Hi Everybody! My life is not as exciting as several others here on the forum, but I thought I''d say a little blurb.

I''ll start with my online name. My folks adopted a puppy and we named her Pele (Hawaiian volcano goddess, not the soccor player). She has been one fiery dog!

Her nickname is Poopey. Why? She was always getting into trouble, chewing on things, jumping, digging, etc. In fact she learned how to pick flowers and fruit. She picked off all the flowers off the rose bushes, just as they were opening and ate all the pears from the tree, just as they ripened! When I saw what she did, I would say "oh, poopey!" instead of "oh, s---" and thats how she got her nickname.

I tease the dog calling her Pele Poop (sounds a little like Betty Boop) and thought about having that as a screen name but I didn''t think it would go over well. So Pelepup was born.

Hiya Pelepup...

I remember you from *way* back!

Nice to talk to you!

Any Pictures of your dog??

Like win, I remember you well, pelepup :-). I am so glad to have you here on Pricescope where I can talk to you :-). You didn't say if you are Hawaiian. Are you? Kamuelamom, who posts here, is. She has great photographs! :-)

Pelepup, good to see another familiar face!

Pelepup, it's great to see you here.

I didn't realize the meaning behind your name. It's interesting because I live on the Big Island, where the volcanoes are *still* active after a 20 year stretch.
6.gif
And we don't see any end to its activity in sight. In that sense, Pele is very busy.

Just to clarify what AGBF said, I am only "Hawaiian" in the sense that I was born and raised here, and Hawaiian at heart. It's a cultural thing, like saying "Californian" I guess.
1.gif
But "Hawaiian" by genes, I am not, although it *is* actually a genetic race as well. It is a very proud race, much like the Native Americans. We have lived among them all our lives so the lines of distinction between culture and genes are very thin.

ABGF, thanks for the kind words on the photos. I hope to keep sending more your way.

Oh, dear. I hate having to say what race or ethnic group anyone is from. I had to decide whether my daughter, fresh out of Colombia at three months old but being Caucasian-looking and being raised in our English-speaking family, was Hispanic when we applied for her first social security card! I decided she was (or wasn't) the first time. Then when (at 4 months) she became a citizen, I updated her social security card and decided the opposite. I have no idea, now, if she is listed as Hispanic or not. I have no idea whether she *is* Hispanic or not! These questions drive me mad :-).

Oh gosh, AGBF, I totally hear you. But here, I think there exists such a great distinction because there is benefit in many respects if you *are* of "Hawaiian" ancestry.
9.gif

For example, there is a billion-dollar-plus estate which educates children of Hawaiian ancestry called the Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate. If you are not of a certain percentage of Hawaiian ancestry you need not apply.
1.gif
So in that situation there really is a purpose for the distinction. The similar applies to land acquisition, as we have something declared within our state called "Hawaiian Homes" where by you can apply for designated parcels of land (leased to you for a $1 per year, for the next 100 years or something like that), but again, you must be a certain percentage of Hawaiian ancestry. There are extremely strict guidelines for acquiring those parcels, which range from house lots to 100 acre parcels for ag. use.

Hawaii is such a special place with a rainbow of cultures and ethinicities. True you can have that in other areas, but something about this place makes it special. It's what we call The Aloha Spirit. It is something you can only *really* experience once you either visit or live here. It is something that even ethnic genes cannot distinguish.

After re-reading my original post in this thread, I wanted to apologize AGBF or anyone I may have offended if my original post appeared "racey" or negative in any way. That was NOT my intent. I simply wanted to clarify, for those who may not know, that there *is* indeed a race called "Hawaiian." And since they are a proud people it means a lot (to some here) if you are Hawaiian or even part Hawaiian since it is a dying race. I am actually Japanese American.

This state is unique that way since these natives originally settled here many many years ago. They are a very special people. They were self reliant and depended on the "aina," the land for their existence. Pelepup, not sure but you actually may know a little about this--I take it you have some interest in the culture with your knowledge of Pele.
1.gif
I would be only so proud to say that I carried those genes from my ancestors...but I don't.
8.gif
That is why I have to settle for being Hawaiian at heart. It is the only claim to the Hawaiian culture that I have and cherish.
1.gif

But really to me, the only race I am really concerned with is humanity.

Hope this all makes sense.

Well, all In can say is Thank God you apologized. I was truly deeply offended by your posting where you spoke about not being Hawaiian. If you hadn't apologized as you did I could never have felt the same about you. At least you came to your senses. Maybe I can forgive you. In time. After a long time. A good long time. As long as you meditate on your crimes.

Love,
Deb ;-)...you silly goose!!!!
