Hi,

I'm relatively new to this and am looking at purchasing a diamond ring. I've been a bit of a lurker on these forums, trying to digest as much information as I can (I've only now registered). I'm looking at proposing in the next few months and was looking at purchasing a round diamond just over a carat. I would prefer F colour, a VS2 Clarity, and an excellent cut (As this is what I've gathered is the most important thing to get the glimmer). I'm now trying to hone down on a few stones and am currently looking at one for just over $6,000, I have a budget a bit over this, and I'm prepared to spend more if it would be worthwhile in securing a significantly nicer stone. It is not the exact colour and clarity that I am after but I'm mainly interested in if I have the cut assessment down. Have I picked a good cut? Also there is a small feather in the middle, so I'm not sure if this is visible (I'm buying online); the person I have been contacting says it is eye clean.

This has been certified by the AGS:

Price: $6427
Shape: Round
6.48-6.53 x 3.94
Table: 57.3%
Depth: 60.7%
Crown: 14.7%, 34.5 degrees
Pavilion: 42.9%, 40.7 degrees
Cut: AGS Ideal
Colour: E
Clarity: SI1
Carat: 1.016 (Just over 1 carat is perfect)
Feather in middle (not sure if visible to the eye)

What do you guys think?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Welcome to PS!!! Do you know if the stone is eye clean?

This is how it did on the HCA; you want the stone to perform btw 0-2 and weed out the stones that don''t score between 0-2. https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

Factor Grade
Light Return Excellent
Fire Excellent
Scintillation Excellent
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 1 - Excellent
within TIC range

looks good. a feather on a VS2 should be nothing to worry about. you can take it to an independent appraiser if it bothers you.

Welcome Kingfish!

The diamond looks great, no need to worry with a VS2 feather in that size diamond - just check it is eyeclean to your standards, I would be fairly confident it will be.

Is it a SI1 or VS2? If it is a VS2 I wouldn't worry but if it is an SI1 just check that it is eye clean like Lorelei said.

I''m glad that this is a good cut, however I think I am not going to purchase the diamond (I guess the search is just beginning!), because it is a SI1 with a feather and I''m not sure that it is eye clean. I think I would be better off going for a VS2 and dropping the colour from an E to a F.

Also, it seems that I didn''t get an excellent diameter for weight, is there anything that I should be looking for to optimise this measure?

On the contrary, it''s dead on.

Only shallower diamonds get EX for spread on the HCA, and the HCA''s use is limited with an AGS0 cut grade diamond, it is used to eliminate diamonds, not select them, so I wouldn''t worry. Also you could certainly check if the SI diamond is eyeclean despite the feather, it might be.
