hey guys. I have been shopping around for a

Weight: 1.00-1.30
Color: F
Clarity: VS1
Pol/Sym: EX/EX
Cut: Ideal

engagement ring. I''ve looked at a few online retailers, GoG, BN, and WF. The loose diamonds I''ve seen from all these sites that fit my criteria are around $10k per carat. I''ve been looking at a 1.22 carat loose diamond from Jared the Galleria of Jewelry here in MA that fall in to this range as well, and the price just for the diamond is $12,700. I sat down with the sales person and went over the geometry of the diamond they are as follows

Table: 56%
Depth: 61.3
Crown Angle: 35
Pavilion Angle: 40.8
Medium Girdle at 3.0%

I''ve read in a lot of places that Jared is overpriced compared to online retailers. Is this a good deal or am I missing something? here is a link to a similar stone from BN that I am looking at also. they are very similar only difference is .08 carat and about 800 dollars difference as well.

sorry forgot to include. the cert is GIA for the 1.22
 
Can you post the GIA report number for the 1.22 stone?
 
nope, didn''t get a copy of the actual report. the listings were in their system, can''t access it from home. I will try to find it.
 
Have you thought about dropping the VS1 to VS2 or even SI1?

Your range of diamonds on the budget would greatly increase.
 
I haven''t looked at many VS2 but I did look at a few SI1 diamonds. the ones I looked at I could visually see the imperfections in the diamond. I''m not looking for anything over over 1.4-1.5 I just want a really good cut, and great light performance. the 1.22 from Jared and the 1.30 from BN are ideal sizes for me. I realize I''m paying for the F color and the VS1, from the stones I''ve looked at, even a few at tiffany''s the F and G are noticeble as are the VS1 and the SI1 at other jewelers.
 
Hey there! I have a few suggestions for you. I would check out Day''s Jewelers in NH- they have a store in Manchester. I know it will be a little bit of a drive but I think their prices are better then Jared''s and your in NH WITH NO SALES TAX!!! When you are going to drop 10k that should help out a little. And if I remember correctly the Day''s in Manchester is across the street from Jared''s anyhow so you could always check that one out too to see different stock. I think most chain stores in MA don''t check inventor of stores in NH because they don''t want people to go to the state without the sales tax

Can you post the details on the report such as depth, table, angles and so on or alternatively the number on the report so we can look it up online? Also although there are many SI which are eyeclean, if you prefer VS and high colour then stick to that.
 
Just an anecdotal response from my experiences at Jared...

Very few of the stones they have are certified by GIA or AGS. I didn''t see any loose stones there from either place, most are IGI or GSI. Of course you can get things independently appraised and you can use various tools to assess the quality of cut (like your own idealscope), but in general you can probably sit more comfortable with a more guaranteed high-quality diamond from AGS or GIA, maybe EGSL.
Jared does carry some brands that have GIA or AGS stones, but those are usually diamonds already in a setting.
If you specifically asked Jared gto get a certain stone, they might do it for you.

The other thing I''m leery about is how Jared does their customer interactions, at least with our experience there. Other stores may differ, but in the one they were in, the salespeople would keep having us compare one stone or setting to another until everything was narrowed down to one definite choice, and they pushed a sale the same day very strongly. It just wasn''t a fun experience. Hopefully you''ve had a much more positive experience there.

If just looking for loose diamonds, though, I would try either an online source with competitive prices where you can see ASET, idealscope, and other images, or a local jeweler who is knowledgeable with diamonds and can get in several stones in your general price-range that you can then compare side-to-side.
 
I really appreciate all the input from everyone, I did get a copy of the cert today from jared. they brought in the stone and cert for me to look at. the GIA report number is 1102769795. I do have to say that so far, this is the best one I have looked at. the exact dimensions are

table: 56%
crown angle: 35
pavilion angle: 40.8
depth: 61.3%
thin - medium girdle, faceted at 3.0%
no culet

the cut grade, polish, symmetry are all excellent, and no fluorescence.

I also looked at the stone compared to an AGS 0 stone they had, for the light performance it was pretty much identical.

I have considered doing going to a Jared in NH to buy the stone, including setting, I would save probably at least 800 bucks which is quite a bit. However, I am constrained by time. and again, thank you guys for all the feedback.

forgot to mention, was comparing under what they called a mini gemex thing
