Hi,

I would like to get recommendation onpurchaing J color. For those who own J color, do you find that it is to yellow.
I am thinking of getting a 3 carat J color cushion as a centre stone, and trillion for side stones. What color should I get for side stone to help the centre stone more white.

A J cushion is really going to show some color, especially in that size....
 
Actually it might depend upon how color sensitive you are and whether it is a high J--closer to an I or a low J--closer to K and also whether the stone has any flourescence.I think this is something you would have to see to determine whether it is worth sacrificing color to get size. If it looks good to you then you would be getting a large stone at a better price.
 
I am planning to buy online, not too sure how to view color online. Any tips?
 
Most Priceline vendors will give you an honest opinion if you make your expectations clear. There is no point to taking a stone out of circulation only to have it returned.
In this case, I would not trust a vendor who drop ships. If it is not in their inventory, It would be worth having it sent to them for inspection.
If the stone sounds of interest after you speak with the vendor about it, you can have the vendor ship it to an approved appraiser in your area where you can see it and have it appraised before you make a commitment.
 
Also, if you like sapphires, they would make great sides stones, and the color contrast will definitely make the center stone look whiter.
 
I will only consider to set in a yellow gold, j color is pre......yellowish
 
I have a J pendant, it is much smaller (0.40 round) and I see a tinge of color from the side, but I find it completely white face up. I love it and find it to be a great value. I would definitely buy J stones again for earrings and pendants. Not sure about for a ring, bc I''ve heard that you see more yellow in a larger size. Can you go somewhere locally and look at some Js to see what you think before finalizing your purchase?

Well, honestly, this is a common misconception. A lower color grade stone may show some "warmth"... a creaminess... but not necessarily "yellow". Especially well-cut stones, graded by a reputable lab... and I know this because I have a 2.36 J RB diamond that shows no "yellow" at all.

I don''t know much about cushions (except that I love them!) --- but I think a 3 carat cushion in a J could be GORGEOUS!

My 4 carat cushion is a K. The amount of yellow that you can see can vary greatly depending on what light I am in. There are times when I see no yellow at all. Regardless, I think that it is beautiful even when you can see the yellow. The color adds a beautiful warmth. I also think that it gives the stone more of a "real" look. Let''s face it, not many of us can afford a near colorless 4 carat stone.

My stone is set in platinum with a halo and pave band. The stones in the halo and band are bright and sparkly which helps to bring the color up. I have never regreted my purchase!

If you matched the tint in the trillions to that of the center stone, I doubt it would be too yellow. This bad pic is my 8mm J European cut (not Old European, the later cut w/ big table). Center is high J, sides are much whiter, probably E/F, and settling is platinum. The contrast between sides and center bothers me some, but it''s an estate ring so I''m not going to change it. There''s not much tint even from the side.

There are threads in Show Me The Ring of J and K in platinum. Also, a recent reset of a K OEC in white metal with blue sapphire sides.

Do you have any pictures, it really sounds like a lovely ring!! I bet more than a few of us would like to see them!

ok, being completely honest, i used to luv the slight warmth of a J... but, over time, it's began to nag at me. i looks a bit off to my eyes. not sure what's changed to make me 'suddenly' color sensitive but i wld no longer get a J in a fancy. just my opin, for what it's worth (or not)

interesting... i find that when i get my blue sapphire near my J, it makes the J look even more tinted. not sure why that is or if it''s my eyes playing tricks?

I think not all lower colors are created equally. Depending on the quality of cut, amount of blue fluorescence (which will make it appear whiter), whether it''s a GIA graded J or an EGL J, etc. can all play a factor in whether you like the looks of it or not. It also depends on what your heart is set on. Are you hoping to look down at your hand and see a bright white diamond? If so, the J may disappoint you. Are you planning to set it into something sort of vintage looking? If so, the J may be perfect. It just all depends.

My personal preference is lower colors in vintage settings - lower than J especially, which is not because I''m sacrificing color for size but because that is the color my eyes prefer (lucky for my pocketbook) in antique cuts. To me, J can be lovely or it can be just on the borderline of "not quite white, not quite warm" - I think you''d have to see it in person to be sure. Is there a good return policy? Warm colored diamonds can have that perfect candlelight glow to them - especially the ones that have a sandy, peachy tint rather than yellow.

Each diamond has its own character and personality, especially at this size! Personally I think it has enough potential to be fantastic that you should see it in person, definitely. But I love a little "flavor" in my rocks :)
 
I personally wouldn''t go lower than a H in cushion. they just do not mask color like a round. Now, if you like the warmth and are going for an antique like softness to your stone than the J might be fine. cehrabehra has a 2+ carat J cushion but was seeking a K or L so she wanted the warmth/color. depends on what look your after.
 
here''s tiger007''s antique cushion which I think is an M. But she was going for the warmth of of lower color stone with size being an objective of well. the setting was made by Leon Mege...

The great light-return of an ideal cut RB might easily overpower the tint in a J-colored round brilliant, but I personally would be *very* hesitant to get a larger cushion of J color before not only seeing it in person, but under various lighting conditions and relative to better colored stones. Personally, I''d be tempted to look for a slightly smaller size to get a better color if you''re on an exact budget. Can you get it to a local appraiser and see it in person before finalizing the purchase at least?
 
Obviously the better the cut the more the color will be masked. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 1.59 J color RB set in platinum. But it is a round, and an AGS000 cut at that. I wouldn''t rule out any J, just would want to do a lot of homework on it. :)
