I can seriously just suck up sleep like a sponge. I could fall asleep right now as a matter of fact. Yesterday I worked a half day at work so I slept in... got 11 hours, and STILL wanted a nap. Today, working on about 7 hours and I''m dying to curl up in my car at lunch and snooze.

I don''t know if I''m depressed... as the first time I was depressed I slept like 18 hours a day. Or if something''s wacky with me. Or if I''m just so stressed, I''m dealing with it by shutting off every chance I get.

All I know is on Wednesday I slept 8 hours the night before managed 3 hours in naps during the day (lunch, then after work), and at 11 pm was STILL fall over dead with exhaustion and weariness.

What could be up. Should I call my MD? I probably should....

Oops. Meant to post this in Family & Home.

Hmm. Maybe you should, you could be anemic or something. I think spelled that right. I hope you''re not depressed! You have been through a lot lately, so it would make sense though. Well anyway, here''s some good sleep dust! Hehe.

Gypsy, I don''t know but when I was planning a wedding I was exhausted. I notice you have done a lot in the BWW; also, your mom and grandpa were sick (thank goodness they are better), but all that emotional stuff takes a toll on you. Also, it sounds like all the stress of John''s family and other things all can wear a person out. Can you take a relaxing weekend and do nothing just to recoop?? Sending you good R&R vibes.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out if it's just stress and I need rest or if it's more. I can't seem to relax at home. I really wish we could just go away for the weekend somewhere and relax.

I need a nap.

It could be depression too. I just don't know. It's all chemical with depression, but at the same time, they can't measure the chemical imbalance. So it's all goofy.

I've been tested for anemia before. Is it something that you can just develop? Or is it like... you get tested once and you don't have it and never will?

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE DUST AND VIBES!!!

I think it could be so many things. Depression is certainly one of them, as is stress. Too much sleep is also bad, you can wake feeling groggy and even more tired. Just keep that in mind.

I am sorry, as an insomniac I am also always a bit tired and could nap, but not at night when I get into bed. Bummer.

DF I have the same problem usually. I take an Ambien cocktail to help me sleep most nights. But it''s unusual that after 7 or more hours I should be yawny-exhausted and just flat out, run down. Don''t know what''s up.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Do you snore? I mean, the top reason I can think of to still be tired after 8 hours of sleep is if you weren''t actually deep asleep the whole time. Either you''re so stressed you''re not falling as sound asleep as you think, or you''re doing little micro-wakes in the middle.

And weddings are really stressful. Getting married and making such a huge change in your life is stressful, and then to add all the planning and the pressure.... Well I had a mini-DW that was as stress free as humanly possible and once I was married I spent most of my Honeymoon asleep! (it was so embarrassing.)

Any chance of being able to go away for the weekend and just forget about everything? Dh and I were getting stressed over life so we just drove an hour away and had a mini-vacation on the coast. Stayed at a Casino, walked along the beach. I swear, the second we got out of the car at the hotel I started to relax.

You might also try emergen-C packets. Those always help perk people up.

Certainly depression is a canidate, especially since it is a recent development, but there are others. The girls have a lot of good suggestions, but what about Mono? You are still young enough where it would make you sick and it would explain the constant exhaustion. I know it sounds exaclty like when I had it in college.

Have you considered hormone problems? Sometimes those can really upset your body and cause sleep problems. I would wait to get tested on that until you have ruled other things out as the tests tend to be very expensive and insurance will only cover it if everything else has been tested for.

Sleep apnea is another possibility. My brother was treated for it and it made a world of difference.

Follow your instincts and go see your doctor. As you probably are aware, physcial conditions need to be ruled out before turning to the psychological. Depression can be tricky to diagnose, as it comes in many forms and it even has an influence on the body, which is why you should see your doctor, as you never can tell.

Gypsy, it seems like pretty much everyone I know has been unusually tired lately, including me. Part of it might have to do with the time change -- it doesn''t seem like a big deal but it always takes me forever to get my inner clock back in balance.

It certainly wouldn''t hurt to see your doctor, though, especially if this has been going on for awhile. Anemia (as far as I know) can develop at any time, especially if you''re not eating right and taking in enough iron. It''s common in women, especially vegetarian women, because 1) we lose blood on a regular basis, which has to be replaced, and 2) a lot of us don''t eat enough iron-rich food, like dark green, leafy veggies and red meat. So your doctor might test you for it again.

Either way, if something is out of balance, it''s better to find out now and get it treated early than to wait until it possibly gets worse. And even if nothing is medically wrong, a weekend of lavish relaxation doesn''t sound like a half-bad plan!

