so it looks like if people are making 100,000 or More in the US, the are making a lot.

Hmm. While I don't doubt that anyone making over 100,000 is doing far far better than the usual in the US, I am pretty sure that map (for Oklahoma at least) isn't quite right. That map has Canadian County as the highest median income areas, and Oklahoma County (which has Oklahoma City in it) as about 2 shades down. Unless everyone with money has moved to Canadian County and forgot to tell us, I'd say Oklahoma County is the one with the higher median. There really isn't that much in Canadian County, for all that it has come up in the world in the last 20 years or so.

I could be wrong, but they did say that the map had some statistical error, so maybe that's it.

Interesting for sure though. I know I make a high salary for a single woman in OKC, and with my husband and combined with the fact that we don't have kids, we have a higher net worth than I ever would have thought possible. It's never enough to make one FEEL comfortable, but if the numbers are right, we are situated FAR beyond the average American, in both net worth, income, and educational attainment. It's sobering really, because we we really don't make much by most high-income standards stated in this thread. That and to realize just HOW many people make a subsistence living. But then Oklahoma has quite a high poverty rate at about 5% above the national average.

Where you live and work obviously play a big role in relative income levels, but as a rough guide for the US, household income over $100,000 is roughly top 20% and household income over $180,000 is roughly top 5%. The latest publicly available data is available here: http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/

Alternatively, IRS data shows that an AGI of over $100,000 is roughly top 15% and an AGI of over $200,000 is roughly top 5% of individual income tax returns. http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/indtaxstats/article/0,,id=98123,00.html

Top 5% is high IMO.

We live in Florida and have five kids in college at the same time right now (2nd marriage, combined family). My husband paid child support and alimony until early this year. Not one of the kids got a scholarship. $200k is a high paying job, but you have to consider your location and your expenses.

I'm in Chicago, so I'd say a high paying job is $150K or more.

I think 150k to 200k is a high paying job.
