No.
I hate TV.
Never watch it.
Hideous, vile invention!
More mind-damaging, insidious, and addictive than heroin OR religion.

Now, after a few generations of 100% penetration there is no hope of freedom from, or possibility of objective perspective regarding TV.
Today almost everyone sees the TV as harmless.

If my SO put a TV in the living room I'd dump him in a heartbeat.
His TV is behind two closed doors.

Really? I work in mental health and cannot count how many lives I have seen that have been ruined by drugs. That is not even counting the family members who have suffered because of the drug addiction. I haven't seen one life destroyed by television though!

Oh, I'm just ranting irrationally.

I know everyone loves TV.

Oh ok :cheeky:

Thanks for the responses everyone!

We decided to get a wood-burning insert for our fireplace, so tv over fireplace isn't going to happen, otherwise it would be a melted tv! There isn't nearly enough room about the fireplace either, as others pointed out might be a problem.

DiamondSeeker - Your bookcases and fireplace are beautiful! I love the symmetry! I also think the tv looks great there, as it seems you have high ceilings.

PG - Do you have photos of your bookcases? I mentioned built-in bookcases to my husband. I've mentioned it a few times, actually. I showed him a photo, which prompted him to encourage me to build them!! I imagine you hired a contractor? I'd love to see them if you have the time and inclination to post. :wavey:

We are very excited about our wood-burning insert. They say you can load the stove with wood and it will burn for 8 hours straight without requiring more wood! They also say it can heat an entire home, but that remains to be seen. I'd be happy to just have one room heated, and the ambiance, of course, too!

Here's our little stove. It should be installed by Thanksgiving! :))

That's really pretty, LV!

My grandparents only source of heat in their house is a wood burning stove. It works very well. My husbands grandmother also uses it as her only source (although she does have other options) and has a cooktop on hers. They are so cozy and warm the heart. Hopefully yours comes soon! :appl:

Thats a lovely stove! I wish we had one. But we have a modern electric fire that looks uncannily like a wall mounted tv! I live in a military house so unfortunately we can't remove it. I hope our next house doesn't have one!

LV, here are some pics. Ignore the clutter - we obviously needed them because we have storage issues now that we have a certain tiny person. ;) We had our neighbor build them, and I wouldn't say I'm 100% satisfied. He had to put random little support pieces in the middle of the bookcases, one of the shelves without an extra support is a little bowed, and the mantle isn't matched exactly. But it does the job and I'm sure super fancy ones would have cost a lot more.

ETA: I wanted a white background to the bookcases, but DH wanted to keep the original wall color. He also wanted to put the little strips on the side. I definitely think you could get a carpenter to make something a lot more finished-looking, but I hope the general idea is helpful!

If you have a very large TV room that you can move the couch far enough back that you're not crinking your neck to watch TV, then go for it. I chose an articulating mount and installed it just next to the fire place. The bottom of my TV is actually 2-3 inches lower than my fireplace mantel.

What is this thing you cal a "television"?

PG - Oh, thank you so much for posting photos! I love your bookcases!! I especially love the windows above them, too. Can I guess -- was your house built in the 30s-ish? You have lovely floors too.

LV, it was actually built in the teens. We've got to plan its 100th birthday in a few years!
