Is this the right stone with the right price?

We just have our first baby, and my wife just got back from the hospital. I want to buy her a new diamond ring as a gift.
I found one piece of loose diamond, here is the information:

I am a newbie, don''t know much about diamond. I did some homework before I found this one. I know the color and the clarity is pretty good for this stone, but I am a little bit worry about the symmetry, I don''t think" Good" is good enough to be the perfect stone.

However, I''d like to know whether it''s OK to buy this piece of store at that price?

3 ct D VVS2 is very fine...less stones to compare prices to. Use the Pricescope your diamond tool at the top.

First, let me say what a fabulous present this is going to be! You are a great husband.

The problem with fancy cuts, is that we can''t tell a whole lot from numbers, we''d need different info. Are you dealing with a local store?

What I can say is, usually, you want the table smaller than the depth. But that is not always an absolute. Also, symmetry would be better at Very good to Excellent.

What I would suggest, to help ensure you get a nice stone, is to look for AGS graded stones. They grade for light performance, so it takes a lot of the guess work out, making it easier. And I would also add, in a well cut stone like an AGS0, you could lower things a bit, easily F-G, and down to VS2 without noticing anything different.

faint is not even the slightest bit noticeable. anyway, it will be difficult to get PSers to tell you if a stone is good without pictures

What about this beauty? This will be a killer stone and you can save yourself some serious cash too...unless the high color/clarity are cultural things you likely won't notice a difference in color once it's set and you certainly won't notice a clarity difference...

Agreed.

This one looks fine by the numbers/stats. I take it you are looking online? Can you get an ASET or Idealscope photo? Because we simply cannot say with certainty it''s a great stone just by this info.

Called seller- Blue Nile, too bad, they don''t have any photos. But they do have 30 days return policy, if I am not happy with store, I can return it within 30 days with no change.

Ok, then I would suggest getting it and taking it to an independant appraiser first thing. If it checks out, voila, you are half way done. If not, might ask one of the vendors who provide pics to search for you.

I know many women like Princess cuts, but this is a major purchase. Has she ever hinted that she likes them? I''d be sort of crushed if I got a 3 carat Princess diamond because I would feel way too guilty to ever tell the giver of such a great gift that I just don''t like them?
