Hi all :)

I pretty much know nothing about diamonds, aside from what I''ve googled over the past couple of months. I know enough to stick with the G-H colour range, and the VS1-VS2 range generally. I''ve found a diamond my girlfriend would like (she told me the size (0.75 or thereabouts), and I did the detective work. I was just hoping I could get a bit of validation from you guys to see if I''ve made an OK choice?

Here''s the stone: http://www.uniondiamond.com/diamonds/diamonds.php?mod=search&search_type_id=2&action_type_id=2&item_id=AA541933

That''s pretty much the amount of cash we''re looking to pay, and the stone is an ''ideal cut'', with Excellent polish and symmetry, which obviously all sounds great to me, but I just want to make sure :) It does have a Strong Blue fluorescence, which I''m not too sure about (I have googled and read up on it though, and apparently it''s not such a bad thing).

Anyway, hope you don''t mind helping me out :)

Thanks,

Simon

Well this is how it performed on the HCA

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Good
Scintillation Fair
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 4.2 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

You can read about the cut advisor here http://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

If you want to find the best cut stone use this tool to seach and select excellent excellent for cut http://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx

eta: I like this stone if you don't mind suggestions http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/2805/ or this one http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-636730.htm

Not overly wild about the stone. It is a 60/60 stone and they can be pretty, although the girdle is a wider variation than I would like to see on a GIA report (AGS reports peaks and valleys differently so I don''t mind wider variations on them). Is the VS clarity important to you, or is it okay as long as it is eyeclean? I also don''t believe that Union Diamond has started doing Idealscopes yet so it makes it more difficult to buy over the internet sight unseen.

I will make a few suggestions presuming that you are ok if it is eyeclean and do not require the VS clarity...

This one is probably eyeclean. You would need to ask. If not eyeclean, it definitely looks like it is ''prongable'' meaning you could place a prong over the inclusion and no one would be the wiser...
$2330 PS price
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131&item=860773

This one has an AGS report with a cut grade of 0 for light performance so if eyeclean would be a good bet.
$2230 PS price

This one also looks nice - looks like it is eyeclean on the 40X mag
$2173 PS price

Or this WF ACA - need to ask about eyecleanliness
$2382 PS price
http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-636726.htm

OR if eyeclean (need to ask on this one) and you want a little bigger, (0.84)
this one is AGS cut grade 0, and an Idealscope is on JA site.
$2350 PS price

That''s great, thanks guys :) I''m happy as long as it''s eyeclean, yep :) I notice the first two links are both colour grade I, is that going to be noticeable to the untrained eye?

I used the sift link, and this one looks ok: http://www.niceice.com/certcopies2007/ags0008556503/index.htm but again, I could be totally wrong :D What do you reckon (while I look through the other suggestions here, thanks!)

Thanks :) I got a reply saying: "am happy to report that is a perfectly eyeclean and spectacular SI selection", but then I suppose they would say that :D

Anyway, so you think I''m ok to go ahead with that one? As long as it looks ''clean'' to the naked eye, and has the blingy sparkle (which it should as it''s a H&A), I''ll be happy :)

No they wouldn''t actuallly. WF would email you and say, "No, I''m sorry this stone isn''t eyeclean, the inclusion is visible...."

They are very reputable.

I ditto Gypsy. I''ve contacted WF to see if a stone was eyeclean, and they have replied with at certain angles they can see inclusions and even advised that a stone had reflecting inclusions. They are very honest, so if they say it''s a really clean stone I''d trust them.

Ah, that''s great :D Thanks Gypsy :) I actually noticed they sent me a reply earlier that I missed with lots more information. They do seem very thorough, so that''s good to know (I''m in Australia, so it''s always a worry buying something sight unseen from another country ;) )

Thanks very much for everyones help :)

Hi simonk83! I just wanted to chime in and add that I am also an Aussie

, and I purchased from WF. They are fantastic, hands down best service ever! If you have any questions about ordering from US and shipping here, just post them, I am happy to answer them. Just wanted to check if you are aware of the taxes when you ship to Aust? They can be a bit of a suprise! For my ering, it was roughly 15% of the total price. I can give you numbers etc if you need.

Good luck!! You won''t be disappointed with Whiteflash!!

You can trust WF completely. They are 100% honest. They tell you if it is or is not eyeclean. That ACA from them looks AWESOME! It''s showing sold........did you buy it?

Hi Simon, ditto waht others said about WF and their rep - this is one place that won''t just tell you a stone is eyeclean if it really isn''t.
I , like Honey22, am also an Aussie currently getting my diamonds101 through PS, and am ordering from GOG. You can''t go wrong with either GOG or WF.
As Honey mentioned, do check out what kinda duties/taxes you will need to pay-they''re kinda steep, but its still more favourable than buying within Oz!
What city are you from?

Hi guys :) Yes, I did end up buying it, yay :D I thought there would probably be duties involved with getting it shipped over, so I guess I''ll be in for a nasty phone call from customs or whoever in a few days :) It cost me $2700 AUD pretty much, so if they charge 15% customs, that''s an extra $400 :\ Ouch!

How does paying that work? Do I just get a call from Customs when they receive it or something, and I have to forward them the payment somehow? Do they ever slip through without being ''caught'' by customs :D

Oh and you''re right, WF were very professional about the whole process, very impressed :)

And I''m in Melbourne by the way ;)

I understand the ouch! I was up for $950!!! That hurt!!

As for customs payment, I got a call from Fedex to say the box was held up in customs clearance. In order to have it cleared, I needed to fax Fedex a copy of my invoice (I actually used the order confirmation I was emailed). They then organised to have the package cleared by customs which took another two days. Then, I got a call requesting payment of the taxes etc before they would release the package, so you definately won't slip through the net so to speak. Any package entering Australia with a declared value of $1000 needs to be declared to customs and cleared, and they won't let that happen without payment. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

So, I think my package was due to be picked up on Monday, and I couldn't get it until Tuesday afternoon (pickup from Laverton/Derrimut). This was quicker as I rang them first thing Monday morning to see how the delivery is going. It was only when I checked on the status did we realise it would be held up, so if you are keen to get your hands on it asap, I would call them the day after it is shipped from the states to see how it's going. You can get the shipment number from Fedex (if you provide lots of detailed info about the delivery) and then you can track it online, but it takes a while to update the status. If I had wanted delivery to my home or business, I would have had to wait another business day, but I chose to pick it up as the Derrimut station is literally 5 minutes from my house.

Hope it all goes well!!!

Ok, thanks for that Honey22 :) We''re not really in a huge rush, so I guess I''ll just wait for the phone call :D

Actually, while I have your attention, are you able to recommend anywhere in Melbourne to go to get a band and the diamond set in it? We want a white gold band, but something really simple (just a thin, round band, no frills as we think it looks more classy this way :D).

Thanks!

A few of us have done what you have and bought the sstone in the uSA. I had Garry Holloway of Precious Metals set my stone and make my diamond wedding ring here is a picture of the finished set. His stores are in Canterbury and Brighton
