Is this too good to be true?

I have been on here reading and learning for the last 2 months. I know I going to be buying for someone online and I have found a stone I really like, so please give me your opions. The only real thing that makes me a little leary is it is EGL I certified. Here are the specs:

Price: $9,468.00

Weight: 1.53 Cts
Shape & cut: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 7.36 - 7.32 x 4.56 mm
Proportions
Depth: 62.1%
Table: 55%
Crown: 15% (the egl cert doesn''t give angles, should i be conserned?)
Pavillion: 43% (see above question)
Girdle: Medium, Faceted
Finish
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Culet: None

Clarity Grade: VS2

Graining: Nil (don''t know what this is?)

Color Grade: H

Florescence: None

Comments:
"EXCELLENT IDEAL CUT"- The quality of the cut of this diamond achieves Excellence in symmetry
and proportions, thus obtaining the optimal dispersion of light and brilliance. - 8 HEARTS & 8 ARROWS.
I entered the proportions in HCA:
Light Return: Excellent
Fire: Excellent
Scintillation: Excellent
Spread: : Very Good
HCA - .9
So is this a great diamond that is just a lower price because of the EGL Cert or am I way off here??

I don''t know much about rounds but can you tell if the EGL is USA, Europe or Isreal?

Of those three I hear USA is the best and I would shy away form Europe and not touch Isreal with a 10'' pole.

IMO

I can 99% promise you it is not too good to be true. It is probably I or J color and SI clarity if you are lucky. It''s so much easier to stick with GIA or AGS and be reasonably sure you''re getting what you pay for. You''d have to have this stone independently appraised and then decide if you could live with the results. But if you are looking for ideal cut H VS2, I''d be looking at GIA and AGS.

"EXCELLENT IDEAL CUT" - huh... why stop there, they should call it the "SUPER DUPER EXCELLENT IDEAL UBER PRIMO SURPERB CUT" cut titles like this mean pretty much nothing as there is no standard for it. the exception I know of are AGS = IDEAL and GIA = EXCELLENT. to get those titles from those labs there is a set of standards the gem must have. anything else is just marketing/word play.

by the way, i don like my cut grade title best :)

Firstly EGL use percents for crown and pavilion, which are said to not be as accurate as angles. If you like this diamond, make the sale final on it checking out for colour and clarity, with an independant appraiser.

Maybe, maybe not. EGL uses % and not angles so the HCA might be inaccurate. Still, I wouldn''t dismiss the stone just yet. Spending close to $10K is a lot of money so I''d get the colour and clarity checked out with an independant appraiser. If it is a true I VS2 and you like it, then I don''t see why not.

Also, since the vendor is touting this as an H&A stone, I''d ask for a picture of the heart and a picture of the arrows.

Hello!

I wouldn''t write the stone off simply because of the EGL certificate. However, you should be aware that if the stone were sent to AGSL or GIA you might well find it would not be certed by these labs as being an H VS2.

There is a chance that GIA.AGSL would have certficated the diamond as perhaps I or J SI1 instead. Of course, it may be that EGL have been strict with this stone and that the cert is spot on!

As the others have suggested, if you are interested in this diamond you should consider having is sent to a completely independent appraiser to get their comments on the colour and clarity.

Others on here have bought EGL diamonds and are delighted with them. :)
