Jeweller Not Happy With Me?

Hello PSers

So i have been communicating with one specific jeweller about setting a diamond. He confirmed with me the setting that I chose, and then asked me about the type of metal i want to use. Fine.

I was under the impression that since I had not given him the diamond yet, that he knew i was still mulling things over and making sure i was completely happy with my decision.

He called me on the phone today in response to my email about the setting, and when I told him that I would be dropping the diamond soon, he came back with " YES, PLEASE so we can start making your ring"... And the impression i got from his tone was that he had already started making the ring, and was just waiting for my diamond to be set? Was there a verbal agreement made here? Do all jewellers do this?

I feel awful that I have left such a long lag time between me deciding which setting I would like him to make, and actually giving him the diamond for the ring

Did I do the wrong thing here by my jeweller?

Unless you put down a deposit or signed a work order he has no reason to assume anything. In this economy many jewlers are really anxious for business.

I am not clear from your post, have you actually committed to buying this ring (in the form
of a down payment and work order/contract?).

If not, he shouldn''t be starting on the ring.

Actually, scrap that - I''m not sure why he is starting on the ring without having
the diamond in hand anyway, really..

If you can clear those points up, perhaps we can answer your Q better?

Nope I didn't sign anything and have not paid him yet.

ETA: Our communcation regarding the setting so far has only been through email and phone calls.

Well, I think you just need to communicate a lil better/more in that case.
From your quote he said "...so we can start making your ring".

I''m not sure from your post, what exactly made you think he had actually started?
Without a deposit etc, I seriously doubt he would have.

In that case, you have no issues imho.

And I don''t see how you could have done anything wrong - you can change
your mind and take as long as you like about your diamond (within reason).
As long as you''re not taking up the jeweller''s time without planning on following through, which doesn''t sound like you are

But honestly, I think it''s time to just go in there and have a chat, get things straight.
The last thing you want embarking on a custom e-ring is strain on either side, yanno?
And you should make sure you have a written work order, as mentioned.

I have never done this before so i didn''t even know that i have to sign a work order. I thought i just drop the diamond in, pay them, get a receipt and they will ring me when the job is finished?

Maybe i''m just too sensitive or something and picked up a negative vibe that wasn''t there :p

The ring is not custom, its a simple cast setting. I''m thinking he *might* have done the casting and just waiting for me to set the diamond?

The ring is not custom, its a simple cast setting. I''m thinking he *might* have done the casting and just waiting for me to set the diamond?

oh sorry, for some reason I read it as you were having a custom style made, my mistake.
Even so, it would be unwise for your jeweller to have the ring cast without at least the exact dimensions of your diamond for the head, if not the real thing in hand, kwim?

If not a work order, I would make sure you get *something* in writing about the exact style name (or it''s number/code), what metal and kt you are paying for, what ring size etc, any details you special requested (if any), and what size/mm/shape diamond it is to accommodate.
Plus of course whatever warranty/return policy/guarantee/store maintenance/cleaning etc that you may have discussed as part of the deal.

I know you''re in Perth, and I know how inept the jewellers often are here - so it never hurts to be careful and get things in writing imho!

Also, I''m sorry if I''m opening a can of worms here, but it sounds as if you are buying the diamond from a different place than is making the setting?
Just because.. if this is the case - the store has no responsibility if they somehow damage your diamond during setting.

Like I said, I hate to worry you for nothing - but many folks aren''t aware of this, and I feel a duty to mention it.

Beechezz, its just a simple solitaire setting with the corners claw...Sorry if that isn''t up to your fabulous-tastic style (or mine) but funds are low (with the wedding and house) and I just want to give my baby a good home
