After spending hours at large, reputable jewelers in Boston, I found myself talking to the proprietor of a small, somewhat sketchy jewelry store. Long story short, I ended up unable to refuse a deal for a diamond that, to the eye, appeared magnificent, but the price was so far below what the other jewelers were charging, I am a bit concerned that I have somehow been hoodwinked.

Here''s the specifics:

Princess Cut
0.89 carats
68.4% depth
79% table
Good polish and symmetry
Clarity = VVS2
Color = D
GIA Certified

Price: $3400.

Is it possible that I lucked out and found a tremendous deal?? Thanks for your replies.

I saw quite a few Princess' in my search with stats like that, where the table is bigger than ideal. Does it have a fish-eye effect?

Hopefully the experts will chime in and give you feedback.

Uh-oh.....I didn't notice a fish eye effect, but to be honest, I am such a novice that I'm not sure I'd recognize it even if it were profoundly obvious. I'm picking the ring up tomorrow....can any experts help????

Thanks for the reply.

The only way to tell is for an independant appraiser to look at it.
From this side of the computer screen we cant tell you much.
Id recomend that you imediatly set an appointment with an appraiser.

I'm not an expert, just a Princess lover with an opinion.
I won't bore you here with the details of my own Princess search, but suffice to say, I looked at lots and lots of them and there is a HUGE difference between a well cut one and the other 99%. It is well worth taking the time to find a top cut.

That said, I think you should keep looking.

1. If you haven't already, check out the charts at www.gemappraisers.com, this is a great starting place, and I found their numbers to be a very good guide to performance.

2. You've got a pretty large table there, I prefer them under 70%, if they're too big you risk a flat glassy look when the stone is mounted.

3. You're paying a huge premium for color and clarity that you can't see. In real life a well cut F (maybe even G) VS2 is going to look the same to the naked eye as your D VVS. If you've decided that you want the extra quality, that's fine, but know that you're paying extra for rarity not beauty.

4. Your price is fine, but it's not great. You didn't get a "steal" but I don't think you were ripped off. I do think you can do better. Run a pricescope search, contact some vendors.

Now that I've said all that: There are always exceptions to the "rules". If you really love this diamond, and you think it looks great and is full of fire and sparkle, then you're right. All that really matters in the end is that you're pleased with what you have.
