Is this setting too high?

thanks! i really like the vatche....quick question though. Will light return be affected in this setting since the diamond sits so deep in the prongs? There is no space between the cutlet in the ring so I'm worried that since less light will enter the diamond, it won't produce as much brilliance

I like 2.5 or 2.6 mm in width--not too dainty.

They're both really nice! I prefer the trellis, the one from GOG.

I agree!

I like the first one. I have a setting with the prong head like the second, and I really (really) don't love it. The side view is too industrial for me.

do you guys like the first one more than this one?

http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER6641W4JJJ

i guess I'm concerned with not being able to see the side of the diamond with the basket one. will that affect the light flow and ultimately the brilliance of the stone? I also can't judge if its a low or medium height setting. I want the diamond to sit up a bit.

I like the smooth rounded lines of the Gabriel NY one. Looking at the pic of the ering with the wedding band on the GOG site, they both look kinda squarish, while the Gabriel NY one is more rounded. But that's personal preference.

None of the settings will affect the light return or brilliance, as long as you've got a well-cut diamond. Light enters from the top of the diamond; you can test this by putting a piece of paper all around a diamond, like a bezel, and it will still be just as sparkly as without the paper. You can ask for the stone to be set higher or lower, Gabriel & Co. settings are very customizable (I know because I've asked :D). I prefer the setting linked above, the ER6641W4JJJ, to the Vatche setting you linked to, since the Vatche you linked has the same prong style as the tiffany-style 4 prong.

the one on GoG says the width is 5.8 mm. That seems extremely thick to me.

the one from gabrielleny is 2.3mm thick

there are no side views of this setting. do you think you can see the diamond from the side? Its kind of hard to tell

By 'side' do you mean where the shank meets the basket? I imagine it looks similar to the Legato Sleek Line (I'll try to attach a photo from the angle I think you want to see), but you could ask GoG to take a photo of that exact setting from the angle you want to see.

I like them both but I like the band on the first one better and the head on the second one better. I'm pretty sure they will both
take a 1 carat stone.

No apparently it holds a .75 carat. They do make it for 1 carat sizes though

Work with GOG to get Gabriel & Co to customize it - they make each setting custom for each ring, so I'm sure it won't be an issue.

I think I have my mind pretty set on this one:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/setting/ER6611W4JJJ/

Its a nice blend of modern and classic. My only concern is the band is 2.9mm at its widest point, tapering to about 2.7mm on the sides and 2.5mm on the bottom.

Is that too wide to wear with a wedding band? Would I have to get a wide wedding band 2.5+mm for it to look right next to the engagement ring?

I'm a little late to the party, but OH how my heart beats for the
MM Petite Torchiere setting.....
You know GOG has videos of some of their settings, right?

Why not check a few of those out?
I like how you can see the rings from ALL angles.....
and see how the stones look in the settings etc....

Did you go through some of those ?

edited to add....
the petite torchiere is set with a .64 carat diamond and is just stunning... to me, anyway.
In no WAY does that size diamond look "stupid" in that gorgeous setting....
LOVE LOVE LOVE

I think the 2.9mm isn't too wide, and will be less likely to cause any issues if your future fiancee uses her hands a lot (gardening, working out, etc.). I think there would be many, many wedding band options with that setting that wouldn't have to match the width exactly to look great. Anything below would, I think, look good with that setting (just pulling examples from G&Co site since it's easy):

http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/AN8387W44JJ (bezel set, could be alternating shapes or all rounds)
http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/AN8373W44JJ (channel set)
http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/AN6021-7W44JJ (bead set? not sure what this is called, but it's pretty!)
http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/AN8108W44JJ (prong set--could also have shared-prong setting)

Edited to add: I forgot I was also going to say, I have a fairly small finger size (5.25) and I wear 3 rings that are each 2mm, for a total of 6mm on that finger, so I don't think pairing a 2.9mm e-ring with a 2.5 or even 3mm band would be too wide. You can see my rings (and Ame's, too, she also wears 6mm worth of rings) on this thread on the first page: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/show-me-size-5-5-25-or-5-5-please.175619/

That's a lovely setting!

Agreed! 2.9 to 2.7 will be perfect. A lot of women do not like dainty settings (me included). This one will be durable and it'll have a lot of hand presence.

Here is what the good people at Good Old Gold said when comparing the Vatche X Prong and the Gabrielle X Prong:

"The Vatche setting is 4mm right next to the stone and tapers to 3.5mm on the side and 2.75mm in the back.

When compared to the rounded edges of the Vatche ring, the Gabriel ring is more squared off.

The thickest height of the Vatche ring is 2.3mm, just about the same as the Gabriel ring.

The Gabriel ring has an overall more delicate look and would be better suited, size-wise, to your girlfriend’s hand."

Ooh I like all the ones rubybeth posted over the classic "tiffany". I guess because the head is more integrated with the rest of the setting, and there is more design to it.

If you are getting a ideal cut diamond, having a more closed in setting shouldn't affect brillance. However some people feel a higher setting, or a setting with a halo makes the diamond look bigger.

But I think any of the choices above with a 1 carat diamond will look beautiful, and Vatche is a more of a "designer" name than Stuller

yea i'm putting a 1 carat Solasfera in the setting so the X-Prong that I'm looking at shouldn't hinder it's brilliance. thanks for the reply!

I would avoid eBay settings for an engagement ring because of the amount that the ring will be worn. It might be cheap because it's hollow.

If you need a more 'budget' option, I am sure GoG could help find something nice for you. They have access to a lot of settings that aren't listed on their site. I've read many times than Unique Settings of New York are good: http://www.uniquesettings.com/ (not sure if GoG can get these, but I'm guessing they could)

i like that this Gabriel x prong doesn't have a bar running across the side of the diamond (connecting the prongs) like all the other X prong settings. Lets you see more of the diamond IMO

FYI, i just purchased the Gabriel X Prong from GoG and sent them my diamond for setting. I'll post pics once I get the ring back from them

Yay, excited to see it!! :appl:
