Hi everyone! I''ve been lurking for a few months, but now I have something to post about and I don''t know where else to go!

A little while ago I got my engagement ring, a platinum pave band (about 2.1-2.3mm) with a .60 carat diamond from James Allen. First let me start with, it is BEAUTIFUL. The diamond is really striking and generally I''m very happy with the look. Unfortunately I am VERY picky and I noticed the setting was uneven. The left side looked larger than the right, RIGHT by the middle diamond which made it noticeable. So I sent it back to be repaired, which was scary because I couldn''t see it until it came back. Now, I''ve had it for 3 days and from far away it appears even, but its not

The left side is now THINNER than the right (about 3-4 diamonds in length). In fact, the left side is thinner than I ever wanted for a ring (though the right side looks perfect!).

I''m not sure what the problem is: Is it me? My mom and fiancee say I''m being too picky and I should just embrace to imperfections. I know that I have hust my fiancee''s feelings b/c this was a lot for him to afford right now (I hate myself for not just getting over it!) I just wish I would''ve know this setting was difficult to make even. I can''t IMAGINE sending it back again, to say that the LEFT side (that the just put smaller diamonds in) needs to be larger. Plus I''m scared that my ring is getting so thin! I''m just not sure how to get over it and not obsess. Is this something I could try to find a local jeweler to fix (at least I could be there then)? Or should I just accept that this is the way it is, and reset it in a few years?

Thanks for listening. I don''t want to sound negative about James Allen as I have a exquisite diamond and have had great customer service. I''m sure this is just a fluke.

I will try, though my camera hasn''t been able to take a clear picture of it. (I''ll keep trying :)).

Just try and take a photo and put it on here. Do you have a digital camera? I find the best way to shoot my ring is to put it on the macro setting (the little flower) and go outside in daylight. Don''t use the flash and make sure you hold it very still. That should help in getting opinions. Take lots of different angles too to make sure it''s not an optical illiusion.

I will say don''t let your fiancees feelings bother you. Just let him know you know he paid a lot of money for this and you want him to get the best money can buy, you don''t want him to spend his hard earned cash and NOT have something come out perfectly.
 
I would keep trying till it looks the way you want it to. Your FI and mom may indeed notice it but are too shy to say anything.

I got my engagement ring back from a shoddy jeweler--this jewler only had to set the stone (stone and band were purchased seperately) and it was beyond hideous...at first my family responded with ''it looks good'' (with tons of forced positive in their voices) but when i finally did get it fixed the truth came out...they resonded with " thank GAWD you got that thing fixed, we could see the problem from across the room...that was sooooo bad...etc. etc."

so keep working on it!

Would you (if you were me) have it fixed by James Allen''s company again, or would you try to find a local jeweler? I''m nervous to send it back b/c I couldn''t talk to any jeweler''s, only a oerson in customer services. I guess I''m just afraid it will get worse.

Things might of changed since I purchased through James Allen but mine was sent out to a jeweler, so I didn''t get to speak to them eithier. Have you spoken to Jim himself? If I were you I would ask to speak to Jim directly and explain your concerns and questions. Be honest with him and i''m sure he will do his best to accomodate you.

Yes, at this point you need to speak with him.
 
I attached a not-so-great pic of the ring (apparantly my camera isn''t so great!). I only put up one because I didn''t know how to get them on in the best manner. The only way that seems to work is attaching. Is that right?

By the way, I talked to fiancee about it. I accidently burst into tears- ohhhhh being an emotional woman! Anyhow he was pretty good about it. Now my worry is, will it get worse?????????? I''m scared. I do think it''s a good idea to try to talk to Jim. Do I just call and ask for him? Since they wouldn''t let me talk to the ring designer, I didn''t know I could talk to him!

Does your camera have a macro mode? It''s usually designated by a little flower...try that, and the photos should come out better.

I *think* I see what you''re talking about with the unevenness. I''d call JA.
 
well, from the pics it does look to be different widths on either side of the shank. Pics can be deceiving though but you''ve got to go with what you see in person. something like that would bother me so calling JA and having it fixed would be what I''d do.
 
The pics are blurry but I can see what you mean. If it looks tapered on one side of the shank and not on the other side, I''d definitely call them to find out what can be done because it would probably drive me nuts.
 
Well, I just got back from a local jeweler, just to get a opinion. He told me that it starts at 2.01 mm, dips to 1.78, then returns to about 2+. The RIGHT side goes from 1.91 up to 2+ or so gradually. He told me the only way to fix it is to have it completely reset. I think I (or fiancee) will be calling James Allen tomorrow. That''s just not right! But again, my fear is that if they did it wrong orginally, then FIXED it wrong, how do I know they will reset it correctly????
 
It may not be possible to get both sides precisely even, but I can see why it bugs you, and agree that you should have it fixed. The tapering is noticeable in the pics to me too. Definitely phone JA. Good luck! Beautiful ring btw.
 
UPDATE: So I sent it back to James Allen and were VERY helpful. Very accomodating to what I wanted. Just got it back last night. Band looks good, much better than before. I was just about to be excited when I looked at the prongs. I know I sound too picky but my fiance noticed this right off the bat too. One prong is about a head shorter than the others and slightly twisted, making the whole head look off.

I AM IRATE and so, so sad. I can''t tell you how excited I was to get my ring back FOR THE THIRD TIME! Anyhow, we''re going to call today but honestly I''m at a loss of what I want. I don''t know if I should try to get it fixed and try to just return it. I''m so sad b/c I love it and I''m not sure if we''d be able to find something so fancy at a jewelry store for what we paid. Yet, I can''t even tell you all in words how I feel about sending it back THREE times. We ordered this ring 10 weeks ago and it''s STILL not right. Any opinions? What would you do?
 
gosh that is sad..i''m so sorry. your setting was not inexpensive so your expectations of having the shank be the same width and the head on straight are not unrealistic. If you are up for it, you can always have them try to fix it again, although if it were me, I''d probably just get a refund and get a different setting. there are many styles like that out there today in your price range, so starting over might be a great way to just make a newer happier memory.

I agree....I think you will be much happier in the end if when you think about your ring all this mess doesnt come to mind. What an awful situation! I am so sorry you had to part with your ring so much, I know I would be super bummed. Good luck and let us know what you decide!
