Hey everyone, I'm honing in on a round brilliant diamond and wanted to get some opinions from the experts.

The diamond is GIA certified as 3.01 ct, I/SI2, triple-X, no fluoro

Measurements are: 9.16 x 9.22 x 5.77 mm
Depth=62.8%
Table=57%
Crown angle=35.5 degrees
Crown height=15.5%
Pavilion angle=41.0 degrees
Pavilion depth=43.5%
Star length=50%
Lower half=75%
Girdle=Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted, 3.5%
Culet=none

So, my jeweler says this diamond is awesome...looks like an SI1, absolutely no visible inclusions...no visible light yellow tints, etc. I haven't seen it yet.

At this point, I have 2 main concerns.

First, I entered the specs into the HCA and got the following results: Total Score=4.0 (Good). Light return, fire, & scintillation=Good. Spread=Very Good. Lower than I hoped for....but then I read somewhere that if your pavilion angle is exactly 41 (which it is), that is the most important factor....so perhaps the diamond really looks better than a typical 4.0. Is it possible that this diamond looks awesome, despite this low score?

Second question relates to price. I'm searching Blue Nile and seeing price ranges on 3ct, I/SI2, XXX diamonds ranging from 26-32K. My jeweler is saying that the price for this particular diamond is 36K and that she's only charging me $1,000 above their cost. They buy directly some diamond cutters. Is that price fair, esp. since the HCA scores are coming in at a 4.0.

I feel like I'm paralyzed in minutia at this point. Just looking to hear from this group what they think about the diamond specs and the cost? I know I need to see the diamond in person to make a final decision, but I'm hoping to screen out duds up front if possible to save me time in the jewelry store. All diamonds looks great under the bright lights.

Thanks everyone,
Larry

36K seems high because I see some nice SI1s for less than that. But the variance of prices goes up for high carat weights.

HCA score doesn't factor into pricing. Pricing is based on carat, clarity, colour, branding, report-assigned cut grade, how much they paid their manufacturers/cutters/suppliers, how common/popular/available that sort of stone is, where you are, how much rent the vendor owes that month, whether it's a busy or slower time of year, how much the vendor likes you/wants your business, how much it's rained so far that year...

A "good" SI2 (unlucky SI1, or SI2 with easily prongable inclusions...) could very well go for more than an "average" SI2 - and who knows what the BN SI2s you're comparing to actually look like! Ditto Julie, there's a bigger variance w/ prices for bigger stones - I'd strongly recommend withholding both judgment and obsession over HCA score and other minutiae until you go see it in-person :bigsmile:

Hi Larry

HCA score has nothing to do with the price, HCA tool is especially helpful filtering the right stone, not accurate tool though.
I think stone if appears clear to naked eye than its good, Since HCA score 4, you may have to look at the stone before spending
such kind of money.

Price seems to be okay to me, but I am not sure about they only making $1k, all these tricks might be just to make you believe that
you are getting steel deal from her, I think you should look around more and compare the stones online, I checked and found stones

Online companies give prices which is hard to beat & with return policy guaranteed, its worth trying :)

Good Luck
