We''d need a bit more information in order to provide a meaningful answer for you, twenny.

Has the diamond been graded by a reputable lab such as AGS or GIA? If so, and if it''s well cut, the J color should face up fine.

You''ve listed the cut as "ideal", but please be aware that this term is likely an anecdotal one and not necessarily meaning equivalent with an AGS0 ideal grade.

Can you get more information about the stone? If it doesn''t have a grading report, you might try having an appraiser look at the stone before you commit to purchase (or else negotiate a favorable return-for-refund period). An independent appraiser would be able to produce a Sarin or similar measurement report to help determine the cut quality of the stone.

I actually forgot to ask (shame on me)if the stone was certified but I later sent an email and this was the response. ( I know its not alot of details.)

My Question

Kelly I had one more question, is the diamond certified?

Her reply

You bet it is! J Good question. I will give you the certification along with the appraisals when you come to pick up the finished ring.

Also when looking at all the diamonds she had I first noticed the J looked a little warm compared to the others but then we went outside in the sun and I couldn''t tell them apart. In fact the guy I was with picked the J as the better stone.

Twenny, this is no small purchase for most people, so I''d urge you to get a bit more information before committing to the sale.

One major question - *who* is it ''certified'' by? By a reputable lab like AGS/GIA, or by "Joe''s I-said-it''s-a-J grading lab/pizza joint?" It''s important for you to know that EGL is a typically a bit more lenient in grading, and EGL-Israel and/or IGI even moreso."

Also, please don''t be mislead by the world ''certified''. Certification isn''t a warranty; it''s a (presumably) professional opinion as to the elements of a diamond. The expertise of the person/lab issuing the opinion has a tremendous impact on the market value of the stone. It doesn''t change the stone''s beauty one way or the other, but it does impact market value.

You''ve seen the diamond, and it sounds as though you''re happy with what you saw, so that''s good. It would be my recommendation to make sure you have a decent return (meaning refund, not just exchange) period and take the stone to an independent appraiser (not a competing jeweler) to make sure you''re getting what you should be for the value. Keep in mind that the appraisal will be much more meaningful when the stone is loose, so it might be a good idea to have this done before having the stone set into a setting.

You should get a photo copy of the certificate. She seems a little sketchy about it since she didn''t mention which company it was certified by AND said you get it after it was set, which means you can''t accurately get it appraised (they can''t weight it or see what''s under the prongs). Ask her for the certificate now and decide whether or not you are happy with it the stone before they set it.

Ok I just emailed her and asked her to email me the certificate Ill keep you posted.

well i got the email and it looks like its a mom and pop shop. its from Professional Gem Sciences out of chicago IL

That''s an independent lab and there are hundreds of them around. GIA and AGS are the respected ones around here. When you get the email post the information. My preference would be to only buy a stone with GIA or AGS.

Here they are

If you run the numbers through the Holloway Cut Advisor it comes up with a 4. Not the best score. The aim is to get a 2 or less. It's pretty deep, too, and facing up a little smaller than it should.

Before I saw your post I ran them through GIAs Facetware and rated the diamond was rated excellent

So does this mean the diamond is not very good. With all you experts out there with all info you have what would you expect me to pay for it. FYI I already own the diamond but im waiting for the ring to be finished...

Sorry, I am not expert. If you are happy with your purchase and feel you are paying a fair price then that''s all that matters. It''s a lovely setting and will make a nice ering.

Does anybody have input on the value of the stone?

why don''t you tell us?

4600 is that ok... They originally quoted me 6999 which is ludicrous.

the lower price is not crazy bad - but personally, I think you are paying too much without reliable certification.
For all you know, the diamond could really be L SI2 if certified by GIA/AGS --> do you see where I'm going with this?

are you able to cancel this order and start again with a more reputable company?
personally, I would not be content with a "good" HCA for an ering stone.
But I am not your intended

I believe I have 30 days once the ring is picked up. I did a little research on the gem lab and seems to pan out well I guess Im torn on what to do.

Here is some info on PGS it seems promising https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/review-of-professional-gem-sciences.48599/