I sure hope you get to feeling better! Have your hemoglobin checked again if you haven''t done so lately. Your Dr. should be able to do a simple finger prick in the office...My DD''s pediatrician just did one for her. I think stress could be a factor, too. How much caffine are you consuming? A lot? None? Now may be the time to start
28.gif
. How''s your diet? Remember the old saying, you are what you eat. If you eat junk, you feel like junk. Be sure you are eating lots of nutritious foods including enough protein. When I don''t eat enough I feel so tired. I usually have a whey protein shake with soy milk for breakfast so I at least start the day off with some protein. On the more personal front, could you be pg? PMSing? Sometimes before, during or after your period you may be more tired. Some months are just worse than others. Try taking a walk. Get that oxygen coursing through your body. If you are worried about depression you should see your Dr. right away.

Yeah, I''m also wondering if you could be pregnant....

Gypsy...I''m so sorry to hear that you have been feeling this way! I definitely think you should get checked out by your Dr. to rule out things. I have been stressed out a lot lately as well and was feeling the same way. I went to the Dr. and he ordered a lot of tests, but nothing weird has came back yet. I tweaked my diet and started taking my vitamins regularly and I am already feeling some improvement. I hope that you are able to figure out what is wrong so that you can deal with it, but until then make sure that you are getting rest and eating well!

Gypsy, I may be wrong, but I believe you can develop Anemia at any time, and can be tied to your diet. I was REALLY tired awhile back as well, and started taking an MVI with iron (anemia=iron low, I believe) and started feeling better in a few days. For sure call your MD! Hope you feel better soon.

Don''t think I"m preggers. Just finished my cycle. But can take a test to double check.

Was just tested for sleep apnea a little while ago. Don''t have it. I do have "primary snoring" though... Lucky John.

I''m ON antidepressants and seeing a doctor, one I don''t trust and need to replace, for that right now. And he keeps adjusting my meds for that. I don''t know if that''s what''s wacky or what.

My thyroid was checked in November.

And I *think* I''ve been eating okay.

No exercise though. So that''s definitely something B A D.

Will call Doctor on Monday and get an appointment.

Just took a nap for lunch. And all I want to do is take another.

Mono is something that NEVER occured to me. I''m 32, does it really still happen?

I felt the same way once, and it turned out to be Mono...! I think a trip to the doctor is warranted.

PS...I was in my 20's when it happened and from what I researched, you can get it at any age. However, it's a virus kind of like Chicken Pox, once you've had it, you can't get it again.

ETA: feel the glands in your neck and armpits, if they are swollen that is another sign of mono. When I had it, the glands in my neck were huge!

I think if I were you I''d have all the blood work done to rule our anemia, mono, thyroid etc. If everything''s okay there then ask if the anti-depressant you''re taking is no longer working for you. Unfortunately, there''s no blood test for that, but many other effective anti -depressant meds to try.

Okay, I''ll stop trying to diagnose the physical aspects and instead remind you of all the stressful (and therefore exhausting) things you''ve been juggling:

Grandpa''s pneumonia
Mom''s next surgery or two
Wedding planning taken to the nth degree
John''s job search

That list makes me tired and I''m not even involved!! If your bloodwork is normal, just go away with John and try to have a relaxing undisturbed weekend.

if you rule out stress, depression, thyroid I would get checked for iron levels (are you getting dizzy) and possibly even food intolerance to a certain food type. Before I found out I was intolerant to wheat and certain forms of dairy I was seriously tired all the time I would nanna naps after nanna naps my body just could not stay awake.

Cutting these foods out of my diet and detoxing to reset my body helped immensely and I had more energy and more then anything I could stay awake :)

Definitely go see the doctor :)

Layla. I''m 30, have had mono (and strep at the same time when I was 14 which put me in the hospital for 3 days) and since then I have suffered debilitating migraines, sleeplessness.too much sleep/always tired. I have a physical every year, full bloodwork, etc. Nothing has ever been "wrong" with me. In the winter I have always required more sleep than my "normal" 8-9 hours. Every 4-5 days, I sleep about 12-14 hours, without question. It really goes in cycles with me...sometimes I sleep 6-7 hours for a few days and feel great! Then I will sleep 8-10 hours a night for 2-3 days and feel ok. Then..I will sleep for 10-15 hrs. a night plus a nap during the day and feel like I still haven''t slept enough. I''ve done the doctor thing, I''ve been tested to death...nothing is ever inherently or medically "wrong" with me. So my conclusion is that if I need to sleep, I sleep. End of story. if I''m tired, I sleep. If I''m too tired, sometimes I can''t sleep and rely on Tylenol or advil PM''s for a night or two.

No one ever said that everyone sleeps the same amount each day without fail. There may be nothing wrong with you at all. It may just be that your body is telling you that you need to get some extra rest and that''s all.

