Hi All,

I recently chose my setting and diamond for my ering, and today found the exact one for sale on ebay for about half the price. Same carat, same specifications, same designer setting, etc. The seller even includes the diamon GIA report number.

What''s the best way to make sure I get what I pay for? Is there a way to have it appraised and be able to return it to her if it''s not real? Is it true that designer settings cannot be copied by custom jewelers?

What are your opinions? We are on a budget and could only spend about $2500 total on ring and diamond, and buying it like this will assure we can get what we want!

Buying on ebay totally depends on who you are buying from. If you are interested in second hand designer pieces, I''d watch the Tiffany and Cartier pages at Signed Pieces. They also sell on ebay, but everything is on their site, too. You just have to be super careful about ebay. It''s probably a good idea to only buy from those with close to 100% feedback and a well-stated return policy.

Buying jewelry on ebay is NOT a sure thing at all. You are taking a big risk. Searching above for ''ebay'' will bring up many horror stories.

Be careful. Ebay is flooded with clarity enhanced diamonds and misgraded diamond reports from unrecognized labs.

Due diligence is always the proper approach.

Is it the same GIA report # too?
Are you buying this ring from a bricks and mortar store?

^^^ If that is the case, you better call your jeweler.

I agree with what the others have said, buying off ebay can be scary, especially diamonds.

as a long time ebayer and short term engagement ring hunter - you *can* and will (eventually) get ripped off on ebay. The only real opportunity for a deal in a high dollar range is to use escrow. Forget paypal "buyer safety". It''s a complete farce. Seller can close their paypal account and cancel credit cards, leaving you holding the bag and fighting with your credit card company on a chargeback - for which you signed in the PP user agreement not to do.

There is one escrow service that costs a flat $26 for a transaction of any value (compared to ebay''s 5%). The ebayer''s are gaga over it. I can''t think of the name right now. Also - fugged about the online jewlers on ebay. Why bother? You know the bling with good prices is gonna be crappy cuts. If you really want to use an ebay hosted retailer - go to their websites directly and do an "off ebay" transaction and get that 6% put into your pocket instead of ebay''s. Ebay will offer you no protection whatsoever. I haven''t seen a deal yet on any bling with a GIA cert, other than from an individual seller.

I shop EBAY as well for many things........but EBAY is not much help when things go bad. Paypal is not much use either!!!

Be smart and buy from a trusted PS vendor. Dont compromise

Ditto to that! I would stick with trusted PS vendors for a purchase like a diamond ring. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!
