I found a diamond ring on ebay.
Is this good to bid?
I will link the image and certification.

the description of the itam is
"Brand New 0.51 CTW LASER Inscribed EGL Certified Round Diamond Engagement Ring E-F/VS2-SI1, Appraised At $4,070.00 "

how is this ring? Is this really certificated by EGL USA?

I asked to seller about it and he said

"We only provide a gem id card with the laser inscribed on the diamond girdle, it costs a lot more to get the certificate and we never had a problem with selling our diamonds using the grading system thru the gem card. I never mentioned anything about complete certification form EGL, nobody on ebay provides it except for 3 rd party certifications which are absolutely misleading. we get grading done by our own staff as well as a Reputed company like EGL. you can be sure what you see is what you get, it is an excellent price for the diamond of this quality, we are liquidating for the year and so the reason for selling it cheap, otherwise we wait and sell retail here, "

p.s This is $799+shipping...

Pass on it. The seller clearly states "EGL certified" and then goes on to tell you he never said anything about the diamond being completely EGL certified, and in fact it is not? Sounds more than fishy. And even if the diamond was EGL certied, their gradings can be questionable. Also, I have never seen a grading like that. How can there be range for the color and clarity. I mean, how can you decide what a fair price is if these 2 qualities are in question? Also, doesn't that price seem out of line?

Wow, I would steer clear of that stone...a clarity range? I''m a newby, but after reviewing literally hundreds of stones over the past 2 months, I''ve never seen a clarity range.

I''d submit a copy of that "ID Card" to the EGL and ask them if it''s really theirs and not a forgery. Even then, as Jazmine posted, an EGL-graded stone could be misleading. That''s what the feedback on PS is, and that''s what I''m hearing from many respected online jewelers (James Allen, Whteflash, etc.)

Im also a newbie. The ranges in color and clarity sound strange to me. But on EGLs website you can put in the report number and pull up the report Its the same as on the card. I don''t trust too many people and I''d be especially weary of buying a diamond off ebay. (too risky in my opinion) Is there a return policy?? WF seems to have plenty of .5ct stones - Im sure you can find something there at a similar price.

Big red flag here. it is obviously not EGL certified, his comments are misleading ,the seller says that the diamond is graded by his own staff as well as by EGL but he cannot provide a complete certificate

- he is contradicting himself. However some properly graded EGL stones can be good deals and accurately graded in some cases, it doesn't seem as if this one has been graded by EGL at all. I would keep looking, there are too many good and reasonably priced stones out there to settle for one that may be dubious. I hope this helps you and welcome also

I cannot comment on whether the ring is any good or not. I dont'' have enough info. I do have a comment though. When there are split grades listed, it usually means that the diamond was graded in the setting. They cannot for certain nail down a color and clarity grade once the diamond is set, so they hedge their bets and split grade it. That is done all the time by IGI. I know this by perusing jewelry cases and seeing the cards from IGI.

Secondly, $799 seems not all that unreasonable a price. The appraisal is a joke. It would depend on whether or not the diamond is what they say it is. Just my .02.

HI Woo,
Based on prices I see here in NYC it''s not possible, at current price levels, to buy an F/SI1 1/2 carat diamond for $799- even if it''s badly cut.
SO, whatever the grade or EGL I use actual market prices to judge if an offer is valid.
In this case we must assume the diamond is not F/SI1

In my opinon it is extrmely important for a seller to be very clear and honestly represent their wares.

What is this?

If someone felt inspired to put a funky inscription on the diamonds' girdle... so what ? At present it is graded by these UGL guys, not EGL... There is no way to tell what the grades given by EGL could have been.

The 'Est. Retail Rep. Value' is obviously the current price, not the markings on the lab report... I'll take that is part of the graphic design of the little blue card,

If you like it in person a feel that it is worth the cash relative to other diamonds, that's it. But you may want to leave the grades or value estimate on the UGL card out of that decission.

Is the other picture of the actual item you will receive or a representative picture? Big difference, really. For once, it has nothing in common with the picture on the blue card. I wonder what got the prongs gathered like that in the UGL photo? Could it be that the stone in that picture was oval? That doesn' fit the diameter numbers... who knows... The whole thing is weird. Why would the other ring picture also carry an add (or label?) of EGL USA? Strange. I hope that wasn't gathered from somewhere else on the web - if so, you are buying a very expensive bitmap!

Ok.. maybe I got carried away a bit. I have not seen the stone - it is just the two pictures that seem out of sinc.

You can ceck if the respective EGL report ever existed by cheching the registration number on EGL's website HERE. I could not get it to work - which may also mean that ID number does not correspond to any EGL USA report.

I''ve never seen a clarity range.
Split grades are given for mounted diamonds by whichever labs grade mounted stones.

If UGL graded the object in the picture on the blue card, then that was a mounted diamond and this explains the formulation of the grades.

I am not sure if this is general practice.

Hmmm, the same information (or lack thereof) comes up when you type the report number into the EGL search engine: http://www.eglusa.com/customerlogin.html

So I guess this really is a mini-report from EGL. It has the UGS appraisal value listed at the bottom as well. But why wouldn't it even list the table and depth? This is really no help at all.

By the way, the diameter is small for a half carat stone. It will look smaller. This stone has nearly a 66% depth (probably why it isn't listed). To get the depth you divide the smaller number (3.20) by the average of the two bigger numbers (4.87 x 4.84). Run, don't walk, from a stone with a depth that high!!!

Here's a 0.43 G VS2 ideal cut H&A stone that has a bigger diameter than the stone you are looking at, a GIA report, and costs $895 if you mention the Price Scope discount to the vendor.

And here's a 0.41 F SI1 that is an A Cut Above H&A stone with an AGS report that costs $900 with the discount that has nearly the same diameter as your stone.

If you have $900 to spend, I would not recommend spending it on a sketchy deal for a stone that looks like it is in the small 0.42-0.43 carat range instead of the half carat size you are paying for. Get an ideal cut, 0.40-0.45 stone in the F-G, VS2-SI1 range, or get a larger ideal cut in the I-J SI1-SI2 range.

Edited to add: I just noticed this stone is $800, not $900. If that's your max budget, White Flash also has an F SI2, an H VS2, and a J VS1 in the low 0.40 carats (with similar diameters to your stone) for less than $800. Use the search by cut feature under the Prices heading here. White Flash is the only vendor that is coming up with a variety of well cut stones 0.40 and bigger for under $900 (Winfield's has two under $1k, and then everyone else is starting above $1k).

One more I found:

0.45 F VS2 H&A with GIA report for $952
