okay, it isn''t a long story.

i met a jeweler. he mentioned that someone lost all his moeny in a foreign country. the only valuable on him was a gold pendant which turned out to be a life saver. he bartered it to make his way back home.

has anyone heard of a story like this?

Plenty of stories like that hapen every single day...

While there are lots of stories like that - you need to keep in mind that usually the jewelry is sold at a deep discount from new.

That being said; the concept of transporting your wealth in basic jewelry and gems is rather common in certain parts of the world or when hyperinflation starts to hit a country. Convert everything into gold, silver, good gemstones. At least you will be able to sell them for something elsewhere (whereas the money will be worthless). There are a number of people who left Germany and other parts of Europe in WW II who coverted to gold and jewels, and then sold them once in the US in order to start over.

This is also why pirates like to rob people fleeing areas in the world: they are steeling the gold and gems.

that reminds me of a movie called "the marathon man" with dustin hoffman.

but lead and brass and copper are worth more and with enough of em ya dont have to run far.
