Is this engagement ring a good buy?

New to this game and just getting my feet wet. I found a private party in the classifieds whom is selling this ring for $3,500. Can someone please give me their opinion on this, as I think it sounds excellent. Thanks in advance! Viewable on EGL''s website www.eglusa.com under this diamond number 76630302D. Here are the basics: Round, 2.21ct, K-L, SI2, Table 60.4%, Dimensions 8.11x8.1x5.32, Flourescence None. I am planning on proposing within the next few weeks.

WOW! What a deal for a 2.21 ct diamond. Have you seen the diamond? IMO, I would be weary purchasing such a big diamond for that price. It seems to be too good to be true.
There are not a lot of specs to go by to tell if it''s a good diamond or not. Will you be getting any papers with the ring?

Have you actually seen the stone in real life? You can probably see some yellow in the stone with a K-L.

It''s definetly going to have a yellow tint. And an EGL could mean it''s not necessarily even K-L. I would be very cautious.

not to mention that a K-L EGL grade may grade even lower if done my GIA or AGS...

you are certainly getting a discount because it is second hand, but what i have noticed and heard many times on here about diamonds is this: You get what you pay for. It is likely that there may be some kind of yellowish / brownish tint that might ''cheapen'' the diamond for your girl. Also as an SI-2 with nothing more specific, you may have visible specs of carbon right under the table or something similiar. Also, we don''t know what kind of cut it has or what kind of light performance it has. If size is of primo importance to you go for it... but there are too many unanswered questions here for my tastes. I would try and view it before purchase if possible to get a better idea or send it to an appraiser to actually test its light performance / get a second opinion on the color and inclusions.

Ignore the "$15,000" appriased value from EGL... its pretty much useless.

it does sound a little too good to be true if it''s a nice looking stone. is there anyway the seller will meet you at an independent appraiser to verify the cert. and give you all the measurements?

Thanks for the responses so far. I have seen the diamond, it has two white "feathers", not huge, but noticable. The seller has EGL paperwork. My purchase condition was that we go to the EGL office (downtown LA) and verfiy the diamond. If it all checks out, I will buy. Does this seem good to you guys. I was concerned with the porportions of the cut, don''t know if they are good or not.

there''s just no way to know with out more detail which an qualified appraiser who will run the tests, will give you. That said, $3500 is a amazing price. most diamonds that size would cost significantly more. The numbers can only do so much and your eyes must do the rest. Does it sparkle and look good to you?

I still wouldn''t put down any $$ w/out an appraiser being in the middle of the transaction.

ok, i did a quick search here and found a few diamonds with your specks. they are running around 9K.
However the measurements are 8.31*8.37*5.17, so looks like you stone has some hidden weight.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have seen this diamond in person and it is a beauty, a couple of white clouds or feathers... small but noticable. I didn''t notice any yellow, but then again, I didn''t have anything to compare it against. I am still concerned with the deepness of this cut. Do you thing the depth of the cut is extrememly bad? the stone is way deep...even hoping for the best in the crown and pavilion angles, i''m not sure how well you would come out as far as cut grade....6 or 7 maybe.
what can i say though, i''ve never seen it...you are the one that has to love it.

You will find that people here tend to be very numbers oriented since we cannot all see the diamond in person. Generally speaking, the numbers hardly lie (though there are definitely exceptions). That being said, if you are happy with it, that''s all that matters in the end. You don''t need anyone but your own approval to be happy with your purchase.

That being said... I would stay away. Yes, there are some definite concerns with hidden weight and the cut, but my biggest issue is that visible inclusions would bother me to death. That''s just the way I am and you may be different, as many people are. To get a diamond at the size that you''re looking at for the price it''s being offered, you have to make concessions. In this case, cut, clarity and color are all sacrificed for size. Then again, as I mentioned before, that''s just my opinion, and you''re the one who needs to be happy with the purchase.
