Hello All, I have finally found a stone within my budget, I was wondering if I am paying the right price for it? The stones specs are as listed:

Carat: 1.20
Cut: very good
Clarity: SI2
Color: H

The jeweler is asking 4600 for the stone. I have also included the GIA # to reference the stone for the rest of the statistics on the stone - I just want to make sure I am paying what i should be and not overpaying/or could get something better for the same price - thanks all for your help!

GIA: 5106444051

Use the diamond search above or on the home page. Put in your parameters and you''ll be able to do a comparision search and see how much a stone with those specs is going for.

Unable to check on the proportion of the stone. GIA report check seems to have some issue at the moment.

Online price range from 4.1 - 5.6k, depending on the vendor, cut and eye-cleanliness of the stone.

it looks like it fits into the price range to me using the search above.

A cut of very good is not acceptable? I thought the only thing above that is excellent?

There is different VG cut grades, some are better even than Ex grades, depends on the proportions. Also different lab consider different proportions for their top cut grades.

The stone you listed is just bad. It is too deep, making the stone face up smaller than similar weight ideally cut stone. The angles are such that it will look dull as the light entering the stone from the crown will leak out through the pavilion instead of being reflected back to the observer. This stone is cut just to meet the 1.20c carat limit where there is a jump in $/carat.

Use the cut adviser and see where that get you. Play around with it.

To understand what your saying, Would these stones be better?

GIA: 2105597919

If not, what exact specs on the GIA report should I be looking for so I can get a that nice brilliance and sparkle.

Stone 2 will be very promising in terms of light return, it also has the biggest diameter given than all stones weight 1.20c.
Ditto.

Are you buying from a trusted vendor who can confrim that this SI2 is eye clean? Most are not.

The dealer of the second stone is blue nile. They have the diamond listed on their website - I am not sure how to tell if the inclusions would be seen but they do show them on the blue nile website if you look that diamond up.

Hello Stonecold, I just used that calculator to play around putting in the dimensions from the GIA report - and it says the stone is:

Total Visual Performance: 5.7 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

So that is not good?

this is on the 5106444051 reported stone. So I should avoid this stone at all costs?

yes

Yap, no good at all.
Regarding the inclusions, you cannot tell if it is eye-clean or not from the inclusion plot. The only way is to ask the vendor if it is eye-clean or see it yourself.

Not even close. The general rule is to eliminate diamonds that score above 2. Those scoring under 2 are generally worthy of further evaluation.

Honestly, thank you all for all of your help, I will continue searching until I find what I am looking for! I will try to keep this post updated further as I find more diamonds as you guys know your stuff and your opinion helps me greatly.

I was searching around jewelers inventory and came upon this diamond GIA report:
2105969509

That would be a great diamond to get then as long as the inclusions are not visible to the human eye - is that correct? I am trying to setup some time to see this diamond.

Hi all, something I just that everyone mentioned is that SI2 clean diamonds are rare. The original diamond that is not a good proportion was a clean SI2 (from what I could see to the human eye and under the 10x magnification) (GIA: 5106444051). Should I get it because of that or still a no because the Cut is really bad? Thanks all again!

I would say definitely do not get the first stone. You can get a much more beautiful stone.

For me (and almost everyone on this site) cut is the most important factor. I would much rather have a smaller, really well cut stone. It will look bigger, better, and much more sparkly.

Does your GF want a stone that''s at least 1.2 ct?

It doesn''t matter if SI2 diamonds are rare. They are not rare b/c they are desirable. Just set your budget and find the best cut diamond with the highest combo of cut and clarity. For me, I''d be looking for G-H-I, VS2, SI1, eyeclean SI2 in ideal cut diamonds on WF, BGD, GOG, High Performance Diamonds and I might look through the WF expert selection if I really wanted to take the time to run all the numbers and size was a very important factor.

For me, it will still be a no. I would go maybe a smaller stone with a better clarity. For example, the stone you first listed has only the diameter of a well cut 1.1c.

Ditto.

Good cut is definitely more valuable. A given set of inclusions in an SI2 will be better hidden in a well-cut stone than in a poorly cut stone, esp. since you''re considering super sparkly RBs - those twinkles and flashes can mask a lot.

A jeweler has gotten this stone in:

GIA: 2111397072

It gets a 2.5 on the HCA calculator. He wants 4900 for the stone, is this something worth the money? thanks again!
