I totally forgot how to make one. And I remember that I screwed it up once and I can''t screw this one up because it''s for my daughter''s birthday. It used to be her favorite cake.

I hope someone can help me with my problems:

1. They don''t sell the 3 oz packages of regular jello anymore (only sugar free) so I had to get a 6 oz. I guess I will measure the dry stuff and split it so that shouldn''t be a problem, but I forgot if you reduce the water or add to it...and how long to sit before you pour into the poked holes.

2. We have to make the top look like a football field, but I refuse to do frosting because she must have whipped cream or it won''t be the same. I bought the extra creamy cool whip hoping it was thicker and gel food coloring. Will that work? Or will it get all runny and jacked up?

3. Has anyone everyone decorated on top of whipped cream with some regular frosting? How''d that work for you? I need to make white lines like a football field on top of the green whipped cream. We will stick her on the 29 yard line.

Thanks for indulging my neurosis....

I have no idea what a poke cake is, but if your keep the cool-whip cool, it should work. For the decorating there''s this gel decorator stuff that should work well and comes in blue/red/green. It''s packaged in little opaque tubes.

How sweet!

Oh, thank god they had a recipe in there that I could use with the large box of Jello. I hope it turns out and doesn''t become one big mosh pit.

Thanks Maggie!!!

Meroledi, I did buy the gel food coloring so I hope it works. I just don''t think I should even try to frost it until halftime tommorow.

I don''t think it''s going to be enough cake though.

I''ll bring some other apple tart treat so nobody feels left out if they miss any cake.

What the F is Jello poke cake?!

Anyway, sounds like you got a recipe (which I already looked at, btw, I just felt like being an @$$ because I''d never heard of it before) so what other questions do you have?

And what kind of cake mix and jello are you going to use?!

Please post pics when you''re done!

Hahaha Freke, you never had a poke cake? Shameful....

I am using classic white cake and strawberry banana Jello. I used to cut up fresh strawberries and banana to place on top of the whipped cream, but I can''t do that this time.

I still haven''t figured out how I am going to make this cake look like a football field with whipped cream and frosting squeezed through a bag to make the 10 yard lines. I don''t think I should attempt to frost it until half time, but then she will know as soon as I put the cake in the fridge what kind it is. She hasn''t had it in a very long time. Neither have I and I am already jonsing for a piece.

She just called a few hours ago. She fell at the bottom of the stairs again. She was crying and that girl never cries from pain. I think she is really scared because she is in a HUGE black tie wedding next Saturday in Vegas and last time she did this she couldn''t walk. So comfort cake at her Charger Game party will be just what the healing goddess would order. I don''t know what it is about that last stair at her place. Last time she was carrying a box and just missed it...this time she was holding two bags, probably searching for her keys. I hate to be the Mommy, but there is a reason I am a "Safety Manager". Watch where you are walking!!!!

Sarah, I may take a picture, but this cake is definately not for show. Her husband wanted me to get the Costco cake that was already done up like a football field, but everyone is sick of Costco cake and their thick buttercream frosting. Ugh! I will take a better tasting cake over pretty any day. It''s nice though when it''s both.

I''ll save that for her 30th. We are going low economy right now. Heck, the food and mimosa stuff has already cost us $200 and it''s supposed to be a small group potluck...wth??

Weird, I was picturing tubes of jello running through the cake, as though you poked it with your finger and magically made the jello solidify in the hole.

I hope your daughter didn''t hurt herself! Happy birthday to her!

Oh my goodness I love jello poke cake! I haven''t had any since I was probably 10 but I remember loving the strawberry kind my mom used to make delicious! I just might make some this week!!

It''s been a long day. Did you get it made? Or when are you making it for? I need to bury my head in the sand for a week...

Ahhhh....... Jello Poke Cake! The best memories of the grade school cafeteria. I''d pay you a hundred to make one for me!!!!

Miracles.... I think I remembered a spray paint-like can of frosting and it came in green. It's like a mist so you can just spray it on top of the whipped cream and then pipe white whipped cream for the yard lines

Or wait, why not just mix some green food coloring in the whipped cream?

ETA oh yeah I just saw that you were thinking of doing that. Maybe do a test with a small amount of whipped cream?

E (again) TA- Oh duh I see that you've probably already made the cake... I need to read better before posting!

Hahaha, you ladies crack me up!! Thank goodness some of you knew kind of cake I was talking about.

I decided against the green whipped cream idea and the lines on the cake. We just slapped the whipped cream on the cake, put the LT (Charger running back) action figure on, the number 29 candles and a Charger bolt. Then we all ate it. I sliced some strawberries and banana to place on top of each piece. It was yummmmmmmmmmmy!!

mercoledi: Your description is sort of what one does to make poke cake. In my case, I couldn''t find a straw, so I used my knife sharpener to stab the holes into the cake. Then you just take the jello and spoon it into the holes to saturate each one and then pour the rest of the liquid jello over the whole cake and refrigerate.

It is so yummy because the jello mixture seeps into the cake making it super moist and flavorful and the whipped cream ensures you get a nice refreshing piece of cake. It''s pretty too. It''s a great cake for summer. Dang, now I wish I had a piece leftover to eat right now.
