My sister is *hopefully* going to get engaged soon. She loves antique style rings and currently lives in SF. Any suggestions on where to go to try on rings? She has no idea what size/shape she wants. I think it is important she tries some on. All she knows is she likes antique rings (real or remakes). TIA!!!

I had a dealing with this store in the past and I was happy with their pricing, quality, selection and of course the customer service:

Steve Padis
888 Brannan Street

Tacori,

How exciting for your sister!

I know that my bf and I had a great time visiting Simayof when we were in San Francisco a couple of years ago.

Don''t know whether they carry "antiquey" type settings but it''s a good place to stop off and get some diamond knowledge and check out some diamonds and fab settings.

It''s right in, or at least it used to be right in Union Square.

I''ve read many posts on Lang''s Antiques....

Never realised I always look in Lang''s front window when I go to the city to get my hair cut. It''s near Vidal Sassoon on Sutter. They have lovely things! a true understatement....

I have a suggestion but i have never been to the store in person.

Brilliant earth

It was a website that got stumbled across by chance(their located in SF). They have a really pretty antique ring in whatever stone shape you could possible want and in all metals. They would have to call to make an appointment to come in but it never hurts to look.

I have a few pieces from Old and New on Union Street. I don''t remember if they have a big selection of engagement rings, but they do have nice stuff.

Langs is great and wow do they have some lovely stuff. I''d make an appointment before going. Shreve has nice selection andits pricey... but fabulous for browsing as they have lovely asschers, cushions, rounds, EC''s loose and set. If she''s just looking to see what works for her, I highly suggest going there.

Thanks everyone!!!

tacori, the best place that i can think of for someone to go and "shop around" is the SF jewelry center, most of the time called the gift center by locals.

San Francisco Jewelry Center
101 Utah St
San Francisco, CA 94103
Phone: (415) 552-5272

that place has a gazillion stores so she can window shop, try on rings, oogle at all sorts of jewelry and get a feel for what she likes.

i''ve had many friends buy their e-ring/w-bands from there and all are very happy customers. i''m planning to visit the gift center next week to check out a bag/round diamond band.

their prices are very flexible since you can haggle with the vendors. all of them are wholesalers, so the prices are very nice!

oh, but make sure she calls to make an appointment otherwise they won''t let her in.

Dianne''s Estate has a lot of nice rings that are antique. However, prices are very high!

There is one store in San Francisco, and one in Disneyland :)

What about Van Craeynest?

They have some of the most beautiful settings I have seen.

I live in San Francisco too. Lang is a must see, but I also like Dianes Old and New in the Marina which is accross town. If your going to Langs Antiques check out Shreve & Co which is like a block away and has some great eye candy (it''s a huge store, I love the place) . Also in the same part of area there is a Derco in the big Mall on Powell and Market, and a place called Zwilliger. Shreve, Zwilliger and Derco aren''t antique jewelry but worth checking out too.

Your right Van Craeynest is here in the city too.

how exciting for her tacori :)!

here are my recs --
1) langs - if she is going on the weekend, yes i agree with gypsy that it is better to make an appt but she doesn't really have to have one. she can also just browse the website and bring in the item numbers when she goes in.

2) innerkitten and gypsy mentioned shreve - they also have some estate jewelry, you just have to ask them to see it. it is close to langs.

3)another place also in that one block radius of union square is

Gus Farber Dan Tenenbaum Appraisers & Buyers
210 Post Street (between Grant Ave & Stockton St)
Suite 1021
San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 781-1144
- smaller place and never know what they will have

4) dianne's old and new estates - in the marina

that's all in SF that i could think of for antique style

i had not heard of Van Craeynest until after i got my ering so nver make it over there. derco is good for trying on styles but i found them to be too highly priced for what you get.

if she can make it to LA at all then there is singlestone of course
