Is this common?

I recently had a heart shaped diamond reset into this setting and I'm honestly not very happy with it. The ring was reset by my DH's client, who is a jeweler that does decent work. I didn't need anything fancy and I just wanted something simple to wear in replace of my ering when we go on vacations or somedays when I go to school. I have an issue with the difference in the pave styles of the basket and the shank. I'm not sure if it is common to use different types of pave styles on one ring but it looks a bit awkward to me. Secondly, the basket was placed on top of a band that was already made, therefore, it doesn't look like a ring that was well thought out in design. It seemed like they had an existing band and then just created a basket and plopped it onto the band. I had my doubts and confronted the jeweler prior to having the ring made and she said that this is common so I trusted their word. I thought they were going to somehow connect the basket and the band. Am I making a big deal with the design of this ring? Also, if I were to have them fix it, what would be the minimal work to be done to the ring to make it right or will they have to recreate the ring? I would love to hear some feedback. Thanks in advance. :wavey:

I agree that this looks awkward and not well thought out. I'm no expert, but a basket is usually integrated into the shank and not just plunked down on top. I would ask for a remake.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm also thinking about that, but when I discussed this with the jeweler, she said the only option is to redo the shank/band and then put it together...if that makes sense.

Um, yet another example of why you don't use a jeweler just because you know them personally.

The question you really need to be asking isn't "Is this common?" but "Is this good practice?" I suspect it IS common, but would not consider it good practice. If you can just return the setting and go somewhere else, that may be the best way to get the kind of thing you want.

If the jeweler is a very important client, such that his leaving will harm your husband's business, you may need to consider whether this is worth making a fuss about.

Thanks for chiming in. We've worked with him before but the other pieces were much better than this. I don't know what happened this time. The jeweler is not a very important client so it's ok for me to voice my concerns. I may have to consider taking the ring elsewhere but I don't want to waste the money that we spent on the reset. :((

Ummm... What the jeweler described is what should have happened in the first place, so obviously she sees what is wrong. There is an old (or maybe not that old) pricescope proverb that goes something like "if they couldn't get it right the first time (or anywhere near right) what makes you think they will the second or third or...."

That being said, since you have worked with this jeweler in the past and have been satisfied, then maybe give them another shot. The fix here is a total remake, not an easy fix. If you can't agree on a remake with drawings, waxes, CAD, something besides a discussion than I would insist on a refund.

I agree. DH and I will be paying them a visit later this week and see what comes out of the meeting. Thanks again for your advice!
