Is this setting too contemporary to have a halo?

Hi Everyone,

I found this setting at a local jeweler recently while having a stone replaced in my current ring and I really like it, but I''m not sure of this style and whether it would be considered gaudy or tacky. Can you guys weigh in w/your opinions on this? Sorry, the picture is a little blurry, I had to take it w/my phone while I was at the store, so I''ll try to describe it better.

It''s sort of a contemporary setting, but it has this halo around the stone, as you see. The band has straight cut baguettes almost all the way around (there''s just a little bit of plain band at the very bottom, which I like). The baguettes are surrounded on either side by small, prong set diamonds, and then the halo has bead set diamonds around it. I always thought the halo setting was reserved for a more classic type of look with a pave or prong set band, or plain band until I saw this, but I can''t find anything similar (and I''ve searched!). What do you guys think? Is this setting too strange of a combination to be considered classy?

My current setting has round, prong set diamonds that go about halfway down each side of the band, as does the wedding band. I''d be replacing the emerald cut that''s in it with my radiant stone; my stone is a little larger, but the jeweler says it will work very well if I don''t mind it sitting slightly higher in the setting, and I sure don''t! Other than that, it would look pretty much the same. So your opinions would be most appreciated before I change my current setting and spend lots more money! Thanks, everyone.

Hi GQ and welcome to PS

My personal opinion is the setting is nice but does seem to have a lot going on. when I think of "classic" i think of more simple timeless type settings that have and will continue to stand the test of time. many of the settings that are popular today are gorgeous but I wonder if 20 years from now we''ll look back and say that was so 2008. that said, if you love the setting and want something you can enjoy now that go for it. I ended up going for a halo setting myself although I don''t consider it really classic the way I would a solitaire or tradional 3 stone ring. I got it b/c I loved it though.

I think it''s a very pretty setting,if you REALLY like it. I personally think it''s a little big and busy for my taste. The only person who can decide if they really love it is you though.

I agree with the others. Certainly it is very pretty, but it does seem to have a lot going on. I think of classic the way mrs. salvo does too. I wouldn''t call this one classic, but that doesn''t mean you can''t love it.

Mrssalvo, Amzizzle, and Kelli: Thanks so much for the opinions and advice, guys! Yes, I guess it does have a lot going on, and I kinda knew that when I first saw it, so the only way I can defend myself is "Diamond Hypnosis"! He he! I think my IQ level drops a bit whenever I get around sparkly things in clean, shiny jewelry cases...

"many of the settings that are popular today are gorgeous but I wonder if 20 years from now we'll look back and say that was so 2008."

Mrssalvo: This is exactly what I was concerned about and you pretty much hit the nail on the head for me! This is not what I want from my setting (i.e. "That's so 2008", or in my current case, " so 2003"), but I may be in that position already, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because I went w/a radiant instead of a more classic shape way back when. I guess I'm just looking for something new, and since it'd be too difficult (translation: expensive!) to replace my center stone, I'm grasping at settings. Gosh, do I sound ungrateful?! I have a beautiful diamond, from a wonderful husband, and I'm looking for more?! Yikes... Thank God for this forum so I can feel (somewhat) normal!

Can you guys point me to some links or threads that have some great settings for radiants? Maybe that would help! Again, my current setting has five round, prong set diamonds on either side of the band, and matching wedding bands. Thanks for your time & responses, everyone!
