You may find both local and distant appraisers who can give you the information you need. Look in the Yellow Pages under Appraisers and see what is available to you. Be aware, that some retail jewelers offer an appraisal service but have a hard time appraising anything that you purchased from a competitor. Either they prefer to not get involved or they may tell you something to make you wish you had purchased the diamond from their store and not someone else. Many retailers won''t do such things, but some do.
You can buy separate coverage on jewelry from place like Jewelers Mutual Ins. Co. and Chubb, but most folks insure their items along with their homeowners or renters policy. Contact an Independent Insurance Agent if you don''t know much about it. You can ask friend what agent they use as a resource. It isn''t a big deal, but just one more of life''s complexities.

I don''t mean to take over the thread, but do you know if Chubb or JM requires you to meet a certain value of your jewelry? The Chubb agents I''ve contacted would only insure me if my ring was worth X number of dollars, which being a modest .78ct, it certainly did not.I was just curious if that was the prerogative of the individual agent or if that was a Chubb-wide policy.![]()
