Is this a reasonable request?

So I got my ring in the mail, and while it's gorgeous, I have a few concerns. The first one is that the diamond isn't eye clean (it's an SI1), although the vendor's gemologist assured us it would be. Both my husband and I can clearly see a black speck near the center of the diamond, although to be fair, it's not always easily visible (I can only see it when I bring it about 8-10 inches from my eyes and the light is more diffused; i.e. my house).

We're thinking we're probably going to send the ring back and exchange the stone, which brings me to my question. When the ring first arrived, I also noticed that the halo is different on my ring than the web site's picture. The web site says that there are 24 stones on the ring setting: 14 for the halo and 5 on each side of the ring. But my diamond only has 12 diamonds for the halo. I liked the halo on the web site because it looks more circular around the round diamond. The 12 diamonds has a less circular look.

Am I being too nitpicky to ask them to make the halo with 14 diamonds? If we weren't going to return the ring anyway because of the diamond, I probably would have decided to just live with it, but since it's going in anyway, I really do prefer the more circular look. Do you think it's a reasonable request for them to remake that?

Here's a pic I took of my ring before I noticed the black speck and realized we'll probably return it. The speck doesn't show up easily in photographs, although it's easy to pick out in real life.

Here's the setting from the web site:

My first thought was that maybe there was a difference in the size of the center stone, but you can clearly see that there is enough room for the two additional melee to be set. I'm curious why the didn't, and I don't think that your being nit picky. If your going to send the center stone back anyway, I definitely ask about the halo and why it was made the way it way and if it can be changed.

Your ring is gorgeous!! I can't wait to see more photos!

First off I love the design of the ring! it is very nice. What is the website you are going through? As a consumer website I always feel best to post all the information.

Personally I would send it back. Not because there is anything wrong with it, but because if it bothers you already...it will continue to bother you. And if this is your ering (or any other ring with importance) then you should love it 100000%. I will call their customer serivce line and explain the issues. I'm sure they will understand and hopefully rectified the midunderstanding.

Yes, I agree that there is too much space between the stones on the halo. And I also would have to have an eyeclean stone. You might be happier with VS2.

Thanks for your thoughts! We're changing out the main diamond, and I asked them to put 14 diamonds for the halo. The new diamond I picked out is also an SI1, but has a twinning wisp, which hopefully will mean it's eye clean. My main worry is that there will be haziness. Supposedly they're checking for both eye clean and haziness before they mail it out (but they checked the last diamond and somehow missed the black inclusion in the table; my fingers are crossed they look more closely this time). The new diamond falls within the Ideal proportion ranges (and scored well on the HCA), which I'm hoping will mean even more fire. The one we're sending back is a 60/60, but scored well on the HCA and has nice brilliance and fire. The bad part is now I have to wait longer while all these changes take place... I'm so ready to wear my new ring!

I see no reason that a twining wisp would make the stone hazy, so hopefully this one is really eyeclean! This sounds like a good trade, so I hope the ring turns out exactly like you hoped this time! Please come back and show us pictures!

I think you made the right decision. It's so hard to be without your ring but in the end I think you will be much happier. Did they mention why the halo was made with fewer stones? I can't wait to see the changes. Keep busy the time will pass! ;)

I too like the more circular look as well and think it's kind of weird they would randomly change it for your ring. Your ring is beautiful, but hopefully you will be able to get it to be perfect for you. btw I LOVE the octagonal halo look, and the yellow gold. Pretty pretty!

Sarahbear, iirc the vendor is Brilliant Earth.

I too agree that the circular look is nicer. How strange that they would just change that. You did the right thing to request it to be the same as in the photo. Hope the waiting time goes fast for you!

I'm so glad that haziness is unlikely! My fingers are crossed for a beautiful eye clean diamond.

I couldn't figure out how to multiquote, but:

Christina, they didn't give a reason for the halo change. The woman we've been working with said (over the phone) she wasn't sure why that would have happened and they'll change it to match the web site. In her most recent e-mail, though, she said that they would evaluate the setting once it arrived back to them and advise a solution. Hopefully everything goes smoothly with getting the circular halo. My husband has taken over the reins dealing with everything at my request. He's very laid back, and I think he's the better person to negotiate all of this. I was starting to find it stressful, and I realized that I don't want this to be stressful. Getting my new e-ring should be a happy experience.

Distracts and Sarahbear, yes it's Brilliant Earth. I like what the company stands for, but for anyone who decides to buy there, be prepared that I don't think they deal with a lot of Pricescopers wanting GIA reports (sometimes the GIA report is on the site, but a lot of times you have to request it). For anyone who buys there, I recommend getting your list straight the first time, or there might be frustration. I think I became known as the woman who wanted to compare a bunch of diamonds!

ETA: And yes, I'll definitely post lots of pics when the ring is finished. I've loved looking at everyone else's rings and can't wait to share mine!
