my guy keeps telling me I have to pick out a ring, he''s in Iraq at the moment and so I''m trying to do this on my own....I don''t really want him to spend a lot of money, I know it sounds weird, but I''m just not a materialistic kind of chick, so I found this ring and was wondering if anyone could tell me what they thought of it

I like it, think it''s very pretty, to be honest I am not really all that concered about the SI grade...Is doesn''t give any dimentions as far as the cut goes so I am not sure if that really makes a difference here. this is off a website that is actually advertised on this forum...anywho, just wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on this ring

thanks all!

what2do, welcome to PS. the ring you posted is a stock picture. USUALLY, vendors put the best pictures of their work up. This is an example of shoddy work. The first little princess on the right shoulder is sunk! Channels are uneven... just not good craftsmanship.

Yes, this is a photo that certainly is not of the best quality workmanship.

Besides the stones on the side not being set evenly, it also appears that the shank at the bottom has a visiible crack in it.

lol yea, see I have no clue what I''m looking at or even looking for....he showed me a ring from blue nile that was like $8,000 there''s no way I can let him spend that much, not after spending a year in Iraq is how he earned the money...I just dont know what to do....

Oh and thanks for the welcome! and the advice! do you think going to an actual jeweler is a better option then buying off line?

It''s fine to do it online. And it''s fine to do it in person. You just have to know what to buy. You usually get better prices online.

OK, well thanks :-) I guess I will keep looking.....Glad I found this site tho, cause as you already can see I haven''t got a clue about this kind of stuff....thanks again!

what2do, if you like the princess sidestones you might like this Scott Kay ring from Pearlmans. Scott Kay is a highly respected designer and the workmanship of his pieces is wonderful. The setting shows it for a round but it''s possible the head could be changed to accomodate a princess cut if that''s what you''re wanting. The price for the setting is a great deal and Bill Pearlman can help you find a stone for it keeping you in whatever budget you''d choose. there are also several other Pricescope vendors who sell beautiful stones and settings and can work with any budget. Is your guy in the Military?

Item: 045PO1 - A Scott Kay platinum diamond engagement ring. The ring is a size 5 and is set with .36ct of princess cut diamonds in channels. The center is a CZ and the ring needs a 3/4ct center. Great buy!
Price: $1,000.00

I think you should be able to get a 1 ct in that kind of setting for less than 6K.

what2do, I'd suggest calling or emailing Bill Pearlman. he's got a special heart for service men and women. I am working with him right now on a new wedding set and he's very patient and helpful. You can also ask him if it's possible for the ring to be sized at all, although with the channel set princess stones it might be difficult. You don't need to spend 8K to come up with a beautiful ring. I'm sure your guy wants you to be happy and find something you'd love and be proud to wear and it's going to represent his love for you and the commitment he's making.

Hi What2do! Welcome to PS!

It''s so refreshing to hear a gal say she''s not really a "size chick!" even though there are plenty of ladies here who aren''t concerned about size. I myself tend to get caught up in the quest for a larger stone, lol!

Have you thought about a princess solitaire, and having him use the majority of his budget for the center stone (without side stones), then purchasing a wedding band with princess stones at a later date? I''m not so proficient at posting links and pics of rings, but if you look at my avatar you can see (vaguely) that I have an RB solitaire with a wedding band consisting of a double row of princess cut, invisible set diamonds. Before I got engaged, one of the questions my DH asked me was "would you like something with stones on the side, or would you rather have me put all my budget into the center stone?" I had no qualms about telling him that I''d rather have a stone I''d never want to upgrade in size for his budget. (That doesn''t mean I don''t want to upgrade it now, 3.5 years later, lol!) Just food for thought...hope this helps!

Hey what2do : )

Here is a similar setting from Dimend Scaasi - another vendor that is advertised on this forum and highly recommended by several PriceScopers.

The setting in 18K White Gold is $1400, 14K White Gold is $1200, or Platinum is $1800.

http://www.dimendscaasi.com/build/step1.asp?prodID=5AB

I looked quick at some Princess cut stones and saw several there from about $2000-$3000 around 0.75 carats.
I don't know anything about what makes a Princess a good stone, but there's possibilities there...

You sound like you're being very strong with your sweetheart overseas in Iraq -- is he military? I know what that feels like, so I'm sending you a BIG hug : p You deserve it!

Aussiegirl : p

ETA: Sorry - I am SO 10 minutes ago.. You guys type fast!!! Ignore this - you're headed in a new direction : )

Thanks Mrssalvo, maybe I will give my guy the advice to call Bill Pearlman...that sounds like a good idea, there are so many websites and so many choices I just don''t know what I am doing...I do like that ring you posted tho..

Monarch, i hear what your saying but I am really not a solitare type person, for some reason I tend to be drawn to rings that have side stones, but really a solitare does not look bad with a band that has diamonds in it, oh man! the plot thickens! haha....Sheesh for someone who doesn''t want her man to spend all kinds of money on a ring, I sure am picky aren''t I! haha!!! thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it and I''m sure my soldier will as well!

good luck what2do. I know it all becomes overwhelming very quickly. Please don''t hesitate to ask questions and keep us posted on your progress.

aussiegirl, i really like that one too! I will take them all! haha!!! and thanks for the hug, I need them sometimes, that''s for sure. I am saving all of these websites you guys are giving me, it''s helping tremendously....I actually came across this forum by accident. I was looking for a chart that showed actual sizes of what a 1 carat was and really, .75 or even .50 did not look all that small to me...I showed him a ring when he was home on leave and it was .50 and he said it was too small, but looking at the chart I found, I dont think so at all....I wear an aquamarine ring and the middle stone looks the same as the .50 on the chart and to me the stone is a really good size.

Thanks Mrssalvo! you guys make me feel welcome..wow, ever been to a military spouse forum, now there''s a rough place to land haha...

I think I need to just gather a bunch of quarters and head down to the grocery store and keep putting them in the gumball machine until I get that ring they got in there haha, this does become very overwhelming, extremely quickly...
