Hello

A question on cut since im realizing how important it is. Does H & A blow away an ideal cut stone or is it a little better?

Also, for anyone who know EGL, would you consider a EGL H SI2 probably a AGS J I1 or I2??

Im thinking of choosing my stone by this method if Ideal is almost as good as H & A. Im going to search for an H Si1 or Si2 stone in the 1.8 carat range with ideal cut. I slowly begin to narrow my search by using the HCA calc to make sure everything looks good. Ill then call the vendor and ask if its eye clean. I dont want to be able to see the flaws with the naked eye or at least no black dirt specs in the diamond. What do you all think of this plan? any suggestions

Hi there -- I think with your budget you could get really close to 1.8 with a terrificly cut AGS or GIA stone if you're willing to go a smidge lower in color (which with a great cut will face up really white). Here are a couple of examples:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4014/ -- J/VS2 $11,521.72

http://www.jamesallen.com/grading_report.asp?pic=1135685&type=2 -- J/VS2 $10,690

http://www.jamesallen.com/grading_report.asp?pic=1126128&type=2 -- J/SI1 $10,790

http://www.jamesallen.com/grading_report.asp?pic=1107928&type=2-- I/SI1 $12,090

http://www.jamesallen.com/grading_report.asp?pic=1131268&type=2 -- I/SI1 $11,490

http://www.jamesallen.com/grading_report.asp?pic=1131268&type=2 -- I/SI1 $11,390

Of all of these (and this is just my opinion) I would scoop up the GOG J/VS -- puts you just a hair below your carat weight size and has a rockin' hearts and arrows pattern. Anywhoo, good luck and let us know what you decide!

Edited to add: OR you could just call one of the great pricescope vendors (like GOG, Whiteflash, ERD, NiceIce etc . . .) and give them your parameters and they can help you find an awesome stone . . .

If an EGL H SI2 is selling for the same price as an AGS or GIA J I1, (and they''re both the same cut quality) then it probably is something like a J I1 by AGS/GIA standards.

Difficult to make assumptions without knowing which branch of EGL - EGL USA are said to be the strongest lab, EGL Israel, Turkey, Europe and some others are thought by some experts to be less accurate, so knowing which lab can be important when comparing. A well cut hearts and arrows stone can look as lovely as a top make diamond, it depends on the proportions etc as to the light return. Also some well cut diamonds may show an arrow pattern but might not be a true hearts and arrows cut. So I take it you prefer to choose an EGL graded diamond?
