I saw one of those Facebook things about "how you know you're a Michigander" and one of them is you measure a distance in time. How far is it? You'd say "10 minutes"

I didn't realize that's different. Is it weird?

We do the same thing here in Houston, mainly due to traffic, I think. A place might only be geographically 5 miles away, but it might take up to 30 minutes to get there, depending upon the time of day. I never thought of this as weird.

We aren't really a state that has heavy traffic, but I just assume everyone did. I suspect its normal but just another thing people on Facebook say to make them self seem like they are unique.... like, if someone answered me in miles I would respond by asking how long in time. The distance in miles seems weirder.

I do that all the time lol. I might also follow it up with the distance in miles but not always. Time is what matters so if something is 10 miles away but takes an hour to get to I think the time value is the more critical number. To me at least!

I do a sort of combination but mostly measure in time. Of course I generally include time ranges -- "We're 30 minutes from Seattle unless the traffic is bad... then it can be a couple of hours."

We do that in Missouri too. We also don't always call things by their right names, specifically Hwy 64. That is 40 here. It is "technically" 64/40/61 but on the Illinois side it's 64, on the MIssouri side it's 40. And despite "the powers" trying to make everyone call it 64, it's still 40. So people who travel through here are probably looking all around when being given directions like "where in the hell is 40. "

normally when I ask for how far the place is my So will tell me in mile and I will have to say translate that to me in min. I am very clueless about how long a mile really is..
