i''m helping my friend pick out a diamond for his gf, and we came across this one that looks promising:

2.7 ct
Depth: 61.6%
Table: 54%
Crown Angle: 34.5
Pavilion Angle: 40.8
Girdle: Medium

i told him he must get the best cut for optimal sparkle, but there are many different angle combinations that yield a low HCA score. if so, how is this different than other optimal combinations?

thanks for

It looks quite good from the numbers. ANything below 2 is worth checking out especially if the stone falls within the overlap of both the GIA ex and AGS id, which this stone does. To look further you will need an idealscope and eyeballed it under different light conditions.

Good Luck

Someone way more knowledgeable will have to answer most of your questions regarding angles, but putting these stats in the HCA the stone comes out to be AGS Ideal and GIA Excellent. That''s a pretty darn good start! Excellent fire, light return, and scintillation all sound like this is going to be a beautiful and sparkly stone. I would accept this stone if my FI offered it to me

the best cut or the nicest looking stone? different people have different preferences. it looks good from the numbers, but must be evaluated in person.

HCA is a rejection/elimination tool, NOT a selection tool. Basically anything that scores below a 2 is worthy of further consideration, but each stone should then be evaluated in person or through IS/ASET images to determine which one is likely to be the best performer.

looks good by the #''s.

this stone is inside both AGS/GIA ideal cut box.

thanks for all the responses!

he has seen the diamond in person and thinks it''s very brilliant, but the problem is he has no basis for comparison. i completely understand because while my own diamond is cut very well based on the HCA and the idealscope, i have seen GIA "very good" cuts that look fairly decent in stores. all tiffany diamonds look similar to me, but i am sure some are better cut than others. it''s hard for lay people to really make the distinction.
