So Wednesday I heard that a well known watch shop in our area that has 85 stores nationwide was looking for an experianced head sales associate.I e-mailed the company a resume and a list of the 40 watches ive sold over the last 25 years.About two hours later I recieved a call to interview for either a sales or management position.I was excited because the management accepted my Sundays off expectation. The interview and conversation went well until the manager said they would like to hire me full time...at $6.50 an hour and approximatly $200/ month commission...I was shocked...what major mall retailer with 85 locations offer this type of pay?I earned more per/hour 25 years ago starting out at a jewelry mall store.Should I be insulted by this type of offer, or do companies today still expect experianced sales associates and management to sell high end brand name watches and do watch repair for this type of income...I hope that the interviews i have later this week yield better offers...thanks for listening...JM.

Well...that''s just crap.

When I applied at jewelery stores in the past, they offered me that kind of pay, but I didn''t have any experience. With a management position it should be way better than that. I dunno...if the job is one you think you would like, the pay would be a smaller factor, but if money is really tight I''d hold out for something better.

Wow jewelerman...that''s a bum deal...

Your expertise alone should be worthy of way more than that....

Keep us posted and let us know what happens!!!

that is absurd. i wouldnt take it either. and if my memory serves me you have alot of experience. dont get down because of this one. and IMO they might have been so quick to call you because they have a revolving door because the pay is so poor. they dont even get why their people keep quitting im sure. keep waiting you will find one that appreciates you.

That''s crazy. Ask to speak to their district manager, you are worth way more than that. Heck back in the 90''s I was paid $15 an hour and 30% comission. They''d be lucky to get you, just at a price that is reasonable. What you were offered?? Can''t say it here.

Good luck, keep the negotiations going!!!!

Ditto! They can offer that to a student working part-time, but how ridiculous to offer that to someone older with experience!

Yep...thats what most people need...a part time college student working on their high end watch or explaining the difference between quartz, automatics, mechanicals, lever set or crown set...thats if they even know the difference between Timex and Rolex...

That is so insane ... Just consider the source and not let it reflect on you personally. Easier said then done, I would be in shock..

Usually when something like this happens, the next offer you get will make up for it..

The world has a way of balancing itself.... Positive Vibes your way...

Thanks everyone for the remarks...your support has once again been appreciated.

Wow that''s cruddy and in my opinion its disrespectful to you that they will only offer that much!

I say keep on looking until the right gig comes along. I wish you all the luck! Hopefully one of your interviews later in the week go perfectly and you will get a great job that will offer you more money.

I made that much 10 years ago working in the photo development area of a grocery store. Ridiculous. Keep looking!

Sorry that you were given that kind of offer. The minimum wage in my state, as of Feb. 2008, is higher than that. . .the highest in the country at $8.07, but still that isn''t enough to live off of! Of course $6/hour would be impossible. Possibly it''s the economy that is to play more than anything in the offer you were given, but even if so, you''re worth MUCH more.

Best of luck in your job hunt!

Thanks everyone...my last job i earned $40,000 per year and would be happy to earn that again...this amount is the average earning for an experianced jewelry person in my state(the antique jewelry backround and G.I.A. certifications only get you an interview but no more pay)