Gypsy, sorry to hear that you''re not feeling well. You did have ALOT of stress and worries in your life lately so your body could just be crashing from that. Mono at 32 is possible. My friend who is 30 was just diagnosed with it. She noticed that she''s been sleeping alot and can''t even finish our usual 6-mile run. She also told me that she''s been falling asleep when she gets home from work. I think the best thing is to see a doctor and get it checked out.
BTW, I used to take Ambien and it made me really groggy the next day. Are you getting 8-9 hours of sleep on the nights that you take Ambien?
I hope you feel better soon!!!

hi gypsy! sometimes when i am feeling bad i find getting up and getting out and taking a walk can be energizing. i believe your job would have you sitting most of the day. add the sedentary day and reading both on paper and the computer would make me sleepy. maybe try a walk instead of a noon nap and see if it helps. i hope this weekend gives you a chance to get some good sleep and to get out for something fun to energize you.

Gypsy,

You should probably call your dr. and let him see you....Get a full physical exam including bloodwork to check for anemia, thyroid, etc. Just to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong....Better to be safe than sorry, you know?

Do you exercise? I frequently am tired as well because I am not a good sleeper, but I find that exercising really helps with my energy levels. If I miss a workout (which I try to do in the morning most days) I really feel much more tired for the rest of the day vs. when I do work out. I try to get to the gym 4-5 days a wk for 1-1.5 hrs each time- combo of cardio and wt. training. I think it does help alot. Good luck!

Gypsy, I tend to find that ''hyper-somnia'' is one of my main depression indicators and happens very early on before I start to go really downhill. Craving carbs is another bad sign for me.

Even if you are on an antidepressant this can happen.

My trick is to get a good dose of sunlight and take some serious exercise for a couple of days - last thing I normally feel like...

On the other hand, you are probably just stressed and emotionally drained - or coming down with something.

Anyway, I really hope you feel better soon.

hyper-somnia. That''s exactly it. I slept for 12+ hours last night. Took a 2+ hour nap at 7 pm. It''s one am, and I''m really for sleep again. That''s actually my biggest fear, that it''s an indicator of a bad downturn about to come. Carbs, interesting. I''m usually a big meat eater, but haven''t been having cravings for meat at all recently. Which is very strange for me. Iron is a good point too. I''m not bruising more than normal, and my glands feel fine.

Monnie, that could be a possiblity. I''ve never been a person who can survive on too little sleep. I''ve always needed more sleep than most. Just never THIS much.

I''m not excercising at ALL. I know I need to. And know it will help me. But the thougt of it is like ... walking through mud. Which is another depression thing... when I get really depressed everything seems like too much effort. I''m scared. I don''t want to slide into that place again. I really don''t. But then again, when I get stressed out I sleep. John swears it''s the most uncanny thing, unlike most people that get super stresssed and vibrate with it wide awake, when I reach my stress limit, my body just shuts down and I sleep like a baby. We fight, he''s up all night, I''m dead asleep. We''re both stressed and upset, I might even cry in my sleep, but I''m asleep. Just shut down.

I''ll call my MD on Monday and get the physical stuff out of the way. I''m about due anyway for a yearly... May, but close enough.

Thanks so much for all the concern and good vibes my friends. I''ll keep you all updated.

Oh dear.... I hope you were'nt actually posting when my computer says you were ... at 4 a.m.?

But I digress...

I recently had a major problem

when my health plan substituted generic ADs for the name-brand I had been using before. I understand the generics work for many people, but I wasn't among them. Another thing you might consider.

**hugs!**

that''s how i would feel before finding out i was pregnant.........just could not sleep enough.

now its seasonal related with allergies............

I agree w/the allergies! I am so sleepy and zyrtec, claritin and xyzal make me sleepy too! Maybe allergies. Stress does it to me too; I just get so worn out and want to sleep and I feel like I have too much on my plate! When I use to fly all over the country for work; I slept like I never had before so I do think stress and too much work can wear a person out or taking on toooo much!!! My hubby use to call me the champion sleeper!!!

Also, I have been reading a lot about sleep lately because I use to sleep a lot more, but the older we get (not that you are old nor am I) but we cannot get a restful sleep so we tend to be more tired. My sleep is so different than 10 years ago; I could sleep back then. Now I need less sleep or don't sleep as well.

eta: Gypsy, I would try to get exercise in; I suffer from a bit of insomnia and I notice when I get a good workout in it helps w/sleep. Hope you feel better soon!

Pregnancy definately made me sleepy. Post-baby, my issue was and still is predominantly iron. I take "Slow-Fe", a slow release iron which is easier on the stomach.
