I think unfortunately there are too many people on power trips who have access to them and use them a bit too freely. A middle aged woman just got tasered here at a football game because she asked why she had to move out of the aisle at a football game. She wasn''t even belligerent!

I think the use of tasers have been abused, and this story is just one of many examples....but.....it is believed (haven''t seen any data) that tasers are safer than guns, batons, and pepper spray. If anyone has an info to disprove that, feel free to post it. It would also be interesting to hear how many volts are used.

That''s insane, too! And I completely agree about the power trips. I know that many cops really want to help people, protect the public, etc., (I met several nice cops when I used to work security at my school), but a lot of them are also on power trips! (I met tons of these, too...more than the nice cops, sadly.)
