I asked for a price quote for a custom made engagement band (not including the center stone) from a medium-sized chain in my area, and I was wondering if you could share your expertise & tell me if this is a ripoff or not:

$2100 + tax for a:

* 18k white gold band (75% gold, 15% palladium, 2.5% zinc, 7.5% copper) with a
* Platinum Prong Head
* 2 micrometers of rhodium plating overall
* 6 side accent diamonds (less than 1 ct overall weight, color H or better, clarity VS2 or better)
* Inscription

For that price, how much metal (mass) should I expect, say in a women''s size 5??

Thanks in advance :)

I don''t know the answer to your question, but I can give you some advice, look at settings on different websites and compare complexity and detail work for the one online to your design.

check out these settings from knox jewelers

or go to an online dealer like whiteflash to get a price comparison.

To be honest with you, unless you give a picture or more details, it will be really hard for psers to help you.

Do you have a picture you can post so we can help you??

typically speaking you are going to pay a bit of a premium for custom work over the stuff they generally produce. Depending on the intricacy of the design, it could be a very good price.

I don't think the band is that unique - they have the design already pre-made, but in palladium. I wanted it recreated in white gold & platinum (head)

When I was purchasing my e-ring, I had a custom platinum band and setting made for it. It was not extravagant, just a simple tiffany band with a knife edge for a asscher cut. I purchased the ering from a store in the diamond district in NYC. He said that if someone came to him for a custom platinum band, he would charge about $1600. I don''t know where you are going, but the number seems high. From my understanding, Platinum is the most expensive metal you can get. For an 18K gold band, I would expect the price to be lower. Best of luck.

Wow I think that is high for that. I don''t care for that setting at all. It appears really clunky and not flattering for the diamond at all. I do like the one from whiteflash though. It is slightly different but more feminine and pretty! I would look around more before you have that made!

Cookiemonster- I paid the same ammount for a plat. ring with 22 1pointers going 3/4 around and to have my center stone set... so to me it sounds about right. My ring is custom made and designed, so it wasn''t a pre-fab one either.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I think I''m gonna get it ... the general consensus, as I understand, is that the band is a bit high, but then again it''s custom fabbed with higher specs & I want it made in a short period of time. My girlfriend loves the design ... it''s nicer in person. I like the fact that there is a solid "bar" that will help protect the middle stone from chpping on either side; this will especially help since I''m gonna have a (gorgeous natural/untreated) 1.5ct white sapphire put there.
