Is this worth more than say, $50?

Hello all ;)

I figured this would be a quick question to answer so hopefully some of you won't mind pointing me in the right direction. I was cleaning out my jewelry box and found these three items, all from my pre-PS days.

The stud is a .25ct mall diamond in 14kt wg earring that I lost the partner for while snorkeling a few years ago.
The two gold and sapphire rings were actually my mom's, so they are at least 20 years old, I'm sure from a mall store. The one on the left is stamped 10kt, the one with the marquise sapphire is stamped 14kt. The marquise has a small chip on the girdle, and all of the sapphires in both rings are obviously really dark "mall" quality. The diamonds on the marquise ring don't look too bad though.

Basically I know that I'm not going to unload these on Diamond Bistro, as there obviously isn't much demand for this stuff, but is it even worth anything for scrap? I don't want to walk into a store to ask and have them laugh at me if it's not even worth taking up their time, and I'm pretty positive that those "mail us your gold" things aren't a good idea. So, essentially, do you think this is worth anything? If not I'll hang on to them, but if so, do I just look for a jewelery buyer in my town (San Diego)?

Thanks!

The sapphire band might have a buyer or two because it could be stacked list it for 150 (or some amount over scrap) on DB see what happens. The other ring I would scrap for gold somewhere decent, and pull out the diamonds and sell them for 30 bucks or so. The stud...um. List that on ebay with no reserve as "SINGLE NATURAL DIAMOND STUD EARRING" with some good pictures and see what you get.

Hehe thanks Gypsy! I've never done this before, so just for reference, how much do you think it would be worth for just scrap? I'm inclined to not even deal with selling online.

Well, you would need to know the weight of it all minus stones. Bill Pearlman has a calculator on this site: http://www.ppmaa.com/

If you really just want quick and trustworthy, call Pearlmans and just send in your stuff and have Bill but you a check. He's a doll.

Thanks!

And you can go in almost any jewelry store and ask what they will give you for scrap and the larger diamond. I have done that many times. Then if they don't sell, you can scrap them.

I think you would get at least $50 for scrap if that's what you decide to do. I took a few old pieces into a local jeweler and got $200 for them and it really wasn't much more gold than what you have there. I would just go check with a local jeweler to get an idea of what you could get.

I have some similar stuff and was going to ask a pawn broker near here. I'll let you know!

If you decide to sell for scrap, be sure to call around and see how much places are willing to pay you per gram for the gold. I've sold stuff in the past and found that there is a huge range between different places. The place that I found that paid the most was located in one of the more expensive cities/ "high-end city?" Not sure what you'd call it. They paid three-four times as much as other places.

ETA - oh and don't expect much for the diamond...sorry! From what I was told, they are overloaded with diamonds and don't take things under a ct unless the piece is unique. I went in to sell scrap gold and the guy was drooling over my pendant which I was NOT about to give up! ;))

My local jewelers ALL pay less than HALF what Pearlmans does. And only ONE Of them will match Pearlmans, but only as store credit, not cash.

I have always gotten more when I've sold items as scrap on eBay than I have taking things to a jeweler.
Good luck!

This thread is good timing for me! I have some jewelry similar to the OP's that I have worn in years and have always wondering if I could get anything for it. I also have some 14kt gold chains and earrings that I'd be interested in selling as well. Perhaps I should contact Pearlman's? None of the jewelry is fancy, expensive stuff....mostly all mall quality.

Hmmmm.......

Ditto Gypsy. I sold all my gold to Pearlmans from my ex because I didn't want it anymore. I used the money towards a new purchase. I used the calculator to get an estimate. I weighted my stuff in ounces on the kitchen scale. I knocked a few ounces off for the stones. I was hoping for $600 based on my numbers. I got $825 and some change.

Oh! And make sure to tell them you are a PSer!

I just wanted to give everyone a final thank you! I have started the process with Pearlman's. I'm not expecting much at all, but considering I would be comfortable literally just tossing them, anything I can get from them would be a bonus!

This is what a good buyer can pay for gold scrap or unwanted jewelry with minor diamonds and colored stones in it. The tiny diamonds really won't bring you any money or very little at best. '
At the bottom you'll find an explanation of how to use a standard mail scale to understand the Troy weight used in gold transactions.

Simply ask how much per gram or per pennyweight the buy will pay you? Compare the prices here and keep in mind that gold prices fluctuate. Find out before you sell how much gold is at the moment and make the minor adjustment which is appropriate.

Gold Spot Price 1643.25

10kt

$17.8 gram

$27.65 pennyweight (dwt)

14kt

$24.94 gram

$39.21 dwt

18kt

$32.36 gram

$49.75 dwt

22kt

$39.09 gram

$60.78 dwt

Be very cautious about sending or selling your gold and other precious metals to those who do not clearly tell you how much they pay by the pennyweight(dwt) or gram based on a current market price.

There are 20 dwt in a troy ounce and this ounce is different than the one used with a mail scale or for measuring the weight of food. Follow the steps below to understand pennyweight (dwt) estimation.

To approximate how much precious metal you may have and using your home mail scale simply multiply the readout in ounces by 18.2 and you will have the approximate pennyweight (dwt) that we all use with precious metals.
