Has anyone had good experiences with any particular jeweler in the Dallas/Ft Worth area?

-Richard

Hi! What are you looking for? I had my setting done through Jared''s in Plano and i''ve been very happy. They''ve been great to work with! You can purchase your stone on the internet and have them mount it. They also carry designer settings like A.Jaffe and Tacori.

What am I looking for? That is a very good question to which I wish I had a good answer. I think I have found a setting that I like from a company called coastdiamond. I went to visit the closest authorized dealer, but they have really tried to pressure me into buying a diamond from them that is significantly more expensive than ones I see online (I posted on that before.) So, I guess I''m looking for someone who would work with me to get the setting I want (either order it or custom design something similar) with a diamond I want (even if not through them). Btw, I stopped into Jareds in FW and didn''t see any settings that I liked and when I asked about custom worked they offered to "combine" two pre existing settings (ignoring the fact that I had indicated that neither setting had the precise features I was looking for).

That''s a bit odd because when they did not get a response from the designer they assured me that their jeweler can easily design the same ring and make any changes i want. They had some pretty designer settings already so we didn''t have to go that route. What kind of setting are you looking for?

Also, they were great about me getting the stone from an alternate source (infact the salesperson was the first to mention that it''s perfectly safe to buy on the net and that''s how i started my search). But then again it''s just pure luck to find a nice salesperson to work with. Do you like any of the designer settings? I found that the price was more reasonable compared to custom work as i had gotten a couple of quotes.

Jared''s is a chain, but each store is pretty different.

There is a place in the World Trade Center in Dallas (off I-35) called Mariloff. They are diamond dealers. They have their own cutting lab in Israel, and are VERY knowledgable. The store is owned by three brothers. One brother runs operations in Israel, one brother runs their sister store in NYC, and one brother runs the store here. They don''t advertise at all, just rely on word of mouth. I heard of them through a friend who got her ering from them.

The World Trade Center is closed to the public. However, you can still get in if you have an "appointment" with them. To get an appointment, just show up! There is a booth right next to the elevators. You can ask whoever is sitting at the booth to call up to Mariloff and ask them to send a sales associate for you. Give them about 2-3 minutes, and you''ll have an appointment.

My now husband and I looked at probably 20 stones (that''s not an exageration) before we made our final selection. We had shopped at a TON of places and just weren''t happy. We ended up buying a very nice stone (2.5 carat, H, VVS1, triple Ideal) for about $7,000 less than any competitor we talked to. And it was cool because they had stones of all sizes, shapes, cuts, clarity, color - whatever! We looked at lots of different options before deciding what was important to us and choosing the final stone.

They have settings in stock, or they can make one for you.

The only problem I have with them is their hours. Since they''re in the World Trade Center, they have "standard" business hours and aren''t open on the weekends. But you can look them up (Google Mariloff and find their website) and call them. They were very flexible when I made my purchase - they set an after hours appointment with me, and we ended up staying until almost 9

Avantika,

This is about what I was looking for only I was thinking it would be nice with a larger center stone. I like the rounded pave rather than the straight edge that the sales person was trying to sell me. I suppose as with anything there is definately some luck of the draw.

Bikergirl,

Thanks for the info. It sounds very interesting if just a bit strange. I understand the normal business hours bit, but needing an "appt" seems a bit much. Seems like worth seeing even if I dont end up purchasing from them.

The appointment thing is just because they''re located in the World Trade Center. By definition, you have to be a supplier to do business there. Mariloff is the only company in the entire building who will even talk to you if you''re not a vendor of some sort. I think they even have some sort of clause in their lease allowing them to sell to the general public. That''s why you have to have a salesperson come down to get you - the only other way into the building is to have a supplier or vendor pass. Yes, it''s a bit strange, but it seems to work for them. The reason for an after-hours appointment - the building itself closes at either 5

0 or 5:30. If someone doesn''t know you''re coming, there is no way you''ll even get in the front door.

The link you posted is awesome! I love pave'' and I really like half-moon sides like that! You have awesome taste!

I actually came across Mariloff today when they set up a display booth at my employer. I spoke with one of their reps for quite a while and I was impressed by his knowledge and demeanor. He explained the building access to me and as descriped above, the ''appointment'' is merely to get you past the doorman. They are open until 5 but told me they would stay later if you called in advance and requested it. The pieces they had on display here were very nice and they had some unusual styles that I haven''t seen other places. He claims that since they are mainly a wholesale operation, they keep a very large # of stones in stock. I am looking for an oval (tough to find a good selection) so I plan on going down to visit them next week.

I am also looking for oval and am looking in the dallas, plano area. Just wanted to know how your visit went

I''ve used Village Jeweler''s Boutique in Southlake. Very happy, ask for Elliot or Sharon--
