I stopped in to talk to a local jewelery store the other day (I thought it was a new place, but he said he''d been there for 7 years). I looked at the stuff he had, and decided to get my ring cleaned.

I handed it to him, and he felt its heft in his hand and looked at it for a sec, and said "wow, that''s a nice platinum mount you have". Only its not, its 14k. I''m no expert, and I''ve never compared platinum to gold before side-by-side, but really? Shouldn''t a jeweler be able to tell at a first glance?

Now, granted, the ring is heavy, its a Tension Setting (Gelin Abaci tr-182 - https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/tr-182-tension-ring-photos.119609/) and it IS heavy, but still. He was the OWNER of a JEWELRY STORE.

Tension set rings tend to be quite heavy and if he was not thinking about that element, it could feel as heavy as a standard platinum ring. No doubt, a platinum ring would be a lot heavier yet. Probably he was just making casual conversation to engage you, but that is what happens when an "expert" gives an off-hand comment or an overly casual opinion. I wouldn''t be at all concerned.

I own platinum and white gold jewelry and I can''t tell them apart, so I''m not really that surprised!
