Hey Guys! I just received my modified CAD images from WF. Thanks to all you helpful PSers I realized the setting was way too high and chunky in my first CAD images. You can see the pics in the original thread. The height was 10.5 mm from the bottom of the shank to the table of the diamond!!

So I asked WF to make it lower and with less metal.

The modified version is 8.9mm high. I feel like there is still quite a lot of metal. The center stone is 2.53ct. The height of the stone alone is 5.41mm. So, that leads to my question......how high is too high? Does anyone have a solitaire that''s 8-9mm high? What do you think of the modified head?

Here''s the pic I sent WF as an example of a head I like...

And the modified CADs....

Not sure, but I like your user name :)

hard to tell from cads.
Ask them to do one where the culet is just above the band but keep in mind that some of the stone side view will be covered that way.
The technical term would be a low base med tiffany head.

Storm, thanks for you reply! When you say it would effect the side view of the stone do you mean I won''t be able to see the cutlet from the profile? Do you have a picture?

I''m not an expert but one thing I have learned from looking at lots of CAD images and then the finished article is that the CAD always looks like there is too much metal. It''ll definitely shrink down in the finished version but I do agree, even allowing for that, the head does look a little too heavy on the metal.

Personally I don''t care for the whole head. I don''t like the narrow angle where it meets the band. Maybe this was your preference but it does put the bottom of the head up high which adds to seeing a lot of metal and having the table of the stone high as well.

For my taste - waayyyy too high.

Thanks everyone! The lower stuller head looks just right. I like the thinner prongs. I wonder if WF could replicate it.

Do you think I should come down on the height as well? I prefer a medium to high setting, but I don''t want it to be over the top.

yes they can, tell them what I said above and have them do a cad.. it will drop the total height a few mm.
If they have questions send them the link...

+1

I had the diamonds for an eternity setting* from WF a while ago and although I loved the diamond band I hated that 4 prong head with a passion. I felt it really let the ring down; looked cheap really. I spoke to WF a lot about changing the head and evenually changed setting to the new tiffany replica. All this started with hating the uninspiring head. 0.02

*This looks very much like your setting except mine was a full eternity.

ETA: Considering you are going custom, why not put the euro shank on it? While you will get used to the gentle scuffing of the diamonds, it is annoying if the head turns a lot. I was forever turning the diamond back to centre and I did not notice now much it had annoyed me until I moved to a plain plat comfort fit setting.

Wow Steel! Thanks so much for the info. It''s good to hear from someone who has 1st hand experience with this setting. Which head would you have chosen if you could do it all over? I like the look of the 4 straight prongs but I don''t want it to appear cheap. Who knew this would be so complicated

Could they do a euro shank with a 3/4 eternty?

I do think that the new design looks much better than the first... I don''t know how high "too high" is, it''s a matter of personal taste. How high is the culet from your finger?

Well this is the thing, wf couldn't (at the time) offer me an alternative I liked, even my own options were a 'make do'.

It is funny DH couldnt see why I hated the 4 prong I had he said he liked it...but once I changed to the tiffany he said he saw now what I disliked in the standard 4 prong and agreed with me

.

Ask WF about the euro, that would def be a do over for me, def euro shank.

Pictures to follow.. this is how my reset came about. I started with the head you want and asked for new options.

As there was limited room to peg in a new head I thought this would be a make do choice but wf said it was a no-go.

They suggested this head....

Or this as a cheaper option...

I never discussed prong options... so perhaps they might have some ideas for you.

If I were going 4 prong custom I would have one of these please, just with a euro shank

...

(Even without the diamonds on the prongs, the shape is much more robust but still sleek and compliments the diamond

Steel, that last setting is gorgeous!!

Where did you find it? One of the problems I''ve run into is finding a head that will allow my w-ring to sit flush. It sounds like you went through a lot to change your head! You''re new setting is absolutely beautiful though!!

Tuckins, I think the cutlet would be 3.5mm above my finger. Is that high?

As I said my new set is the tiff replica from wf but if I were to risk pave that stunner from pearlmans would be 1st pick - I think it was Michael B?

Sitting flush was a requirement of mine too... speak to wf they are best placed to help. But do consider the euro shank!

Thanks Steel! On your diamonds for an eternity setting did you have the stock head that it comes with or did you get a custom head? According to WF, the stock head doesn''t sit flush with a w-ring.

I had stock and it fit with all the bands I have. Sorry I just looked for pics but I changed laptops since the reset and can''t find any...

Was it this one?

Ok, I went digging for you. I snapped this before i packed the ring off, just for posterity so it is not a glamour shot, but it shows the head ok.

On closer examination, it seems to me that your custom head is like the stock setting but with the prongs continued to a sharper longer fixing where it meets the ring - hence it it taller. I think it will show off the diamond in the same way. I just didn''t like it.

After reset, with sleek 6 prongs.

Steel, thanks for hunting down the pic of your old setting. I wonder why WF told me the stock head wouldn''t sit flush with a w-ring.

Oh, I love your new setting!!

Ditto - was it your other thread that a number of ppl suggested the Legato head? That would me my choice too - it will add some more elegance that is currently lacking imho.
