So I just posted (read here) about doing a custom similar to a leon to get the ring of my dreams.

After reading the comments, I convinced the boy to email Leon and Mark at ERD for some quotes so we could get an idea of what we can do for the money.

BF mentioned in the email a particular Leon ring I liked, and Leon emailed back!

He offered to come down on the ring to $10,000, just above our budget. I love the ring, and have only two concerns:
- I was hoping for a extremely rectangular cushion (ratio around 1.2 or 1.3)
- I wanted something where the wedding band would sit nearly flush.

That being said, I do love love love this ring.

Think we should go for it? Think it would be unreasonable to ask for $9,000?

One last thought, it was wonderfully pointed out to me that something similar to what I want is available at ERD
(thanks diamondseeker2006!)
- looked at the Mark T collection and liked the fat guy or liane ring...

Should I do that with a more rectangular cushion? Only downfall: there is no way we could get a stone as good as the stone in the Leon ring.

Sorry for the long, all over the place post...
So excited that the whole engagement/ring thing is coming sooner than I thought that I can hardly contain myself...

I know PSers love pictures...
I really appreciate any input(good or bad).

This one is the diamond by itself, a little worried about the bowtie effect

I am confused. Do you already have the stone?

Have you decided against having your local family friend make it for you?

Are you between buying the ready made from Leon or having a custom ring made by ERD?

Both of these vendors produce wonderful pieces. Leon never recommends putting a band against the pave so consider that with either ring.

The Leon is a gorgeous piece!

I love that ring. A custom Leon without the wait? I''d totally jump at it! I don''t know much about cushions but I really like the chunkiness of that one. Good luck!

Are you able to go in and view the ready-made Leon ring before you purchase? I would make extra certain that that is the stone for you before you have it sized. You could absolutely find a stone that''s more rectangular and have Leon create the setting for you within a similar budget, you''d just have to go to the trouble of finding your stone and waiting for the setting to be made. It''s doable, and you''d have the stone that you wanted by the time all was said and done. I don''t buy into the fact that you couldn''t find a stone better than the one in the Leon ring. You absolutely could

, it''s just a matter of being patient and working with the right vendor. I think Mark could get you a more rectangular stone at a great price.

Hm ... well, a quickie search indicates that cushions with comparable stats. of F, VS1 in the same weight category are going for a rough average of $4,000 (if I chave any of the info. wrong, my apologies). My understanding is that an intricate Leon of that caliber would run another $4,000 or $5,000 (possibly less if you go through ERD). It doesn''t look like you''re really saving money on this, and like you are sacrificing two things that matter to you - the square ratio you were hoping for, and the ability to wear a band flush. Would it be worth it to you to sacrifice those two things to have it sooner?

P.S. - I think it would totally be worth seeing whether it can be brought within budget, a la, "Mr. Mege, that is such a generous offer, but the thing is, our budget is X" if you decide to go for it .....

I would wait and try to find exactly what you want. I know it is hard to wait ( I am the worst!!) but you will have this ring for a long time! It really will be worth the wait in the long run!

That price is crazy low for an F VS2 nice cushion...I have no idea where you are finding that price, but realistically a 1 carat + F VS2, well cut cushion will run you well above $6,000.

In fact, here is literally the exact same stone practically on GOG's website for $6900:

Given my general lack of tech skills, I could well be misusing the search tool: switching the preferences to cushion and F VS1, leaving the pre-set weight considerations as they are, I get 7 pages of potentials starting in the high $3000's, linger in the $4000 range for 5 pages, and then jump up to a high of $6686. Weirdly, the one you listed didn't even pop up for me ....

So, my advice should probably be taken with a grain of salt re: pricing, but I'll stand by the rest of it; does the ring as-it-is appeal enough to overcome the lack of those two elements?

I think the biggest issue for me is that I''m terribly impatient. I''m getting to the point where I just want to be engaged to my wonderful man.

This ring is pretty darn close to what I want. I''m gonna see if BF can get the GIA cert. from Leon so I can get a better idea if it''s worth the money.

My newest thought is that maybe I can get a custom unique band to wear separately...

I think you are...when I run a search limiting it to cushions that are F-G and VS1-VS2, I get exactly two hits, both of which are close in price to the one I posted, but the specs aren't as nice. I'm also only doing in-house stones, because those cushions are VERY different than many of the run of the mill poorly cut ones that are out there.

So Mel, I think the stone itself is worth about $6900 ($6600 from GOG if you paid in cash), so even $10,000 for that ring considering the work that went into it isn't a bad price at all...

Yeooof. Thanks for the heads-up, Neatfreak - I''ll fool around with the search tool and try to figure out where the disparity lies.

Mel047 - I think there''s another Leon bride on the board who just went through a similar kind of a thing - Bem3231. I believe she''s opting for a stand-alone band. It''s a beautiful look!

I love that ring too! And see it often....I think it is actually a good price, and personally wouldn''t ask for it any lower (he already came down for you)....the cost of workmanship must have been pretty high for a ring that great!!!!

I love it. I''m not that savvy about specs to comment but is Leon holding this ring pending your decision? You might be better off trying to do so now that this baby is all out in the open.
Gosh... I love it ( wait I said that already)
