this helps!
