ermagherd!!! My latest utility bill went is 2.75x the December bill ;(. Damn those single digit days!:wall: This is good bling money!:angryfire:

How bad is YOUR recent heat bill?

You should see our air conditioning bill......

We do average billing over the year and it's $170 per month for gas and electric. We have a new gas furnace two years ago and that helped a bunch. But when we have AC put in this Spring it will go up for sure. I am tired of sweating and window units.

Mine was so high :(sad I don't even keep the heat that high!

Dec 112.58
Jan 195.83

This is gas and electric combined for the previous month. Can't wait to see what Feb's bill is going to be. It was darn cold in NJ for the first three weeks of January.

We do average billing. $99 for gas and $117 for electric.

Sooooo I don't have heat, but there have been plenty of cold days. I just cook something in the stove:lol: and we've been eating LOTS of turkey. Cooling can depend though. My AC runs nearly 10 months out of the year. Last month the electric was $76.00. In the height of summer, June-September its about $130.00-140 ish.

But electric is cheap down here in FL.

Year round I keep my AC on 78F in the morning, 77F in the afternoon. 76 for bedtime (about 9pm on). I use ceiling fans to augment the cooling. The system here is 3.5tons and the house is CBS. the roof is white as is the house. those things help a lot.

and of course this time of year, the house is 72 degrees in the morning, barely heats up to 77 degrees until after 3pm. on those days I open the windows and let the breeze in if it gets too hot indoors.

When I lived in Massachusetts, it was ugly. Heating bill would be nearly $300 in winter. We kept it at 68f degrees but then again...massachusetts. We had solar panels on the house which helped augment us in the summer, so electric (cooling) was in the 125-130 range.

Do people really heat and air condition their houses?
OMG! Who Knew!?!

Why don't they all just move to a beach city in Southern California?

I have central AC and it really makes the house more comfortable by cutting the humidity in addition to dropping the temp. Good stuff!

Mine was $305 and we didn't have a lot of really cold weather until around Christmas. Our Christmas lights outside are all LED so they don't add a lot of money. I bet January's is going to be high because we've had a lot of cold weather this month.

The worst we ever had was almost $300 and that was for AC in an unusually hot summer month. Usually around $170 (gas/electric). Goes up to $220 or so for colder or hotter months.

We were just having this discussion earlier tonight! I said "Is this right or did we miss paying a month??!"

Over $400 :eek2:

We do have two heating units though :confused2:

I win - $539. Lest you believe I have a large house - it’s 2000 square feet.

Oh gracious! Where do you live? Alaska?? ;)2

Our house is 4700+ sqft plus an unfinished basement of around 2300 sqft (unheated). I keep the thermostats set to 70, which still feels like 68. I tell everyone to bundle up if they're too cold :mrgreen2:

Bahahahaha:lol-2::lol:
My house is 1,811 sq ft according to zillow. All electric. I went from 34 kWh in December to 101 kWh which translated to $200.81 in December and $551.08 for the current bill.

I actually texted my boys next door and they told me they drop their temp to 60 when they're at work and then bump it to 68 when home and they were $500. I'm home all day so it's a low of 63 and then 64 from 6pm-11pm

I’m just outside of Philadelphia. We had a real cold snap recently. My house is also 90 years old and our heat pump is 20. My husband and one son run cold so we keep it at 70 most of the time.

55 degrees today!

Ours due this month is $358 but that's because I kept the heat off as much as possible until around December 15th and since then it's been on 60-65 every single day.

That means in February it will probably be $600 or better :errrr:

I haven't looked yet but it probably won't be pretty. DH has been turning the temperature up to 72 during awake hours and I keep turning it down to 68. it is set to go to 66 overnight and lower when we are away. He adjusted the water heater, so hopefully that will offset a bit, though the water heater is gas.

My electric bills for coldest and the hottest months is about $350.
During the winter I set the temp at 68 and during the summer I set the temp at 78.

I'm hearing you guys.... around 300€electric and 400 € gas due to our problems with our (brand new) gas heating system... had to use electric fan heaters ... then switched to the gas system that is supposed to be eco friendly and economic. They can't figure out the fine-tuning, though. So we're at least finally warm (19°C/66 f), but using way more than we're supposed to :angryfire:.
But I am not missing the day when it was (13 c / 55f inside)... arrghh

Haha same here except I am the one who keeps it in the 70s in the house in the colder months (sometimes 78 lol) during the awake hours and even at night I set it to 71 for the kitties downstairs in case they decide to hang out there instead of their bedroom upstairs. Of course we don't keep it that high when we are all not there (part time house) so it probably won't be too bad for January. December bill gas was $111 and electric was $145 but we were only there for 12 days in December. Haven't checked January yet but I'll report back when I get that figure.

I think I win - our power bills for 3 months are well over $1000.00AUD sometimes $1200+AUD per quarter less in winter around $950AUD and our gas bills are anywhere from $300AUD to $700 for three months. The joys of living in a hot humid environment.... And our water bills are a decent amount too.

Mary Poppins, DH and I have thermostat wars. Sometimes I think it might be what does us in. :lol-2:

$600 :( to keep the house at ~63-65.

Our problem is windows. Our living room is more glass than wall - there’s a substantial amount of ceiling glass as well - and we spend most of our time there so we can’t not heat it! And even double-pane glass just can’t keep up. Curtains would be an easy solution, but one of the cats insists on going #1 on any sort of hanging material :confused2::roll2:

Our idea was basically to Reynolds wrap the windows for winter... turns out this is A Thing and they make kits! :mrgreen2:

@yssie have you considerd a roman shade instead? They can either be motorized or come with a pulley system (might not be a good option with cats!)

@PintoBean our electric bill was 3X what it was last for the same time period. Our son and DIL was here for 5 days and stayed in the basement, which has electric heat! glad I have gas heat for the rest of the house.
