Hi all,
I bought my diamond ring online at Brilliance.com. The ring looks really pretty. To be sure I got the correct diamond, I went to a local appraisal in my hometown (Seattle). When I when to an appraisal, I handed over my ring including the appraisal from the retailer. Approximate 25 min later he gave me an appraisal which I think he cut/paste all the dimensions (crown angle, pavilion depth….) from GIA’s website. I also asked him how did he get all the dimensions, and he responded by measuring it by hand. He than input the crown angle into a software that calculated the depth, table….. Is it possible to to get and exact matches w/ my GIA report? Measure it by hand? I also asked him to point out my inclusions on my diamond to see if it matches w/ my report. The inclusion in his appraisal was totally different then the on my report, but he said the diamond I have is the one correspond to my report. Should I take his words for it? Do you guy think this appraisal just trying to scam me? The appraisal place I went to is North America Gemological Laboratory http://www.na-gl.com/, (https://www.pricescope.com/appraisers_WA.aspx). Please please give me some advice on this.

Thank you all!

The appraiser might have measured by hand and then in an effort not to create confusion for you, chose to use the dimensions provided by the measurements given by GIA. It might have been to make his report show the agreement he felt was present in his work and the work done by GIA. Now, it could be something sinister that is going on, but why would you think that was the case? Did the appraiser do something which led you to believe he had not done his own work? Did the appraiser say or do something which made no sense? Do you like the diamond or do you plan to use the appraisal in order to return it? What is motivating you to question the events? We''re curious.

I will tell you that clarity plots often do not match very well from one person''s drawing to the next. I have had appraisers who felt they had to make every inclusion a large red solid object and others who lightly drew the same thing as if it were an open field with only a red border. There is no uniformity to the drawings various appraisers make. Besides this, the placement of inclusions often is different from one appraiser to the next because reflections are not plotted in most cases and one must guess which inclusion is the real image and which ones are the not to be plotted reflections. I have also seen many GIA plots which simply are poorly drawn and do not match the diamond I am being shown. In those cases, I just make my own clarity plot without regard to the GIA''s plot. It is confusing, but unless the clarity grade turns out wrong, the plot makes little difference. Of course, if I see a dangerous inclusion which was not in the original plot, then I have to bring this to the consumer''s attention. It is a rare event.

If pout to the test, I can measure with quite a high degree of accuracy the details of a diamond''s cut by hand. I rarely do it anymore, but for over 20 years I did hundreds per month with some very simple hand held tools. Many appraisers still do it this way as the Sarin is a costly item.

It sounds like a breakdown in communication between you and the appraiser more than anything else.
Maybe give him a call and discuss your concerns?

Thank you mr. oldminer!!!

I thought the appraisal would be the judge of the diamond for me. I wanted to verify if the diamond I got from the retailer is the same because I''m still w/i my grace period so I can still return it if it is necessary.

I had a hard for me to believe a tiny thing this size when measure by hand and you get the exact measurement as a computer.

I really like the diamond but in order for me to know if the retailer doesn''t gave me a different one therefore I rely on the appraisal to give me some criticism about it. Instead the exactly same details on my report. What is the point of getting appraise? Only for insurance purposes.

I have used that appraiser twice and he was spot on with his appraisals versus what the GIA and AGS reports said (two different stones/rings).

I don''t know much about appraisals, but I have ordered two diamonds from brilliance.com and they were both exactly spot on with the certificates. I don''t think you should have much to worry about, they are a very reliable company from what I''ve read, heard, and experienced. I doubt they''d send you something other than what you bought.

I agree with Karl. Communication is key. Consumers go to appraisers for different reasons and concerns.
Questions should be asked by the appraiser before any appraisal work begins.
Purpose of the appraisal should always be established.

If you truly love the diamond and you have a GIA lab report that clearly belongs to your diamond,
you should have no worries.

But talk to the appraiser to put your mind at ease.
