Picked up my fiancee engagement ring from the designer yesterday, bought it from GOG loose, regret not having it set by them originally. I had a heck of a time finding a B&M to set it, another story at another time. I had the stone set in a 6 prong (platinum) prongs and 18K white gold shank. After taking it home I pulled out my 20x magnifying glass and went to the bathroom to secretly examine the work. Can only imagine what my girl was thinking locking myself in the bathroom all evening. But after examining the ring more closely I noticed the the shank says 18K PLAT, I''m guessing the shank is 18K white gold plated? Is that typical of 18K white gold rings to be plated? I also can''t find the GIA inscription on my stone, I''m guessing it''s being hidden by the prongs or could the inscription been removed during the mounting process?

platinum, not plated.

18K PLAT means there is both 18K gold and platinum in the ring, which is consistent with what you ordered. The GIA inscription is very small and difficult to find with a loupe. Usually a microscope is used to view it. Do you have an inclusion plot for your diamond? That''s an easier way to identify it. An independent appraiser could also help you.

Thanks for explanation on the 18K PLAT. that make me feel much better. The stone is IF, so there is no inclusion maps on my report. And don''t see any with my inexperienced eyes with a 10x loupe. Yes, I''m planning to take it in for another re-appraisal after Christmas. But I know I will be searching for that inscription until then. I was able to make out the GIA numbers when it was loose with my 20x magnify glass, now I don''t see it all. Could a Tiffany style prong be large enough to cover it up?

I''ve also heard that the inscription has some black coloring on it that makes it easier to read; however, the high heat of the setting process can burn off the coloring. Without the coloring, it''s much harder to see the inscription. Maybe you could ask a jeweler to help you find it? I don''t know the answer to your question about whether prongs can cover the inscription, sorry.

hgau999, you inspired me to use my 10x loupe to try to find the GIA inscription on my own diamond, and I found it! It''s so tiny, and is about the same width as one of my prongs. I have a pretty standard 4-prong peg setting that you can see in my avatar. So in my opinion, the inscription could certainly be under a prong as well.
